Help with Premium search - listing progression legit itemsFollow

#1 Aug 24 2013 at 5:42 AM Rating: Good
Hi

Im trying to take a progression approach to the game on Test server, starting back in classic. I have premium zam account so I can do all the advanced search filters. Im trying to find/list only the items that would be acceptable for each stage of progression, starting with classic.

So I exclude every expansion but it still brings up inappropriate items for my purposes, and even if I try to narrow it down itll sometimes include items from the expansions I selected to be exlcuded (annoying!). For armor, it doesnt seem to list store bought generic armors such as the plate pieces you can buy from npc vendors - I want to be able to see these to compare it with crafted or looted.

the search just seems very finnicky and its not straight forward as to how to achieve the results Im after. Im hoping someone else out there with an interest in progression can help me use the search filters so that it lists only the items that can be considered acceptable for progression.

As an example, I would like to find all the plate armors that dont have a level requirement, are not associated with any expansion (except perhaps Kunark), whether crafted, store bought or looted. Or if they do have a level req, they can only be stuff that was available (or the renamed equivalent) of stuff in classic.

Thanks

Due to the many global changes and additions, such as defiant. There's no real way to limit it to specifically any expansion, especially the original, classic game. There are also lots of GM gifts, and other unknown items, that you can only assume from the discovery date that were introduced prior to that, but exactly when.

I may someday work out a list by expansion of various gear, but I think it's doubtful, due to the amount of work required, and just the AAs keep me pretty busy, and I got other things I'd like better to work on. Like maps!

Most bought armor is worse than dropped of armor of the same type. I.e. buying a cloth shirt is 4ac and the same as if found as loot. Bronze Breastplate is the same vendor or looted.

Just my thoughts. Although, if started working on it, and kept people updated here, I'm sure there would be others who would like to help out. I see this request fairly often.

EDIT: There used to be a really good list of top of the expansion plate armor sets, but I can't find the original anywhere. This page magelo, likes pretty close but updated to some newer expansions: http://eq.magelo.com/armor_sets.jspa?classe=1

Okay thanks for that information.

If I manage to find some good search filters I will share them. :)

UPDATE: Here are some filter settings I used, which provide an example of the confused results that mix up items from different eras and revamped zones.

Leave the filters as default/reset and then change these...

Slot: Chest
Type: Armor
Sort items by: Armor Class x1

Exclude Expansion: All of them

Attunable Items: Exclude
NO TRADE Items: Exclude

Thats all.

Check the results and you will see it is a great place to start - it includes a lot of progression appropriate gear. but it also includes some gear that is a bit out of place, and it can be confusing. Unless you are already very knowledgable about the classic era (including early expansions) of the game, it takes a bit of homework to figure it all out. Im not part of a progression guild because there are no family friendly ones on Test or Tunare afaik so apart from general chat and other conversation with random people who know about it Im pretty much on my own.

Yther Ore, I think its possible but would require some folks going through methodically labelling items as Progression appropriate (or what has been available at stages of Progression server) somehow, and what expansion it applied to. A lot of work but maybe little by little it could be done if there was an agreed upon way to work it in so community effort can take over.

There's no wiki for the items here, or we could use that (after having a developer add it to an item template or making one). I might suggest in the feedback forum and see what happens. The global search works well for wiki stuff, if they add the ability to wiki items.

EDIT: Another thing is you might search for old tradeskill pages. And another good armor sets link: http://www.darkstorm.co.uk/eq/eq-warrior-armour.php

Update on filter settings:

Change NO TRADE to include, instead of exclude.

And change Sort items by to None (from the drop down menu) for all (Primary, Secondary and Tertiary all set to None).

This provides much better result, with nothing omitted apparently, even if the sorting isnt very clean - turning on Sort items by Armor Class seems to limit the amount of results and only list items that meet a minimum score. So best just to disable 'sort items by' altogether.

It can be rather difficult to organize equipment/spells if you are trying to play 'old school' style.

This site is commonly used for 'the best armor' for progression servers http://www.paullynch.org/eqblog/?p=529 Its all 'old school' for each class. Some are crafted, some are quested, some are drops.

For spells........in the order that spells came out for each expansion........... http://eq-manager.com/combine is great!! I still use it today

Hope these help you out

Well, different kinds of efforts have been made in the past such as Focus Effects available in the classic world .

Focus effects weren't a launch feature of EQ, but it was deemed too much work to unfocus all the items for progression.

You might get some better answers if you said something like: "I'm playing a shaman old school progression style (example are you using PoK to travel or no?). It'll be slow. I am a troll. What should my level 25 (or 50 or whatever) gear goal be if I am sticking to classic?"

Once you move into Kunark... most of classic isn't worth chasing, ditto for every expac that follows.

Maybe the better way of asking the question is to say (example): I am a well-geared non-raider ____insert class___, ___race___ of level ___ at the end of ___insert xpac___ ... what should my gear look like?

I haven't looked at magelo in years... are you able to search those based on last updated? If so you could just use date filtering to see character profiles from right before an expac dropped.

edit: "better answers" as in "more specific to your exact situation"

I would make sure to use the
Exclude Expansion: list and you can make sure to choose more then one.
Storebought items; default is off. you have to manually turn it on.

you might have to restrick your seach to one Zone at a time.

you might turn off the
Attunable Items if your going clasic progress since I dont think Attunable were put in game untill much later.

Attunable was muuuch later. I won't guess wrong... but it wasn't a part of the mix during my max playtime of LDoN era.

Another thing to do is go to the progression server threads on the official boards... by searching the rant threads about "out of era" gear you would get a decent sense of what you shouldn't be chasing. Possibly also the patch notes from this round of progression as they fixed & unlocked things that were off-kilter to era.

It really depends how much legwork you want to do and what is fun for you. If you are just playing an alt through old content by expansion it would probably be way faster to just look up drops as you get them. If you want to "complete" each expansion with the best gear you can... you have a lot of research/planning/grinding to do. If you are that dedicated... this could make a great wiki topic (if broken down into chapters by expac?)

good luck!
