Returning, looking for some class selection adviceFollow

#1 Jul 03 2012 at 3:48 AM Rating: Decent
So heres where im at, im sort of stuck between a wizard, zerker, ranger or a mage.

Taking things one step at a time, i simply want to have an awesome character that i can take as long as i need to work on. I want to enjoy the world of EQ in terms of adventuring up to level up, working AAs etc...

Down the road, im not sure if my heavy guild days/raiding is over...its not something i wouldnt do, but before i really focus on a character thats big on raiding or anything, i simply want to have a character that is great for soloing and can do a lot of things in the games current setup.

Just lookin for pros and cons of each class above if possible.

Grouping though, i will def be on board with if the oppurtunity arises. Also, i know some will say to play the class that seems fun to me, but i need more than that...they all seem fun, hence, why i need some more info on what to expact and what makes life fun with these classes etc...

Thanks in advance.

Roll 'em all! Seriously. It's the best way to get refamiliarized with the game and these classes. Levelling is so easy these days you could level all 4 classes to 51 (where you can start on AA's) very quickly.

Why those 4? As a guess, I'd say you're into fast, heavy DPS. That's fine. For that purpose, they're all good. I play them all and my favorite is the wizard because of the added utility of ports, TL to Bind, evac, etc. Instant-nukes and irresistible Lure nukes are fun, too. But you'd find enjoyment in playing any of the 4.

Ha yea, i enjoy dps classes. Been MMOing since the ultima days and was here day 1 with EQ, but got sidetracked by way to many other MMOs.

I am sure that eventually ill spread my wings and try some other classes again that arent dps, but to get my feet planted again i figured ill go with what i know ill like.

See Ranger was a class i originally played in the original EQ days, but they sucked back then, i only got to lvl 40 when the cap was 50 with him. So i sort of feel inclined to play a ranger.

Zerkers just sound fun too

And then with wiz and mage, im torn...but im not really into pets, know what i mean? I see you have a mage as well...how does he play for you?

Btw i picked FV for my server as well ha, seems like from what ive read its a good server.

Well if you want my advice I can tell you of those classes I was not real thrilled with the berserker. Granted my Berserker is lvl 52 (Dragon killer basically). The only reason I choose Berserker is they can get a pretty OP weapon at 52 (epic 1.0 is pretty good at that lvl). Maybe combat abilities make them more fun at higher lvl.

I have a 76 Mage and love it. I am spoiled on gate, although origin being usable so quickly makes up for that as melee now I suppose. But the AA's are fun with a mage and pet is very powerful. They are good to group with but can also solo, molo well. Ranger is also a neat class I think I got mine up to 57. Being able to snare can be very helpful leveling up and having the best track in the game is useful.

My exp with Wizards isn't very high. I don'y like having to sololy depend on spells for 100% of my damage. There are alot of highly resistant mobs in the game and it just annoys the crap out of me seeing multiple "So and So resisted your whatever spell" messages. At least with mage I have a decent chunk of dps out of my pet. Again this is just me Wizards obviously get the best nukes in the game and you get the porting abilities which come in handy.

Mage's total dps is close to wizard but the class requires more "handling." Wiz is almost point-and-shoot. Mages have tons of utility spells, of course, and there is probably no better spell in terms of usefulness than Call of the Hero, assuming you don't exclusively solo.

Both are super classes. When I set up my group originally I planned to have 2 wizards for max dps but I have no regrets going with a mage. He's saved my warrior's butt many a time on a bad pull as my warrior runs frantically across the zone with 12 mobs on him and I scramble to CoH him out of danger!

If your not into pets don't play the mage, since wizard does much of the other aspects of a mage with more damage...

Rangers have sweet spots for grinding aa (search some ranger forums) thanks to headshot. Vinelash is game-changing for rangers as well. With mercs, you can do an awful lot with a ranger now.

Berserker I personally can't get into levelling very high, but some people really love the class.

If I had to choose from your 4 (funny because none of my mains or mainly-played alts are those classes) I would probably go wizard, but I have a history with casters in most games.

Welcome back, and have fun with whatever you do :)

I love all four of those classes.

Wizard is my favorite (I have 9 of them, ranging in level from 65 to 90) but that's due to the 'boom!' factor. Plus, I never run out of concepts with The Simbul (or Mistress Jenna) as examples/inspiration.

Mage is a great class that I despised for quite some time (it was the class someone I hated played so...) but now see just how great they can be. I first discovered that while leveling one of my wizards during the late Luclin/early PoP period. I used to duo with a Mage and she was ridiculously good. Kept my squishy inky *** out of the fire on multiple occasions. The two classes complement each other extremely well. She had the pet I wish I had and I had the nukes and utility she wished she had.

I only have three berserkers (40, 85, 90), the latter of which was speed leveled. (Not powerleveled, speed leveled. The difference is, having the best buffs available to you on demand but not having the high level character be directly involved in the killing of mobs. Six people, six characters in the group, with what is essentially a portable Guild Lobby parked nearby and logged in every hour or so). I will admit, I prefer rogue for the 1-75 run but after that, OMG!

Ranger is an obvious choice, though the going can be kinda rough pre-70 or so. It's very much a Swiss Army Knife kind of class so if versatility is important to you, cross the zerker off your list and move on with the three remaining.

Why not Rogue? With their easily-stocked poisons, they do massive damage quickly. They're fairly durable, and with SoS can go basically anywhere they want, and set up the perfect attack with impunity. They have splitting ability with Escape, and can even drop a meztrap if they're in trouble. Toss in Assassinate for farming swarms of weaker mobs, and the ability to pick locks and disarm traps to get into places that normally require some extra work and they gain quite a bit there.

Finally, their ability to make Spider's Bite and Scorpion's Agony poisons is a virtually guaranteed money-maker that will never have the bottom fall out of the market for it.
