Fansy is a good example of the difference between SoE and me.

I would have hired him as a dev. Fansy out-thought a lot of people to create that trail of chaos.

I certainly would have done a hardcore heritage event around the old oasis zone as an instanced mission where you have to kill Fansy before he train-kills you.

The Denny's post I have seen before. Probably should be edited to reveal the source...

You would have hired a guy with 0 programming skills and experience as a dev? That would work out well for you.

All fansy really did was take advantage of the level limitation for PVP. There was nothing special to it at all. Cant attack someone under level 6 so he stayed level 5 and used selos to train others. The later exploits of fansy with the PoD was a well known exploit he just heard about and used to wreak carnage on the PVP server.

It was pretty funny but theres nothing special about what he did at all, certainly nothing to qualify him for any job.

Actually, Fansy is a good example of how the times have changed. Nowadays, he would be hired as a dev. The precedent in EQ was set with John Capozzi (aka Kendrick) who was a particularly hardcore player in beta (and probably the best rogue in EQ at the time) who was hired by 989/Verant shortly thereafter and became quite the designer (if you remember the original/working Ring of Fire in Acrylia, the first Chardok revamp (adding random loot drops, etc), and the Velketor's Labyrinth revamp, and if you were a rogue (thanks John for evade), then you know John Capozzi's work). Nowadays, many (if not 'most') MMO developers actively hire from their community. But that wasn't common 10+ years ago.

Examples include:

- Lum the Mad (Scott Jennings, who has worked for several MMO developers including Mythic and now NCSoft)
- Tweety (Sanya Weathers, who was most famous in EQ for her rant blog and became DAoC's Community Manager before becoming EA Mythic's director of community sadly around the time of Warhammer's development & release)
- Borticus (Jeremy Randall, formerly the co-host of one of the longest running podcasts for Star Trek Online (STOked). They hired him on the spot when he and Chris went to Cryptic's offices to do a live show)

Happens all the time nowadays. But back then, it was still very much developer vs player(s). Heck, my development job (granted, for a small indy developer specializing in text based sports management sims) came exactly the same way.

We've had some characters in EQ too. I mean, everyone remembers Furor and Thott and Tigole but remember The Quon? Or Sam Deathwalker (24 b0xxor r0xxor)?

The one thing you fail to realize is that all those you listed had experience in the fields they where hired into and they actually contributed something. Fansy being able to train hill giants is nothing even remotely like what those guys brought to the table. I see what you're saying to an extent but its like saying that because Apple hired the iphone hacker comex it would make sense to hire some random guy because he is really good at making crank calls from his iphone.

Fansy was funny but he offered nothing of value to the community or game so why would you hire him on? On top of that its not like what he did took skill or cunning. Hell it was common practice back then on SZ for people to get mad because they got ganked and make a lowbie to train the gankers all fansy did is make a full time gig of it and go for attention.

Had he done something special or unique and got around the games design to do it that would be something but training hill giants and using the VERY well known bug to use the PoD to kill was nothing special.

IF Fansy had been on a regular server he'd be scum.

He was on the "no rules" pvp server and caused several changes to the game. Not because he was the only one messing with PoD... because he did it publicly with style. He knew how to hype himself sure, and he was creative.

Harnessed for good he might have offered up some interesting things... certainly concept-wise for PVP alone he could have potentially made that ruleset more appealling long term. Or maybe he was just a self-absorbed prankster that never could have contributed to a team... shrugs.

I might agree with you if he actually... you know... PVPd. Why would you think someone whose whole thing was staying under level cap to avoid PVP would have interesting concepts for PVP?!?

I think hes been placed on a pedestal that he dont deserve. Frankly as funny as it is he basically just trolled the whole server. If this where WoW he would have just been another in a long list just like him.

Uh, no they didn't. Where on Jeremy's resume does 'systems designer' show up? Why did Heretic have to teach him EVERYTHING when he was hired on?

You might be under the mistaken assumption that game designers have to know programming or code. They most certainly do not. It helps, but it's not a requirement. Most development houses have their own custom tools inhouse so even your experience with one developer isn't going to give you a leg up when you move to another. People with passion for your project (which you can't teach) and an ability to give you a different perspective on the mechanics you're designing (again, can't teach that) have value as members of a dev team. Heck, EQLive has (or had) a handful of devs who were useless in that they didn't really like the game and so they couldn't come up with anything particularly good for it. But they could warm a seat and do what they were told so they remained employed. Tell me, which would you rather have creating stuff for a game you like? I'm not saying Fansy would've been an awesome dev or anything. But he blew the doors off what was at the time a pretty gaping hole in the game mechanics. As you alluded to, you hire hackers to firm up your security and likewise, you hire exploiters to find/close exploits. He wouldn't be the worst dev ever, that's for sure.

First off, he didnt say game designer he said DEV and to be a game dev you have to know code, period... Designer != Developer

Second, Even as a game designer i would think you would look for more than some troll who trains people for fun. Im failing to see how you guys are connecting the two. i would like to see how this conversation would go down. SOE guy A: "We have a player who has never made it past level 5 and seen no content at all and for fun trains people and kills them" SOE guy B: "Hire him on as a designer im sure he has some great ideas!"

Third, System designer is not a profession its a job title. Its a fancy title for someone that comes up with ideas for things. Of course he would have to be taught how to work with what they have etc. a 20 year game designer would have to be taught the same. As someone who has worked in the MMO field as long as he has hes more than qualified for the job and has a better understanding of MMO mechanics than 95% of MMO players ever will...

This is simple nostalgia and its rose colored glasses taking over. He didnt do anything special. He trolled a ton of people caused a ton of trouble and in the end got a few laughs for it. Your comparison between hiring hackers and hiring him makes no sense whatsoever. If he had been the one to find the exploit it might make some sense but it was well known long before that, SOE just did nothing about it because it was seemingly harmless. Yes security firms hire hackers and for good reason, they dont hire pranksters that leave flaming poo on their steps.

Nothing but nostalgia taking over and putting a clown on a pedestal.

Now venthos on the other hand a case could be made for. He found quite a few exploits and used them to both give him and his guild an advantage and to terrorize people. He found a way to change the color of peoples gear, found exploits to get through walls, exploits to take raid bosses without them being able to hit anyone etc. thats the kind of guy you hire, not one that just uses exploits everyone knows about.

Getting too technical LOL

Fansy the Famous Bard was memorable because of how he wrote up and commented on what he did. I don't know about calling him scum! He wasn't "just" a griefer. Remember his motivating philosophy was to drive evils out of XP zones so goods could expand from the few bastions left to them. Like most PvP servers, Sullon Zek was heavily dominated by evils at the time, I seem to remember that over 75% of XP zones were in their "evil hands."

What made his exploits all the more memorable is that he didn't grief anyone in the sense that he broke rules. What he did was entirely within the rather "generous" ruleset of SZ. The fact that a level 5 toon could do things which forces Verant actually to change the ruleset was also a memorable achievement in my mind.

Do a Google search on Fansy, I believe his original posts, complete with screenshots, are still somewhere on the web. You can't possibly read some of that dialogue and not LOL.

I was really hoping that this forum had grown up past the "He has a different opinion than me rate him down!" mentality but clearly it has not. And you guys wonder why even though the community is thriving these forums are still dead as hell... Everyone who ever had an interest here was ran off by the closed clicky community this used to be. Its better but this throwing around karma over a disagreement is part of the overall problem.

You guys are ignorantly putting a troll on a pedestal and jumping on someone who disagrees. Guys like fansy are a dime a dozen in WoW.

He was just a griefer, nothing more. Talk to people that actually played when he did, good guys went down in his path just about as often as evil. He didnt care, as long as he got a reaction from it people died. Just because he made some clever stories and a site to go with his exploits it dont change that he was just a troll in fact it confirms it. Go look at the crap he pulled with the PoD bug, it was ALL in rivervale... This whole claim that he was doing it for good like some robin hood was just a story, nothing more. He killed both sides all the same.

You raise some interesting points here. I haven't rated you down at all and here and I'm obviously on the record of having some fondness towards Fansy (or at least his/her storytelling).

I do think Fansy the FAMOUS bard has the winning argument of "It was supposed to be no rules pvp". They hard-coded the teams and the rest was supposed to be sort it our yourselves.

The fix for Sullon Zek should have been "you aggro a mob under level 6 you are now Player Killable". Risk while in combat... safe to newbie travel (as long as you avoid aggro). That's all ancient history now though.

Amazing to me that anyone would complain about griefing years ago on the SULLON ZEK server. If you played there you pretty much expected (or should have expected) that griefing was gonna happen, the Sony GMs would stay out of it, explaining that on this particular server players were supposed to use their own resources to deal with conflict.

Oh how my illusions have been shattered by some posters in this thread! Fansy the Famous Bard has gone from being a ribald and clever Robin Hood to a combination of Blackbeard, Atilla the Hun and Ghenghis Khan all rolled into one!

I just gonna wonder if certain people had found their corpses on the underside of some sand giant boots many years ago and haven't forgotten the discomfort and embarassment. LOL
