Advice on Nec or Wiz.Follow

Greetings!
Returning player here, wanting to start a new toon. This time I will be playing from my sofa using a ps3-controller so boxing is out of the question for sure.

I feel that a wiz is very suitable for playing with a controller and also a good solo’er (so I heard). But getting my wiz to lvl 35 using a tank merc got me thinking that maybe a wiz will become somewhat monotonous with the only solo option being kiting in outdoor zones, not being able to camp nameds etc? But on the other hand I guess wiz are more welcome in groups then nec’s?

I feel that a Nec would open up a few more solo options, hiding in dungeons, pet-tanking, kiting but could be a little to lonely…

I am so very torn apart on what to choose so any advice would be welcome 

I'm confused. How do you play EQ with a PS3 controller?

By using motioninjoy.com for drivers and Xpadder to configure the buttons (left stick as wsad and right stick as mouse), then mapping the buttons to keys. Just like any gamepad acually - I just prefer ps3 :)

This make it possible for me to play on the laptop laying in on the couch wich is much nicer for my poor backside. Of course I'm a bit slower then playing with k-board so I wouldn't want to play chanter or healer but a wiz or nec is fine :)

Interesting way of playing (via controller).

Necros can be useful in groups, but you'll want to be in a guild with players that appreciate having you (the player) around for many to recognize what you bring. Wizards are more hyped as belonging in groups though... so if you are trying to pick-up-group.

Utility wise necros have lots of personal utility (feign death alone).

Wiz is great if travel bothers you.

Wiz + tank merc killing the right stuff will level very fast to 70s.

Necro that aggro kites and kills the right stuff will never have an issue getting xp. Necros get stalled on progressiony things that require more than themselves to do (if they are running solo/molo all the time). So it depends what content you aspire to.

Playstyle wise... not sure that many wizards bother kiting. Certainly at lower levels I see mostly "let the merc kill it down a fair bit then drop bombs on it". Necro-wise you best like kiting (tap tanking can be fun, but then you are doing easier mobs).

There's some good threads that go on an on about stuff like this on necrotalk (look it up). I'm sure there's a wizard site that gives the pro-wiz perspective too.

I box a Necro over a wizzy the utility they bring is pretty good and reluctant benevolence is freaking OP for a caster box group.

All depends on what you want to do.

With mercs anyone can solo. Go through the aas and spell lists of both and see which one sounds more fun.

I've been working on my necro since returning a month or so ago. Sitting at 82 right now and still finding groups easily as well as solo content. One nice thing about a necro. You don't need a merc at all. I keep a cleric suspended, but only for buffs.

For boxing I went with a necro over a wizard. While boxing its easy to sick the pet on something and cast a couple dots and snare and not worry about it anymore.

Thanks for the replies!

I got the clever idea to roll a nec as well and try it out (Einstein ehh)Smiley: laugh But hard to get a feeling for the two classes, the mercs is doing most of the job. But I'll keep leveling the nec to the same lvl and make a choise there. Thank god I know what class to play, there is one one I never tried before - froggy!

This is what i have been thinking as well. Since I have limited playtime maybe there will always be something for me to do with a nec I guess.

Who wouldn't!! :) But in the long run?

All in all I might just have the quote "grass is greener on the other side" endquote syndrome :)

Necro is my main has been for the last 6ish years in game.

I didn't upgrade to have mercs until VoA came out (that's what... 3 years late?) because I didn't need them.

Yes my alts love mercs.

Yes having a pocket cleric for my necro for buffs, harder fights and grouping with others is nice.

I still do true soloing though. It remains the best xp for kills/effort for all I have seen. So in this discussion, I would say you don't need to run a merc (and let it leech xp) on a necro. If where you're killing (or the way you like playing) means runnning a warrior merc is better then go for it (of course).
