Ok, so playing a Paladin for the first time ever ( started in 99 Smiley: eek ) Been boxing him with a Froglok Wiz and a healer merc, and we are cruisin through LDON's right now. My question is, what exactly does a Pali do? My DPS is not really that great, I am an ok tank but aggro management is tough ( I have played mostly warriors ) and our spells are kinda weak. I see alot of Pali's so they must be cool....what am I missing that makes them special?

( P.S ) He is only 30 right now, so maybe I just need him to grow a bit. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Some thoughts, semi-connected:

Best Ldon tank on my original server back when Ldon was new in the 30-55 range was a paladin. He held aggro by chaining his stuns, rotating his little heals on himself and controlled-pulling everything. He made the class look godly. He was also gifted at forming groups (so the player behind the character was a major factor).

Other paladins have told me horror-stories of being under geared or AAed around 70 and feeling completely useless or incapable of the content.

Paladins in concept/roleplay have a ton of appeal, but I believe rogues are the only class as low in pop on most servers as paladin (granted other classes have a lot of buff-bot or auto-follow boxes which neither of rogue or pally lends itself to).

Fans of the class will rave about what AAs let you do as a tank and vs. undead for dps.

My pally excels at stuns, knockback and undead. Controlled pulls...lol, not so much. Great dps...not so much, unless it is undead.

Thanks guys, I realize I haven't really begun to explore the class...The stuns and knock backs will make me a better aggro control.Smiley: wink

Let you know how it goes...Smiley: grin

Yeah, it's pretty much a bad idea overall to judge a class based on how it plays at level 30. You don't have anything near a full toolset at that level. My two Paladins (87 and 71) do very well in level appropriate content. They're a bit underdeveloped (71/316 and 87/1154) but that's only because I often succumb to the old level > AA credo from eons ago.

For the most part, Paladins aren't as obviously powerful in groups as Shadowknights but a skilled Paladin will make your jaw hit the floor. Between swing aggro, stun aggro, and heal aggro, they can be the real deal. The problem is, the Paladin requires more patience as you learn the subtleties of the class. The SK is pretty much plug & play, for the most part. My SK is my main and I had a lot more trouble picking up the Paladin than the SK (and I'm told that's pretty common, which is why you see SO many SKs and relatively few Paladins in comparison).

Stick it out. You'll see the class start to really shine in the 50s and 60s. But only if you pay attention to what no one else is paying attention to.

Rem, you are so right. You would figure after playing for so long that I would earn to be a bit more patient...Smiley: banghead (I ended up loving the chanter class once I really took the time to get to know it) I will use the fact that I have been gone for 2 years as an excuse...Smiley: dubious

I thank you for your tips...I really like the idea of my Erudite Paladin...The Deepwater Knights just sounds cool. Definitely gonna continue working on him...Smiley: clap

At high levels, a Paladin is actually the best group tank, due to stun mitigation (you lock even con and lower mobs down 8 out of 12 seconds). Add in heals, massive agro generation (less than SK's, but still impressive) and buffs (most of what a cleric can do) and they're actually overpowered.

Hmmm, not sure how to add my magelo sig here, so I'll just provide a link.

You can pacify pull at lower levels, up to the 50s iirc. Keep at least 3 stuns loaded and dont forget to use root to help you back away from multi pulls.

I loved my pally but no one loved him. Smiley: lol

Seriously though it doesn't really matter as long as you can keep agro, the rest of the group will kill the mob off. That's what I think.

Be warned. A lot of people have an aversion to pallies and only want warriors or uber geared anything else for tanks. It's a shame but over the years people want very high dps groups limited to only a few classes.

As my pally got into his mid 70's his root became underpowered. By that I mean that mobs seems to break free within a couple seconds more often than not.

His favorite crowd splitting situation was to root one, while the other followed you back to the group. In a three mob situation, root one, pull two... then root second and back away from it while killing third, inevitably the roots break, so re-root and stun in liberal doses.

Often a root-knockback served the purpose of controlling the add until it could be dealt with.
