I recommend http://www.mapfiend.net/ for maps, download the full pack.

Also as a general rule your Air pet will tank better than any of your other pets. As for cash, you just have to loot all the items and sell them to vendors. Keep any defiant silk drops you get, that's pretty much the best armor for any level until you get to 80. You can try the various hot zones if you like of follow the Hero's Journey quest line.

I don't play a mage, so I will let someone else answer that one.

The general consensus for leveling/gear is to start with the tutorial to get used to the game and at level 10-11 (when you exit the tutorial) you should stick with TSS zones (TSS = The Serpent's Spine). Those are the zones that are connected to and revolve around the city of Crescent Reach, which is now a home city for all starting characters.

You said you have a 29 mage, so you might want to start a new mage to go through the tutorial with to get refamiliarized with the game and its mechanics, and then when you're ready you can jump back on your 29 mage and find your way to Crescent Reach (very easy thru Plane of Knowledge) and pick up some level appropriate quests.

For maps, you need to download the finished versions and place them in your ...\Sony\Everquest\maps directory.

You can download them from EQ Mapfiend which has been around a long time. Just click on "Download Maps" under the Everquest heading on the left, choose "ALL Maps" and press the "download map pack" button. It will probably be a zipped file, so make sure you have something to unzip the downloaded file with. Make sure they are all unzipped into the \maps directory, and be sure to select "replace current file" when it wants to overwrite existing map files.

Welcome back, check out a few of the other "returning player" threads for some ideas and have fun.

Command list: http://www.onlinegamecommands.com/everquest/everquestcommands.htm

Basically, you use a slash (/) command to specify what channel to talk in then the text afterwards:
/g for group
/gu for guild
/rs for raid (Most people are not suppose to use raid channel in formal raiding parties, and generally have a separate channel for questions and generic raid talk, and /raidsay (or /rs) is reserved for raid leaders to announce directions and loot and the like).
/shout for shouting (not recommended)
/ooc for out-of-character (most common zone-wide channel)
/say for say (everyone in a short radius hears; Also the channel you use to converse with NPCs)
/em for emotes, like /em is tired. comes out as Yther is tired.
/# for specific other /join channels. Note: F2P only have access to one channel and it's automatically joined. You can see the numbers for channel by using the command /list. If your silver or higher you can join other channels with /join channel_name. The most common channel is general.

Most people have /say as the default channel. You can change the default channel by right-clicking on the chat window (need context menus turned on in Options (alt+O)). You don't need to specify a channel to speak in the default channel.

Yther Ore.
