The Penniless Challenge

Build a team of completely F2P characters and see how far you get.

I will try 4 Wizards and a tank and healer merc.

It's funny, but my first thought was a group of different people getting together like the old days!

I still think it's a great idea either way you do it.

If it's anything like EQ2's F2P its playable until max lvl, but once you get to that group content you will die horrible horrible deaths without buying unlockers or gold. The equipment you can use is total crap.

Besides the initial cost to unlock a Magician and Bard, I have started my penniless boxed crew.

4 Mages, 1 Bard 1 Healer merc.

We hit level 50 and I logged for the day. We are using gear that we find along the way as a Mage's output is nothing but a Malachite at these levels.

4 Mage pets is "lol" as current internet jargon goes.

Anyone else messing around with completely free characters?

I started a free 3rd account, thinking with Vulak being LDoN now, I could 3 box ldons, but Vulak and fippy are restricted for f2p accounts Smiley: frown. So I ended making a Gnm Clr on Xegony, since neither account has a Clr. Not really sure why though, as it won't ever get high enough to do anything for the other two accounts really, if I keep it free.

It would be cool to get it upto the 90s though to be simply a buff box. I've been thinking about PLing up Octavia's Enchanter and Shaman also. An Enc on the free account would probably be nice too, since Octavia does mostly casters, and hates the Enc (really my toon but from when we shared an account) being on hers. Strange thing is, I got side-tracked doing the CR quests to get some of easy items, and to get the rewards for the Hero's achievements there. Exp bonus took me to Level 3 just doing a few quests and Linguist's Journal turn-in for Charm of Lore.

The chat limitation really bites for the free accounts though, and if I didn't have gold accounts, I wouldn't even play because of that. I couldn't stand that restriction in EQ2 f2p either. MMO games are about being social. Action-wise, I could easily play older 1st person shooter games to get basically the same feel without talking to anyone. I don't know how many times I went through Doom. Quake not as much, but still alot. Return to Castle Wolfenstein I only did a few times, so I could definitely spend several months just playing that again.

Enough ranting about the limitations.

Keep us updated on your f2p progress Reyla. It's very interesting!

I can see I need to focus.

I know of several people who did 1-60ish last weekend with free or silver accounts and all I did was, well, research. Smiley: oyvey I've been farming up gear for the multitude of new characters I rolled instead of actually leveling said characters. Right now, I'm in Gloomingdeep leveling a warrior (my very first Barbarian warrior. 13 years and 8 warriors and I'm just NOW getting to play a large race one) and I'm sorely tempted to go gold with the account. There seems to be a serious difference in mercs between App5 and Jman1 (as I was told in the other thread).

Anyhow, I quit trying to do the tutorial at any times except in the middle of the night (2-5am EST) since there's usually SO many people in there. I can't PL the characters either since, no matter where I go in the hotzones, someone always finds me and the sight of an 80 druid or 85 shaman or 82 cleric or 76 enchanter, brings the whole damn zone to me looking for buffs. I even disguised the chanter as a mage....and got asked for 'pet toys'.

I'll see how far I can get the warrior before I leave for Vegas tomorrow.

I have seen these challenges in many f2p games but this is the first time I have seen a penniless challenge that started by spending cash. So in the spirit of this thread I will take up the challenge as well with a gold account an j mercs.. :p

Ran into a game breaker.

Tier 5 Apprentice mercs can't do anything.

Having always used Journeyman mercs I never realized this. An apprentice tank and healer at higher levels will die on anything blue con. Everytime. Going to have to use a free Cleric if I want to continue.

I like app mercs because im cheap and don't want to pay the plat to hire better. Also a problem I ran into with J1 is they are more likely to run since they are back down to low confidence. That app5 merc might be weak but they have the heart of a tiger!
