Returning Player, How're SKs in soloing/groupingFollow

I've finally decided to come back to the game after a 5 year break, and I plan on starting fresh, and seeing as I remember SK being pretty fun, I decided to start a new SK, but seeing as I have no plans of raiding in the near future, and don't have a solid play schedule, I was wondering how they were nowadays when it came to soloing/grouping...odd question I guess, but there is always the possibility that non-warriors could have been nerfed to heck heh

Welcome back Smiley: smile I returned to EQ last summer after approximately 3+ years away. One of the biggest additions to the game that, imo, makes it possible for every class to be able to solo decently are the mercenaries (mercs). There are tank, dps (rogue or wizard), and healer mercs. My play style has always been primarily solo and, as a druid, I could do so fairly effectively - but it sure is nice to have my tank merc to take the punches now.

As for SKs - again, imo, they're the EQ version of "the new black" - meaning, at least on my server (FV) they seem to be the current "it" class to play. Never having played one I'm not that familiar with the class but I keep hearing about SKs being able to "swarm" tons of mobs at a time, which sounds to me like a variation on kiting/AoE, but I could be wrong about that. If you enjoy playing a SK you'll be in good company!

Hah, I play a Paladin as my main on EQ2, so I'm actually used to the whole AE obsession, though there's always Paladin too...my old main on this was a Warrior, but I'm really not in the mood to play a plain old Warrior, for now at least

Ahh right, I forgot that mercs were introduced to EQ1 before EQ2, so that's pretty cool, that's the one thing that got me annoyed when it came to this, after seeing my mom solo on her druid, I became envious of the classes that COULD solo, glad to see we have more options

There has been no nerfs to the other tank classes.

SK's are the tank of choice atm in the group game only. Due to their utility ie: pulling skills from lvl 85 where they get an instant aggro drop FD AA. Their AE and single aggro tools and of coarse swarming potential. The reason I say potential re swarming is because it takes a major investment of AA's and gear/AC augs to make effective swarming possible.

While a two second loss of positioning relative to the mobs when dealing with a big pull = quick death (true corners to back into are golden while swarming and make the difference between life and death..otherwise fighting on your mount could stop the mob "push" to help keep the mobs in front of the SK till the pull size is wittled down).

So unlike Bard/Druid AE etc their is more risk as the SK is taking blows/damage from all of the mobs while swarming. If you never die while swarming then your being too conservative as deaths come with the job.

Good luck and enjoy.

I like these added options as well. When I began EQ back in 1999 my first character was a Paladin but since I enjoyed soloing I switched over to druid as my main. With the mercs, I can now solo my Paladin with a wizard merc and have been enjoying playing her again.

Az should probably explain...

...but where I am from the reference would be any of: "every girl needs a little black dress to go out in as it suits all occasions" or "black t-shirt = concert apparell" or "any car looks cooler in black" or even... "anything is hipper or hipster if it is black".

Basically black is super-cool, the slickest.

I feel silly saying it, but there you have it. ---and the only black car I own is flat black (but my winter car would look WAY better black. hmm.).

SKs seem to have taken over from mages as being the dominant class in the casual game. Mercs certainly help make them more viable in comparison to traditional solo classes.

OMG! Flat Black! I hate it, but have a friend with a 30 Model A that is flat black also. I had planned on getting a van and painting it flag black, then hand painting a mural on it then coating in gloss afterwards to give it some depth and shine and to make the mural seem more in the distance, but it would of still had gloss clear coat on top.

Still you could post a picture, and maybe I'd change my mind. Smiley: smile

My friend doesn't like it now, but won't change it. I think he secretly still likes it, but sees how most people don't so says he doesn't. Smiley: tongue

And speaking of black, I like the new mustang commercial with all the cool colors and paint jobs, except for the all black one. It's too bland for some reason (maybe due to no chrome showing anywhere on the all black version?).

Yther Ore.

LOL - didn't realize my comment would start a car paint conversation.

Snailish has the basic idea. A formal explanation can be found here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_new_black

Women use this phrase a lot in the fashion industry as in, "Red is the new black" - the translation meaning that "basic black" is a staple of women's wardrobes (it goes with anything), so if red is "in" this season, it is considered the new "goes with anything" color. A loose translation of this is sometimes used in reference to age: "50 is the new 40" meaning that with people being more health conscious plus different styles of dress vs. years ago, someone who is 50 today may look like what 40 did in the past. Ok, that may have muddied the waters a bit.

I used the phrase to indicate that in EQ, SK's are the new tank/cleric/enchanter - whatever the preferred class du jour is or in other words - the "new black." (Before anyone asks, du jour is French for "of the day.")

Hehe,

Or a good old rock and roll comparison as in AC/DC's classic rock song : Back in Black = hip indeed.

No, I meant "SKs are the new black" based on the current popular usage of it. Unless you were referring to "du jour" - which I also meant.
