Need Help With the Prayer Shawl Quest, PleaseFollow

Any veteran players remember this quest? Smiley: grin I've only been working on it on and off for the last 7 years...lol.

So, I completed Coldain Shawl #7 (The Runed Prayer Shawl). Took it to Loremaster Borannin as directed, handed the completed shawl to him and...nothing. Received the shawl back without the next prompting dialogue to show the shawl to the Dain or Chamberlain Krystorf. I tried just giving it to him, hailing him first - nothing worked. (I'm ally faction to the Coldains so that's not the issue.)

I was a bit hestitant (still am) to proceed on to giving the shawl to the Dain/Chamberlain Krystorf without Loremaster Borannin saying his bit. The walk-through also looks like he gives the shawl marked with a (1) on the end which has something to do if the Dain is spawned or not.

Deciding to live dangerously, I continued on to Icewell Keep. I'd never been there before and got hopelessly lost. Turned on tracking and managed to fall far down into water. Decided not to push it and come here instead. So...

1. Does anyone know why Loremaster Borannin isn't saying the dialogue when I hand the shawl to him?

2. Is there a relatively easy way to find the Dain/Chamberlain Krystorf?

Thank you in advance!

1. Not sure about this one. But on my server in January there were some issues with Thurgadin npcs. Sometimes the zone repopped as though someone had failed the ring war (Coldain corpses everywhere). This was happening even when no one was running the event.

2. Dain/Chamberlain is confusing the first time you go there. After crossing the moat, go through the front gate then right. Somewhere on the east wall of the first floor are some stairs. Go up. I believe you have to go up two floors (been a while for me). The next stairwell is near the first one on the 2nd floor. On the 3rd floor you should appear in a large chamber, and there will be a throne to the north. The Dain will either be there, or in his chambers behind the throne (unless he was recently killed). The Chamberlain is near the throne.

Did you get the "quest completed" sound effect when you did the turn in?

I know one guildie of mine recently did the quest on an alt, and somewhere along the way an npc at his shawl. He petitioned and they gave it back to him. I would try handing in to the Loremaster one more time. Then Icewell and see what happens. Good luck.

*Edit - I vaguely remember one of the npc's in Thurg wouldn't respond unless you were sitting in front of him. Could be the Loremaster? Try no illusion, no lev, no invis, no shrink, and then sit in front of him and hail. If he responds then turn in. If you don't need to be sitting for the step it will still work. I can't remember if this was the npc that needed that.

Thank you so much for your response, Candara; I really appreciate it! Thank you as well for the detailed info on finding Dain/Chamberlain.

No, I didn't get the quest completed sound effect - absolutely nothing happened; the shawl was just handed back to me (thank goodness!) Giving the shawl to Dain/Chamberlain without the Loremaster's response and having the shawl eaten is my concern. I will try your the sitting suggestion. I double-checked that I didn't have invis on before approaching him and I didn't use lev or shrink at all earlier, but didn't try sitting.

Your post gave me another idea; if the Loremaster doesn't respond, instead of going to the next hand-in I'll contact customer service.

*EDIT: I just tried the hand-in again - seated, standing, hailing first - still nothing. I just sent a ticket to customer service. There was actually a "Quests" choice for issues. Also, your directions to find the Dain/Chamberlain were PERFECT and sooo easy I was embarrassed. The Dain wasn't there or in his chambers (do people still kill him?) but I did find the Chamberlain so once I get the hand-in issue resolved, I will be able to easily go to my next NPC. Many thanks again. Smiley: smile

Odd that the loremaster isn't responding. Hopefully the petition clears things up. Best of luck! I love that quest line.

Maybe he's had too much ale. Smiley: lol I haven't had a problem with any of the other NPCs in this quest.

I really enjoy this quest line as well; for one thing it gives incentive to get most trade skills to 100+. Apparently there is a second part of this quest now; I'll check into that when I get this one done...lol.

The new quest Still Hungry

Believe it or not, that was a source of complaints. People said the shawl was so good it led to people doing the quest that had no interest in tradeskills (you need to be maxed in every trade) and that added new artisan's to the world.

As if the ones doing it just for the shawl were more evil because they did it for an item and not for the love of tradeskills.

Way back when, this quest was HUGE with almost everyone I knew in EQ, which spanned many years and two guilds. I recall guildies buying tons of fish to begin skilling up in cooking, then out hunting for skins, etc. In my second guild I participated in the final battle so one of my guild mates could get his final shawl. That was the closest to a raid I've been in; we had several full groups to accomplish that fight. I imagine now it could be moloed or done with just a couple of people. :/ (Of course the highest level at that time was 60-65).

Getting that shawl was considered one of the major achievements of the game at the time. Now, sadly, the stats on the shawl are pitiful by today's standards but, being Old School EQ at heart, completing this quest will still be very meaningful to me.

Thank you, snailish, for posting the links to the new quests. Smiley: smile

I received a response via email from a GM the next business day. Very impressed with that. The GM said that she saw I had attempted to turn in my shawl to the Loremaster so I could just proceed on to the Dain or the Chamberlain if the Dain was not present.

Now I need to purchase another Station Pass. Smiley: wink

As instructed in the response to my ticket I filed with customer service, I went to the Dain, who I found in his quarters, presented my shawl to him and received the "quest portion completed" sound and new dialogue.

The Dain instructed me to go to Loremaster Solstrin in Icewell Keep for further instructions. This is interesting: The dialogue that Loremaster Borannin was *supposed* to say was said by Solstrin, then he continued with his regular part of his quest dialogue so apparently somewhere along the line this was changed.

I *thought* all I had left was the final battle. Looks like I'll be utilizing the trade skills from the previous shawls to fashion armor first. I skimmed over the page of instructions, took a deep breath, and will now just take it one step at a time.

At least after these many years the end is in sight!!!

I'm so glad this worked out :) I remember that last step. Farming Geonids in Wakening lands to get gems to etch lol. Fun times. I really miss quests like this.

Sort of related - I had the 2nd last Coldain ring in my bank for years, and a couple of guildies and I finally ran the ring war recently. That brought back some memories. Ah Velious...

Good luck on the last step.

Thanks, Candara Smiley: smile And woot for doing the ring war. Velious was my very favorite expansion!

Just thought of something else - as a level 80 druid with a Journeyman Tank merc, do you think I could solo the final fight? The only time I participated in it was when the highest level was 60 or 65. If I can't solo it, most likely bringing along a level 90 SK who can single-handedly clear out that Mechamatic Guardian thing could. (A friend I've watched in action.)

You can easily handle it at that level. A small word of advice: The General you escort can be accidentally targetted, aggroed, caught in AEs etc. But as long as you are in melee range of the ambushers they should attack you first. The General regens fairly quickly if he does take some damage. At 80 you will probably kill the ambush mobs in 2 or 3 nukes at most.

The most recent Iceclad maps from mapfiend have the ambush points labelled on them as well.

I'm sure you will do fine :)
