Thinking about coming back to this game after around 6 yearsFollow

Hello Eq1 Peoples!

I have a group of 3 people considering a return to the good old world of Norrath. We recently played through a private solo server for fun, but sadly it ends at Gates of Discord.

Having played EQ way back in the day though, we have some questions on what exactly has changed.

With such a massive amount of content, did they tone down fights to be a bit more groupable at the lower tiers? Do you still require a full raid to do stuff like ToV and Kael? We would like to hit up all these old zones while leveling.

I've read about the new merc system. Would 3 people + 3 mercs be capable of doing most of the content? I hear they are powerful enough to solo nagafen and stuff at level 50, so that does make it sound like we will be able to do anything as we go through the content.

I guess tl;dr- Can we trio+merc raid zones or do you still need 72 people to do kael at 60? :p

Nothing has changed from the mob's perspective. All fights are as they were.

However, Defiant armor and weapons have given players an enormous boost in power.

The Mercenaries you can hire are built based off this much higher power potential, so they also will destroy quite a lot of the older content.

You will eventually run into stuff that even your upgraded power and merc's will struggle with and ToV is a good example of that.

That said, you'll still fair quite well on stuff that took a full blown raid to do.

PoP is probably the first expansion that will really stop you completely from blowing through old raid content unless you level up higher than it was meant to handle.

Getting your 1.5 / 2.0 epic type stuff at 75 or 80 instead of where it was meant for at 70 is pretty standard to give an idea on that.

I recently did something similar with a couple of other people where we made a list of Goals and level caps and was quite fun, so it is certainly doable as you progress up with only a couple of other people + merc's.

For what has changed and other useful comments read the re-read the Returning/New Players thread. Then If you have specific questions post and wait for the guru Yther to inform.

Awesome! thanks for the reply. So PoP on would pretty much be impossible for us unless we made all the gear obsolete? That is a bit of a shame. Would our specific classes have any affect on it? I think we would be more than willing to roll with 3 classes that actually make it possible (Maybe shaman/highest dps/something). We have played up until PoP a few times from way back in the day to our recent irreverent server progression run, so I think most of the focus would be post PoP.

It's not impossible, just you won't be able to 1-group all (or even much) of the raid content from that expansion (PoP) on at the level it was designed for. However, 5 levels will make alot of it do-able with one group. That being said, a single high level (85+) friend would be able to solo most raid for several expansions past PoP, and some for a few more, and with some help, probably upto TSS.

Mercs are not allowed in most, if not all now, raid instances. almost everything PoP and earlier is static however. Raid instances didn't become dominant until Omens of War's Asylum of Anguish zone and most raid zones after that. Gates of Discord had some instances, raid and group, and I think some of the static raid zones in that expansion don't allow mercs (or they're instances, and I just think they're static :D )

The following post has links to most of the expansion release patch notes for all of the newer expansions, except the newest VoA, which was just released the last month or so and should be easy to find, from the pages linked, or for the https://everquest.allakhazam.com/news_archives.html page: https://everquest.allakhazam.com/forum.html?forum=1&mid=130800292372465845#4

Along with the returning players thread, the patch notes should get you pretty well up-to-date with the changes. You may have specific questions after reading those though.

The following post and thread may give some idea about what's possible: https://everquest.allakhazam.com/forum.html?forum=1&mid=1319530208202078411#3

Hope this helps some.

Yikes! I guess it would be a bit too difficult to keep going if we can't use mercs for raid stuff. I'll have to dig through those notes a bit. I think the last of our goals is end game, we just want to do allt he content leading up to it, everything from GoD-> even 2 expansions below the current one. That's just such a massive amount of content. It's a shame eq doesn't open a group server or something! Private servers that modify everything to fit the solo/group player tend to die off around GoD, but that experience is probably the most fun I have had in MMO's. No game comes close to Everquest in sheer level of content, so having literally all of it to progress through in a small group setting was just straight up awesome, and that's with half of the expansions enabled.

There's still a ton of groupable content. And some raid stuff is opened raided, like Anguish. Anguish is a fun raid to do, and needed for the orbs for the 2.0 epics, and is why it's open raided on most, if not all, servers. If you do the content at level (70), it will be challenging to stay alive and deal with the events, and the loot will be awesome, even better than defiant for level.

All of the old world content will be worthless gear wise, if not for clickies and the like, with the availability of defiant gear. That being said, the raids are still fun, and the clickies can be useful for a long time, if not ever. If you plan on having alts, raiding old content can provide the alts with some twinkish gear as well.

I mention this stuff, because you seem interested in doing the content, just for doing it. If it's for equipment, you probably can't beat defiant overall till 80, as it's easy to get, generally cheap to buy, and is comparable to raid gear, other than defiant weapons don't really compare to level appropriate raid weapons. At higher levels, if it's available for sale, you can get items for Thach Jerden's turn-ins for some excellent (better than defiant) gear. See the quest at https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/quest.html?quest=4847 for details on that.

I'll shut up now, just didn't want you to be discouraged. Tons of stuff in EQ to do, even if it's not Trio-able raid stuff. :)
