I know Ranger wears chain male and Warrior wears plate mail. So if both had 6000 ac would they both be able to tank the same mob or which of the two would take less damage from incomming melee? I am aware disc's play a part but would a warrior be better at tanking a mob than a Ranger? I am new.to melee class.

I'm going to answer with an educated guess. I would think it unlikely that a ranger will have the same AC as a warrior, given the same level/gear. Also, AA's are going to play a big part when it comes to how well a certain class can mitigate damage.

While Jmeajh's comment is correct, I don't think that's what he's asking....

If a Ranger and a Warrior both have 6000 AC, does that mean they can tank equally, as far as AC goes?

The short answer is no. If you do some Bing/Google searches, I'm sure you'll be able to find the details, but the basics are like this: AC has internally coded caps that differ by class and armor type. So even though it says 6000 AC, you're not really getting 6000 AC. Basically you get 1 for 1 AC for the first few hundred points of AC, and how few depends on armor type. Silkies may get 200, leather 300, chain 400, and plate 500. Those numbers aren't right, but are in the ballpark, and illustrate the point. For all AC over that amount, you only get a small percentage of it in actual AC, and the percentage is best for plate, then less so for chain, less than that for leather, and worst for silk. The only exception is shield AC, which is always 1 for 1 AC, regardless of these caps and percentages.

So for 4 chars all with 6000 AC, the plate wearer will have the highest actual effective AC, then the chain wearer, then leather, then silk.

I agree with Tat.

And that doesn't even factor into the defensive AA's that a warrior gets. I know you didn't mention them in your question but they have a HUGE impact on tanking so it is something to consider. Even if you could get the effective same AC on both the warrior will still tank better because they have better defensive AA's.

That said I have seen some Rangers tank and do it pretty well. I have also seen rangers who just think they are tanks.

Excellent answer Tat. Well described.

In addition to everthing you said, which was spot on, the warrior, I think, has higher defensive skills and innate mitigation/avoidance. It's not just AC that goes into the equation to see if two characters can tank the same. There's a lot more that goes in, including AAs and other gear which we haven't really touched on that much.

That being said, I have some friends in game on Drinal where the Ranger is the tank, and she's an excellent tank (though ranger tanks are very highly AA and gear dependent.)

Thank you all for the answers I had wondered about that and pretty sure not the only one. I never knew all shields equal out but guess that makes sense.

Warriors mitigate/avoid damage better then rangers. So a equal geared/aa/buffed warrior will always tank better then a ranger. That being said my ranger has no issues tanking any content in EQ. He group buffs out to 62khp/6620ac thats without a shield and max defensive aa's.

PS Ignore the sig. i havent used magelo in awhile and havent updated sig in years either.

guys its allways been this way ac fer each type has modifiers the mods fer cloth is 1x the mod fer leather is 2x the mod fer chain is 3x and plate is 4x now this means incoming migration of dammage taken will be afgfected by mods so 6000 ac cloth the weakest and plate 6000ac being strongest in incoming dammage migration hopes this info helps ya but chain is weaker then plate even if number is equal on ac value

I read this on samanna, might be different now, Im not sure:

Soft Caps
Cloth..........= ~75 worn AC (yes its really that low)
Leather......= ~100 worn AC
Monk..........= ~120 worn AC (if they are under 15 stone wieght)
Chain.........= ~200 worn AC
Plate .........= ~300 worn AC

You may be shocked at how low those number are, I certainly was. My robe alone has 75 AC on it, so I hit my soft cap with 1 piece of gear! Everyone reading this can go check their character right now and Im sure you will see that you are all way above the softcap. Hitting the AC soft cap for your character is trivial in EQ today. So what we really want to know about is how effective is worn AC AFTER the softcap. The answer varies by class:

AC returns after the soft cap has been reached
45%: Warrior (from Devs)
33%: Knight (from Devs), Monk (reportedly equal to Knight? via Zajeer?)
23%: Cleric, Bard (via L2), BZR (rough estimate based off of parsing)
17%: BST, Ranger (BST is ~1/2 of the monk, ranger hearsay)
6%: Druid, Enc, Mag, Nec, Wiz (~1/3 of BST -- Druid was quoted as "lowest")
Rogue, Shaman? Probably they are close to cleric returns.

6000 warrior = 300 + 5700*45=2865
6000 ranger = 200 + 5800*17 =1186
