Progression Server QuestionFollow

So the last night I played EQ prior to my current temporary hiatus I created a toon on the Fippy progression server. Whew! MUCH harder than I recall Old School EQ when I made alts back in the day. (Since I knew absolutely nothing about MMORPG's, my first toon was a bit of a learning curve...lol.) After 4 hours of play I FINALLY dinged 2 and had almost more of a sense of accomplishment than anything I have done with my FV main, except for achieving the Journeyman Baker's Trophy...I am proud of that. :)

So, question: Not sure what expansion the PS is up to currently, but do I need to take the boat from the Butcher Block docks to get from Faydwer to Antonica? I want to see the EC tunnels again before they poof! I noticed level 50's on the server so I doubt I'll level up fast enough to have the fun to being asked for SoW or ports again.

Just curious how much like Old School EQ the PS is.

Thanks :)

Fippy is still slightly ahead of Vulak, but they are both on Velious. Luclin is ~2 months away, give or take.

There are translocators at the docks that will teleport you to the other side, so you don't have to take the boats if you don't want to (I think they still work, but personally, I never waited.)

On Vulak, most of the trading takes place in West Freeport at the bank, not in the WC tunnel, as far as I can tell. I don't know about Fippy.

The servers are very much old school, but please keep in mind that they are progression, not classic. They have some elements from the game now (such as OOC regen), but approximate the experience from back then.

Some of my fondest memories from the distant past were the boat rides. Sure they took longer, but could be a lot of fun, especially with a friend, and provided some great conversations. The boat (or ship) from BB to Freeport was straight-forward, providing one got on the right ship, but iirc, the one to FV entailed getting off the ship at some point and getting on a smaller boat. I missed that a couple of times and ended up on some forlorn ice floe in the middle of the ocean with no earthly clue of what to do and not sure what level mobs were around, if any. (This situation was problematic for my non-gating toons.)

Wasn't there also a North Freeport at one time as well? I don't recall which part of Freeport it was, but I do remember people being outside the Freeport bank, usually asking for SoWs...but it was never a bargaining spot on my former server. A friend said the EC tunnel was the barter spot on Fippy as in the old days, but it could have changed by now. That was one of the main things I wanted to experience again.

I have noticed the main difference from old school being experience much slower, at least solo, and the mobs in the newbie zone, at least in Kelethin, being yellow & red instead of green as in the past. Very humbling to be killed by a bee...lol.

EDIT - errrr, wasp, not bee!

-the mob /con system is the new way (new as in 5+ years ago changed on regular servers).

-The xp curve mod makes the low levels harder than they were back in the day to solo... in a group, it's a different story. Group xp on progression is way faster. My necro mostly soloed to 45 there and it was painfully slow for a person familiar with the class (due to the cap on xp per kill).

-numerous other modernisms are there "ahead of sched" (newbie armor, modern research system, melee augments, monk fist ratio, caster spell dps, etc.).

BUT, if playing there is fun for a person... long live the special rulesets.

I (erroneously) thought the progression servers were ones that began with original/classic EQ and then slowly added the expansion content over time. *sigh*

I read somewhere there is a "Classic EQ" that will only have the original continents (I think), but is played on certain servers that are downloaded. I was really tired when I stumbled on that info and, since the place I read this had a lot of posts debating which server worked better on what type PC, etc., I quit reading and bookmarked it.

Has anyone played that version? It "sounds" more like what I want, but then, so did the progression servers until I got there.

For legitmate old-school the closest you can get is playing on the Mac server. I've read posts about doing that with a PC... I think I would just find an old mac that still runs, seeing as the reqs haven't gone up for that server for 8+ years.

Illegitmate you are talking emulator servers. If you trust the person(s) running such a beast to not change it all (or shut it down) on a whim... my understanding is there is many flavors out there.

And on that note: I have lvl 19 ranger on Fippy. Where should I go to solo. The gobby caves off of MT are to much agro and the Gorge is too slow.Smiley: frown

Yes!!! I think I recall the servers being either called emulator servers or my impression being they were something along those lines. Ok...scratch that...lol. But thank you, snailish :)

I'm impressed you're level 19. Getting from level 1 to 2 seemed like a major accomplishment/frustration/time-sink/take-your-pick. ;)
