Other (newer) Mercs?Follow

As I mentioned in another post of mine, I was familiar with a tank and cleric merc only. Just before the shutdown, I saw that there is now a Wizard and Rogue DPS type of merc available and I even believe I saw one in a group that I was hunting nearby in Nadox.

My question is, how do those mercs work and in what instances would they be best suited for?

I'm thinking of either 2 boxing (total of 4 people since 2 mercs) or my friend will take over the other account to play it for a while at least until he gets bored.

Here's the makeup I'm thinking of going with, but need input on 2nd merc. Myself (shammy + tank merc) and him (wizzy + ??? merc). I was thinking of trying one of those dps mercs, but I just don't know enough about them if we should go that route or maybe just settle on a cleric and essentially allowing us to just nuke/dps to our hearts content.

Which would you suggest giving the above scenario? What would that 2nd merc partner be?

It mostly depends on your levels. If you are <70 then you can go with a tank merc and probably a rogue dps merc. After 70 you'll probably need to trade in the dps merc for a cleric merc.

Just don't use a wizard merc pre-70. It's a waste of money and space.

Ok, so it sounds like 2 tank mercs would be the best way to go for now. We're going to be hoevering around the mid 50's in levels for now. I know the tank merc already does very well with a shaman.

Looks like it will be shammy, tank merc, wizzy, tank merc. We should be able to explore a lot of stuff in our lvl ranges w/o too much of a problem I think. It's mostly for sight seeing and having fun :). Thanks all for your help.

Oh I just had a thought for another question.

With the above makeup, would we be able to do our "epic" 1.0 weapons? I actually never got around to doing any of them back in my initial EQ days. With essentially 4 players, hovering at around lvl 55, would we be able to do the epics for a wizzy and shaman?

IF you solo mostly then the choice is warrior in most cases though with Monk/warrior classes *I* use the cleric as first choice mostly so the monk/warrior can skill up all melee skills with all weapons.

If you group a lot with the same folks you can add the other rogue and wizard mercs to "balance" your group if you like. Though the other posts I have seen the rogue merc is not smart enough to automatically get behind the mob so you have to do the positioning yourself... no idea if the wizard merc is easily controlled to prevent him (or her) from drawing too much attention too early. THough you could use the passive/active modes to try to keep the wiz from nuking too early...

The saddest part of mercs (to this point) is that the cleric does not use all the available buffs even when it makes sense... for example in the eastern wastes where weapons proc cold spells you should get the resist buff for cold... in a zone with lots of snakes, or shaman casters, the poison buffs and so forth...

Likely that is a decision to try to keep pressure on to enforce grouping... sadly, most players suck swamp water these days and so (in my opinion) are not worth grouping with... the few I have found I will group with in a heartbeat ... but so far... a really stupid merc is better than most players... and if I go back to two boxing (always a possiblility) well, I may be doing more expirimenting... :)

Running in a progression guild a few years back (pre defiant gear) we were able to trio at level 55(chanter, cleric, mage) most of the epic 1.0 for all 3 classes. Each of those particular classes had a few encounters that required more than that.

We weren't well-geared (well maybe the mage)and of course didn't have mercs.

My first chanter did most of his 1.0 while levelling 55-65 duoed with a necromancer that topped out at level 67. This was done super casually over a very long time. Again, a few fights were bigger matters with the chardok raid piece being a rot no one else needed (and the reason I started doing the quest actually since it was the first piece I got).

So the short answer, I think you will be able to do most of the 1.0 with a duo + mercs in modern gear. You'll likely need help for Chardok royals, Plane of Fear or whichever bottleneck or two like that the particular epic quest has in it. I've always found that people are quite willing help someone with the last few big kills on a epic though --especially if it is a mob you can spawn on demand.
