My initial break from EQ was shortly after LDoN. I returned for a brief time after the mercs became available and gave them a try. Had a blast with it but RL prevented me from continuing so I had to take another break shortly thereafter.

I re-subbed just 2-3 days prior to this whole security breach fiasco but was having an absolute blast. I can't wait to get back into the game.

Anyway, my questions are as follows:

1. While I am far from the end game currently, what is the ultimate goal (besides having fun) now? I mean, in the old days, it was to raid the Plane of Fear and Hate for their gear. And so on and so forth. I guess I'm asking for what should I be striving for once I do achieve the higher lvls?

2. I heard people in shout/ooc selling "tasks". What are these for and what do they do? Note: I only have up until the SoD expansion, the one that enabled the mercs I think.

3. My current strategy, since I'm only mid-50's in level, is to work on AA pts for now to further enhance my class skills. What strategy do you recommend for a good balance to work on lvl vs AA pts? I had someone mention to me that I should grind out until lvl 65 and then go full power on AA pts at that point. Any suggestions/recommendations?

4. Any other information you can offer that would help out? I'd appreciate it.

I'm on the Bertoxx-saryn server. Are there any guilds that are accepting casual old school players and willing to group now and then?

Thanks in advance for any info provided.

First and foremost play to have fun. With that said:

Stop working on AA's after you get run 3, and level up to 70 is the general advice folks give. Especially when you are only in your 50's. There are some class aa's for pets and things like headshot and endless quiver for ranger that are good to have at any level.

Tasks are missions you do to advance your character/improve gear,faction/gain access to areas. They have different names, different goals, and I haven't done any of them, as I recently got the expansions for them, then switched over to the time locked progression server (aka TLP) Vulak' Aerr. Tasks are designed for groups but some players are able to do them solo or with box toon or two, thereby leading to the practice of selling a group invite just before hailing/turn in of item for your reward.

Advice, go to the stickied threads here, read and then re- read the returning players posts along with the wiki pedia stuff that has been done.

Ahh gotcha. Thanks so much for the info. I missed one of the stickies that had a lot of info that helped a lot. I apologize for my oversight but I did read the newbie/returning player faq and got some general info from it.

I've since been reading the other stickies and learning about what some of the other stuff is that I've missed out on. Good information there.

I definitely appreciate the lvl'ing suggestions as well. Do you know of a site that has the AA list with required lvl associated as well? ZAM has a list of them, but I don't know what the lvl reqs are behind the various abilities/enhancements.

So far I havent found a list with the lvl req for each AA but many of them have more than one lvl of the AA. Like Innate Run has up to 5 lvls of Innate Run. Other AA's can have 20 or more lvls of that skill and then have a better version of that AA but you have to put "X" amount of AA into the lower version first before training in the next.

Each person has their own idea on how to do AA also but most seem to agree on one thing... AA are easier to get at lower lvls. So if this is true then doing AA now would be ideal.

Many will tell you that the amount of AA you get depends on the class you play. Warriors need tons of AA due to all the abilities/skills they have. Others say that a shaman doesnt need as many AA as other classes.

Some ppl will set a goal to max out all the AA their class can get. I know some that have 5k AA and kick butt and I know others that have as little as 1k and do very well also.

For myself, I usually put no less than 30% into AA at any time less I am almost to next lvl then 100% to xp until I get about 12% into lvl just to protect my lvl from xp loss due to deaths. This is for my shaman, my ranger and warrior do no less than 50/50 to AA/XP and then mix it up some just because they may need a certian AA skill now or maybe they have an item in bank that is lvl req that they need. Although my ranger is doing 100% AA right now till she reaches 1k AA then back to 50/50.

If you do nothing but AA you will get tired of being the same lvl for what seems to be forever! Its always nice to see the xp bar move. One thing tho to concider is that AA xp is easier to get than regular XP at anytime from my experience. (my shaman is 88, warrior is 83, ranger is 75) All my other toons do the 50/50 rule but think Ill do some experimenting of my own.

It really just depends on how you choose to play your class and the game in the end. Are you one who wants to be in a raid guild? If so, most raid guilds have a min AA req to join along with a lvl req. If you just want to be good enough to play your class well and group for fun then you need to decide what AA you want and get them.
So decide HOW you want to play first then go from there.
Good luck!

Thank you very much for the info! I appreciate it.

I ended up picking up An additional key for HoT for a friend of mine (or multibox for myself if he ends up not wanting to play) at Amazon like someone mentioned for $20.

I'm having fun exploring all of the content I was never able to see so I'll stick to my mid 50's and continue to do so for a while.

I was curious about another thing. A friend of mine asked about faction. He wants to play "the most hated race in the game" haha.

Are the Iksar still considered the "most hated"? I thought I read a while back that they kinda neutralized starting faction for most races? Maybe I misunderstood that.

My friend wants to be a wizard, though, so that would leave the Iksar out. What would be the next "best" thing? DE's?

Hate generated from race/deity choice really only plays out in the pre-luclin content, and for velious most of the significant faction issues you can alter or ignore depending on what you want to do. Someone else posted that Rallos Zek and Veeshan as deities can have a slight impact in Velious with some content.

Basically, unless you play on timelocked progression server, no one will know you are hated because almost nothing (has anything?) since Planes of Power has built upon the original "vision" of faction in EQ.

Iksars are hated in all the starting cities but Shar Val (Vah Shir) and Crescent Reach (Drakkin)to my recollection.

Faction is race + deity + class and the actions you can take (i.e., enchanter spells that work mostly in old world, killing or quests for faction).

Wizards as a class should be fine wherever (vs. Shadowknights or paladins who by being what they are gain some enemies).

Wizards (to my recall) have a pretty wide deity range choice, usually (always) including agnostic. If you want to be hated go with a more evilish deity (Innoruuk for Dark elves, not sure what others are possible with the game being offline).

There's always the option of rolling a high-elf agnostic wizard and letting your deeds make you hated...

Edit: as for "most hated" it's probably a toss up if more people (as in players that rant about the race) hate halflings or drakkin at this point... but each has it loyal following too.

DE Necro with a religion ought to do it... :)

The thing is, with faction, should you chose to do so, you can pretty much fix most of the faction if you don't mind doing the work...

On the other hand, should you want to do so, start killing guards when you get tall enough and that will also increase the number of places that you cannot go to ...
