On TLP these aren't something a "newbie" will accomplish (more like mid-level +)
Unless you're talking Warrior or Rogue, everyone should have a full set of their newbie quested armor on Fippy or Vulak by level 10. There are a few exceptions like Kelethin Warriors, but not because it's difficult. It's simply because the quests are poorly designed, the drop rates are OBSCENELY low, there are only a few (roughly three or four) mobs up in the entire zone at any point in time (if any are up at all due to the way the spawns work), the mobs roam through orc camps full of aggro, and the mob spawns can get bugged to hell and back.
Which means A) you aren't likely to be able to do it solo as a Warrior, B) it'd take you hours upon hours (upon hours) even with a tracker, and C) no one's going to help you do it unless they have the patience of a saint.
I did it on my two-box with a 21 Magician and a scrap level 1 Ranger just for tracking, and it took two days.
Two entire afternoons.
For newbie armor.
With crap stats.
The only reason I finished it was because I get as stubborn as a bulldog about finishing what I start. Which leads to very masochistic tendencies in MMOs. Which is probably why I like EQ as much as I do.
Kelethin Warrior rant aside...
If you're on Fippy or Vulak there's no reason most level 10s can't complete the vast majority of the newbie armor quests.
HOWEVER.
On the other hand, it's not even worth your time on some characters. For some priests and casters there's absolutely no reason to bother. +1 Wis or +1 Int on a piece of gear (even on all your pieces of gear) is absolutely unnoticable and will never make any difference. Sure, there are a few oddly good pieces like the Troll Shaman bracers that have +5 Wis EACH. +5 Wis on ALL your gear will begin to make a noticable difference in your mana pool, so that's not a bad start.
(Though let's be honest; unless you're talking about a TON of Int or Wis, priests and casters in EQ don't benefit much from gear in the first place compared to melee, and even then it's primarily just a mana pool issue. Important but not critical in most cases. SOE finally realized that when they introduced spell foci and gave casters a reason to give a crap about gear upgrades beyond "oooh it's a different color".)
If you plan on meleeing as a cleric or shaman while solo at the early levels, sure, I guess the AC might help a little, but frankly if you're on a Prog server you shouldn't be soloing anyway. Unless you're a Mage or Necro or multiboxing (and even THEN), you should be grouping from level 1 and up because of how the xp cap works.
And then you have sets of newbie armor that's just 100% worthless with no redeeming qualities whatsoever, like the Kelethin Druid set.
For melee, the newbie quests are decent because they give you a fair chunk of AC, though the stats are extremely hit or miss. The Neriak SK helm? Pretty dang nice stats. Most other pieces of newbie armor? Why is there Wis on Warrior gear? Why is there Agi on Cleric gear? I'll say one thing for it; it's definitely indicative of how EQ itemization used to be, and so nostalgic in an acidic kind of way.
With all that said...
Frankly my advice is that unless you're tanking or unless you have easily completed newbie quests, skip them. Just group up and make money. Sell spiderling silks for 1 or 2pp each. Sell LMHQ pelts for much more. You can buy far better gear for practically nothing, and in many cases people will just give an obviously poorly equipped character gear on the Prog servers.
As much of a fuss as some people made about the newbie quests killing the banded armor market, it's really irrelevant when both banded and the newbie armor is 90% EASILY replaced crap in the first place.
