New Player / Progression ServerFollow

I was thinking about giving everquest a shot and had a few questions about the progression servers.

I would like to play the "story" if you will, from the beginning and a progression server seems to be sort of a restart on that so its got my attention.

I was mostly wondering how extensive the original few expansions were.. what the level cap was about how many zones etc...

and if any of the fine tuning mmo's go through over the years would be incorporated (or if it is just a hard reset to the previous expansion(s) lol)

Also I was wondering what expansion the current progression server was on.. I know wiki said there was something like 17 expansions.. I'd just like to know how far the server has progressed so far...

thanks in advance

OK, in no particular order.
Both Time locked servers are currently original game zones. Level cap is 50. The vote to open up Kunark raising level to 55, was going to be in June iirc. No telling when it will be now.
Newbie armor quests are available, and the boats have been replaced by the translocators.(So no long voyages between zones. )

As far as the story line, yes you can get involved in parts that are set in the original game and the 3 continents.

As far as how many zones there are, go to the data base here at zam click on zones by era. That will list the zones by expansion.

Kunark is 60, not 55.

Beyond that - Velious is 60 still, Luclin is 60 still, PoP is 65 still, LoY/LDoN/GoD are all 65 still, OoW is 70, DoN/PoR/DoDH are all 70 still, TSS is 75, TBS is 75 still, SOF is 80, SOD is 85, UF is 85, HOT is 90.

Join us on the progression servers! Though it has truly been nostalgic for a returning player, I feel it may take some effort for you to find the passion EQ players share for the game. Having the opportunity to meet the community in the newbie zones will help reel you in. The community so far on Vulak has been great! People really want to help each other out. Don't be shy. Request players for groups.

A progression server is certainly a great opportunity to play the story. And, there will be plenty for you to do. The world is already huge in vanilla, and there is plenty of content to experience. How big you asked? https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/zone.html?mode=bycont We currently have access to Antonica, Odus, and Faydwer. That zone list will be misleading to you as some of those zones are unlocked in later expansions. But, that will give you an idea. There has been lots of fine tuning that has launched w/ the progression servers. Most for the better I feel. For example, dieing is far less painful than it once was but still a far greater consequence than most games.

When you begin your adventure and have picked your race and class, you may want to begin the armor quests. Zam is the resource I use for the armor quests. To find the quests for your race and class combo you should search Zam. To find mine I follow, Database> Quests> By Zone> The zone I wake up in. Don't expect EQ to be linear and hold your hand. EQ is big, dark, cold and dangerous. That is why the community is so tight.

Thanks for the feedback... another question i have is

What do i buy exactly to play the game?

The Sony website seems to be down atm because they got hacked and i checked amazon.com.. there are just so many expansions and what not.

Is there an anniversary pack or collection anybody would recommend buying.. or does the latest expansion come with all the previous ones?

If it comes down to it i'll buy it on steam or digital download.. but i'd prefer to have the discs just for the convenience of (re)installing..

god knows how long it would take to download all the expansions on satellite

The latest expansion, House of Thule, I believe includes all of the previous expansions. I have been purchasing digital downloads through Sony, but if you wish to have the discs then I believe you can purchase House of Thule at say, Gamestop. Otherwise, I believe you may be able to purchase discs through Sony. I am unsure if EQ expansions have become digital only.

Yes, downloading the game through a DSL connection would probably take several hours. On the bright side, if you could digital download through a site outside of Sony, you will have plenty of time to download the game before the servers come back up. We don't even know how long we will be kicked out of Norrath for. Hopefully not much longer!

After writing this I did a little research. Steam House of Thule digital download does include all prior expansions! If you are concerned about the time it may take to (re)install, then this may not be for you.

On my Cable download I recall about an hour and a half to two hours.

As to the HoT package, if you can afford it get the premium package as there are a few more goodies within that may prove useful. Just be aware that each is only usable on one character on one server on one account. As in you only get one of each ... :)

But, for my monk nothing was nicer than to have two bags of 16 and 20 slots respectfully that is 100% weight reduction and weighs 0.1 ... judicious use means significant gameplay increase.

it doesn't really matter what you buy (disk or digital), there will still be a huge download the first time you use it. always buy the latest expansion, should get you all the rest of them. that's a great deal for the newcomers, pretty crappy deal for those of us who have been buying expansions for the past 12 years.

House of Thule was on sale on Amazon for $20 as a digital download. Got two copies last week. Includes all the expansions and a month of game time, everything you need.

If you're concerned about the download time, the download from Amazon was fast... ~25 mins from start to installed iirc.
