Few questions from returning player.Follow

Hi all.

I stopped playing before mercs or defiant gear were out. I think I had a 71 Ranger as my highest. Last year sometime, I came back briefly, but only very briefly due to RL stuffs. While I'm currently having a blast on Vulak, I was thinking of rolling some characters on live as well to play when I'm satisfied with having gotten all I want out of the current expansion until the next one is voted in, aside from any raid obligations I might have if I find a raiding guild on Vulak. Having read up a bit on the live servers, I had a few questions.

Do Defiant gear drops basically make camping gear meaningless until endgame? I'm assuming there are a few things I'd want to get, like a haste item for any melee, but other than that is there any reason to try camping mobs?

Is it true that you're basically out of luck for groups until you're 80+ and guilded? While not a dealbreaker specifically, I'm curious if this is true or if it's overblown.

What kind of content could a duo take on with two mercenaries? Are mercenaries viable all throughout the game or does their usefulness taper off at some point?

Most FAQs for returning folks on both these forums and the (currently offline) official forums are several years old and don't cover the modern EQ scenario.

Thanks for your time.

Well I returned not too long ago and i had a few of the same questions. here is what i found.

Defiant gear:
Yes and no. I still camp some gear but generally it is just augs and gear with specific procs or effects that i want. camping gear for use of just the stats doesnt happen.

Grouping:
TLP servers you can group all day and have a blast.
Live servers, 2 months of lfg on and advertising for a group at 75 has yielded 0 groups. Attempting to put a group together has also been a exercise in futility. at 71 i assume your results would be the same. This is on the my server so your server may be different.

merc/content
at 75 i go into verigald mines with my merc and it is slow but not a whole lot of danger. you should not have much trouble with RSS named if your gear is ok with 2 players and 2 mercs i would say. I have yet to see a drop off at 75 for the value of mercs. working through the merc tier progression will prolly make them more valuable (tier 5 mercs cost 10k pp so they are prolly better than the journeman guys i am using who cost like 800pp)

Hope that helps and welcome back

Hi and welcome back, first off.

Defiant gear is pretty good up until about level 75-79. Then you can start finding some nice stuff available, and pack on several thousand HP overnight if you've saved your platinum and want to shop in the bazaar. If not, just beg to tag along with a group or two once you make it to 80. Better yet, make friends with some 85+ players. They don't have to be in your guild. There are a lot of people to meet on General chat, and you'll find that by running around some of the newer zones, someone ought to drop a mercenary to make room for you.

The /lfg tool has not been much help for 3-4 years now. General chat usually has about 200 players in it, so that's the place to be. Your mercenary can be upgraded to tier 5 once you're 75, but you will need quite a lot of help in order to make that happen. So, run around and meet people. Ask to join groups. Not enough people think to do that. If you approach it the right way, you'll get lucky more often than you think.

Defiant Gear is an inexpensive way to give your toon some nice stats, good (not great) weapons and an Aug to fill in the spots while you are leveling up. Once you establish yourself at the level you want, be it for AAing or Just to gain spells and experience of your surrounding then you will find better items. And of Coarse nothing replace joining a guild and getting raid gear if they are so inclined.
Mercenaries help a lot if you are a solo player or need a healer in a small group. They, Healer Mercs, can save your butt. Or if you are a healer and can use a Tank alongside Pets. With two toons and mercs example Ranger with healing merc, Tank with a Rouge merc…can be pretty deadly and fast.
Grouping has been tough. A lot of player’s multi box themselves and population is down compared to what it used to be. Join a guild and grouping becomes easier. It is a timing thing also. Are you on when everyone else is?

You are also more likely to get a group in the hot zones.

I never thought about it but maybe I should advertise my two little private guilds for those under lvl 80. Then atleast more ppl could have a chance to find a grp within their lvl range. With 2 accounts, both full, I have toons of many different lvl ranges that could group with lower lvls.

Joining a guild I think is your best bet. Check the guild boards in the guild lobby and see who is recruiting for your game play. Haning in gl and /ooc LFG... doesnt really work as most are either afk or getting buffs after dying and heading back to their group. General chat is a good place to LFG as was said, avg of 200 are there. Also you can see what loot is rotting and get in on some of that as well!

As for mercs... well some ppl love them and others will not grp with a merc in grp. One thing is for sure, mercs arent always reliable. I have died and seen others die with a healer merc in grp. Mercs seem to take a lunch break at the worst times! Also a tank merck if not set right can run off and attack and get the whole grp killed. Mercs are a tricky thing and not 100%. Also if you are tagged as the Puller, the healer merc wont heal you. Not sure why they made them that way but there it is. Supposedly when you tag a MT & MA the melee mercs will assist the MA once MA hits mob. Well I have seen mercs just stand there and do nothing more times than I can count. And its not because the merc is set to passive. My own mercs have done this.
All my toons own a merc BUT I always use hot keys to control my mercs. With my tank mercs I always set them to passive when someone is pulling and once a mob is engaged I set merc to assist. My rog merc is always set to assist unless I see it acting weird then I start using my hot keys. My cleric mercs are always set to reactive unless there is more than one in the grp.
Ive grp'd my wiz with my necro and 1 healer merc and 1 tank merc and they owned the zone. Ofcourse they are only in their mid 50's atm but still. My shmn w/ healer merc grps with my war w/ rog merc and they do pretty well also. They are 88 & 83 both with t5 mercs.
Dont count on a grp getting rid of their merc for you either in a grp. Sometimes the grp needs the merc because its the only healer in grp or many times they dont want to share the loot with others because they are boxing 3 toons w/mercs.

As for the usefulness of a merc at higher lvls well if the merc is t5 then it is great. I have seen t5 mercs be MT for grp and grp did very well if the merc was the higher lvl. I have grp'd with MT mercs and taken agro from them just because I was 3 lvls higher so my dots were doing more dmg than the merc.

So there it is... Smiley: clown
