I'm not sure how you expect them to compensate you besides extending your subscription? That offer sort of obviates your "being charged for services not rendered" screed.

It's disappointing, sure; but it's not like Blizzard hasn't been hacked too.

If they really had unencrypted credit card info sitting around, that's pretty shocking.

Speculate all you want. Your OPINION is meaningless. As is blizzard being hacked. Banks could care less.

I spoke with my bank this evening. I'm told I will have no problem getting all of my money back....Every penny and if there are incidental charges involved, I can get those back too. I don't even have to deal with Sony. I just issue the paperwork and get the refund. The bank deals with it from there, along with visa.

SOE can either provide their game continuously and securely, or I will be getting all of my money back, weather they like it or not. It's that simple.

The fact that they've been hacked falls under the category of "not my problem." Call your bank and dispute your cc charges before they get bankruptcy protection.

My only question at this point: When we find out our info was compromised, who do we see about the class action lawsuit?

Not sure you'd have any luck with a lawsuit. Was Sony dumb to have what amounted to an unencrypted - yet otherwise secured - PSN account database? Sure. But you'd have a hell of an uphill road to walk to prove they were negligent, much less willfully so.

No offense intended. I'm just remarking on the fact that I wouldn't see any such lawsuit having much of a chance of going anywhere, especially against a megacorp like Sony. Then again, I'm not a lawyer. I just watched Judge Wapner a lot as a kid.

Any law professors are free to tear my supposition to shreds.

hey just a heads up for anyone that was supposed to be billed on 5/2/2011 for your subscription, they were still able to bill you for it. pretty screwed up they cant get their servers secure but they are still willing to charge you for a subscription. it takes real cojones to still charge people for their subscriptions when the servers arent even active. im starting to remember why i left this game before. it may be time to move on again and this time never come back.

Calm down, folks. I was billed today also, but SOE has issued a press release saying that they will grant an extra 30 days to all EQ subscribers, in addition to the number of comp days for server downtime.

The only things to get excited about are:

1. Will the hackers send spam to your e-mail address?
2. Will they attempt to hijack player accounts to sell characters or platinum once the servers are back up?
3. If you're outside of the US, will they use your stolen banking information?
4. Do you share login/password combinations between SOE and any other online service?

Thanks for the heads up. I just nipped that little situation in the bud by cancelling my cc.

Called Sony first to give them an opportunity to stop my billing. They wouldn't, so I called my bank again. My bank said that even they are aware this issue and recommended I change cc numbers, first to stop this billing, and also because our info was possibly comprimised by Sony. My bank said this.

If you are too late for that, you can dispute your charges later.

Oh I don't know about that...

http://ingame.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2011/05/03/6577819-sony-declines-to-testify-before-congress-as-1-billion-lawsuit-filed

Even if ends up thrown out, settled outside of court, or whatever... the damage this kind of publicity does is likely more significant than the $ they are losing every day from simply being down.

It's interesting to see congress and all the state DA's jumping into the action. Politicians and lawyers swarm to money like a shark to blood. It's frenzy time.. unfortunately for Sony.

Personally, I like the games and the network and will be back for more (Thank ye sir, may I have another!).

There is a conspiracy theorist chance that Sony is actually using these downtimes with SOE and PSN as punishment against said hackers, as it can be assumed they use many of the same services

How does that punish the hackers? Interrupting Sony services and costing them millions of dollars was one of their goals. That's gotta be one of the, er, how do I say this without sounding harsh, ah, I got it. That has got to be one of the least logical conspiracy theories I've ever heard.

Sorry, punishment should have been in quotation marks. I agree, it would be a useless punishment and would only play into Anonymous plans. I used "conspiracy theorist chance" to denote how slim the chance was, not to say there was a conspiracy theory.

I think a better Conspiracy Theory is a way for sony to get out of some of their less profitable games...IE EQ

The database hacking and stealing of customer information has (almost certainly) nothing to do with Anonymous whatsoever. They take sites offline or vandalize sites or what not, but they've never engaged in something like actually stealing. Shutting down a Scientology site for a few days is one thing. Stealing credit card data is another, and totally out of character for the group. A) It's not related to any of their goals, B) they're smart enough to know whomever did this just brought the Wrath of God down on themselves by stealing that much.

Might as well have robbed a bank.

I'm not saying Anonymous isn't a big part of the reason why the PSN went down (even though they say it wasn't them, and that if any Anonymous members took it down they were acting indepedently), but the whole database hacking bit was likely not them.

End of May! Do you think there is any validity to this statement. Post your comments and if anyone with any contacts or better info can post here...would be most appreciated. I hope they are wrong.

You see though, that's the thing. Sony is the one that came out and said cc data was stolen. I have heard of no results of this stolen information, other than "it was stolen". Also, (I have heard, haven't looked into it) Anonymous claimed the attack at first until Sony stated that the cc info was stolen.

And this "crime" holds no bar to threatening the U.S. Military for the "inhumane treatment" of Bradley Manning, the private who leaked info to Wiki Leaks. Bank Robbery does not give the death penalty. Treason does.

Anonymous never claimed this attack, they claimed the DDoS attack at the beginning of April. This stems from the PSN breech in mid April. Two different attacks, two different groups.
