A couple weeks ago, Playstation network went down due to some hacker attack, and SOE took the PSN offline for over a week, saying they were taking the opportunity to upgrade the whole network.

I can only assume the down time today has something to do with that.

Nothing from SOE beyond the fact that they are down. I don't know if my information has been compromised or not and how long it will be down. I have other questions too, but I'll reserve them for when more information is available.

The rumor I have heard... and mind you its a rumor

Is that Sony's database was hacked and subscribers credit card info was leaked or stolen.
Something about a database being unencrypted.

Don't know how reliable that info is being that it is a rumor, but maybe there is some truth to it

Well it seems the EQ part of the company wasn't breached two weeks ago. And should of been address and fixed before they went on line.
If it is breached a second time. Sony's Bad, and should be held accountable.

I think that's what happened to the PlayStation Network. They've been down for 2 weeks.

Haven't seen anything about SOE. Could be as simple as they found a security flaw and are patching it or as serious as what you described. SOE has not been forthcoming with information, but unfortunately, that's typical.

Just read this 12:30 pm (pacific)
SOE MAINTENANCE In Progress

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Valued SOE Customers,
We have had to take the SOE service down temporarily. In the course of our investigation into the intrusion into our systems we have discovered an issue that warrants enough concern for us to take the service down effective immediately. We will provide an update later today (Monday).
We apologize for any inconvenience and greatly appreciate your patience.

I just wanted to comment on this real quickly by saying:

You gotta remember that SOE is a USA-based company, so their "work hours" on the Pacific Coast are when most of anything at all happens at their offices. Unfortunately for European and Australia customers, patch- and/or downtimes usually coincide with these customers' playtimes. But it's not because they hate you guys. It's because that's when the people are there to do their jobs.

I hope they can resolve this quickly so we can all get back to playing. As is, with no pertinent information forthcoming, it looks like we are all S.O.L. for a while.

i dont mind the downtime but what i do mind is no recompense
in two games i have had superb customer treatment

eq2. the Euro server was operated on a diff time base than the american ones. it was taken down at 2am til 10am european time so we always were asleep not losing prime time play
EQ has a euro server which i have been on 11 years kane bayle antonious bayle, which is alwasy treated same as usa servers, hence maybe 4 months lost time (time which we pay for) in excess or normal usa downtimes

Wow Blizzard always used to serverwide apology and instant re-imbursement of account free play time for ANY downtime outside of the weekly patch. in my year or so on WoW i maybe got accredited with 17 days free playtime due to emergency patches.

id like EQ sony to do the same but i knwo they never will,
any downtime should be given as free playtime beyond the announced weekly patch, with loyal euro customers getting all their lost days back

to us when the server comes down at our time 9am and doesnt coem back up online til 11pm means an effective waste of TWO days, whereas our usa cousins are uslaly online at noon to 3pm and reday for a full day play after work or college.

i understand its a usa game, but eq2 has done this and a little acknowleedgement by Sony to us would be nice

I as of 4:30 EST contacted my bank and they are aware of the Sony Issue. Sony indicated that no personal information of any kind has been retained by the hackers. All personal information incuding banking and credit card holders are not effected by this invasion.

I just wanted to say that as long as I have been playing (11yrs), SoE has never had any kind of sync between their live servers and their live web site. When servers are down for a PLANED maintenance their web site shows everything up. Just recently they ran a Marketplace special on their website, if you buy a cherry tree Friday to Sunday they will donated to the Red Cross in Japan’s disaster. Tree was up for about 5 hours and then off the Marketplace in game with no explanation. Sorry SoE but it is not hard to sync a website to what is happening in a 11 year old game. You would think you would have your S_ _ _ together by now. And while I am at it your marketing department is the Lamest in the industry. I do enjoy the game, the players and the content, hats off there. But the game has lasted as long as it has because of your loyal customers, NOT because of your talented marketing dept.

As previously announced, we have been conducting an ongoing, thorough investigation stemming from the cyber attack in April and promised to notify you should there be any changes to the situation.

We issued a press release today outlining these details. We will promptly send a customer service notification via email to all of our impacted account holders whose customer data may have been stolen as a result of an illegal intrusion on our systems. This information was discovered less than 24 hours ago and in response, we took down our services until we could verify their security.

SOE is committed to delivering secure, stable and entertaining games for players of all ages and we're working around the clock to ensure this situation is resolved as quickly as possible. We deeply regret the inconvenience this has caused and appreciate your continued patience and feedback.

Sincerely,
Sony Online Entertainment

Customer Service Notification
May 2, 2011

Dear Valued Sony Online Entertainment Customer:
Our ongoing investigation of illegal intrusions into Sony Online Entertainment systems has discovered that hackers may have obtained personal customer information from SOE systems. We are today advising you that the personal information you provided us in connection with your SOE account may have been stolen in a cyber-attack. Stolen information includes, to the extent you provided it to us, the following: name, address (city, state, zip, country), email address, gender, birthdate, phone number, login name and hashed password.

Customers outside the United States should be advised that we further discovered evidence that information from an outdated database from 2007 containing approximately 12,700 non-US customer credit or debit card numbers and expiration dates (but not credit card security codes) and about 10,700 direct debit records listing bank account numbers of certain customers in Germany, Austria, Netherlands and Spain may have also been obtained - we will be notifying each of those customers promptly.

There is no evidence that our main credit card database was compromised. It is in a completely separate and secured environment.

We had previously believed that SOE customer data had not been obtained in the cyber-attacks on the company, but on May 1st we concluded that SOE account information may have been stolen and we are notifying you as soon as possible.

We apologize for the inconvenience caused by the attack and as a result, we have:

1) Temporarily turned off all SOE game services;

2) Engaged an outside, recognized security firm to conduct a full and complete investigation into what happened; and

3) Quickly taken steps to enhance security and strengthen our network infrastructure to provide you with greater protection of your personal information.

We greatly appreciate your patience, understanding and goodwill as we do whatever it takes to resolve these issues as quickly and efficiently as practicable.

For your security, we encourage you to be especially aware of email, telephone, and postal mail scams that ask for personal or sensitive information. Sony will not contact you in any way, including by email, asking for your credit card number, social security number or other personally identifiable information. If you are asked for this information, you can be confident Sony is not the entity asking. When SOE's services are fully restored, we strongly recommend that you log on and change your password. Additionally, if you use your Station or SOE game account name or password for other unrelated services or accounts, we strongly recommend that you change them, as well.

To protect against possible identity theft or other financial loss, we encourage you to remain vigilant, to review your account statements and to monitor your credit reports. We are providing the following information for those who wish to consider it:

U.S. residents are entitled under U.S. law to one free credit report annually from each of the three major credit bureaus. To order your free credit report, visit www.annualcreditreport.com or call toll-free (877) 322-8228.

We have also provided names and contact information for the three major U.S. credit bureaus below. At no charge, U.S. residents can have these credit bureaus place a "fraud alert" on your file that alerts creditors to take additional steps to verify your identity prior to granting credit in your name. This service can make it more difficult for someone to get credit in your name. Note, however, that because it tells creditors to follow certain procedures to protect you, it also may delay your ability to obtain credit while the agency verifies your identity. As soon as one credit bureau confirms your fraud alert, the others are notified to place fraud alerts on your file. Should you wish to place a fraud alert, or should you have any questions regarding your credit report, please contact any one of the agencies listed below.

Experian: 888-397-3742; www.experian.com; P.O. Box 9532, Allen, TX 75013
Equifax: 800-525-6285; www.equifax.com; P.O. Box 740241, Atlanta, GA 30374-0241
TransUnion: 800-680-7289; www.transunion.com; Fraud Victim Assistance Division, P.O. Box 6790, Fullerton, CA 92834-6790

You may wish to visit the web site of the U.S. Federal Trade Commission at www.consumer.gov/idtheft or reach the FTC at 1-877-382-4357 or 600 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, Washington, DC 20580 for further information about how to protect yourself from identity theft. Your state Attorney General may also have advice on preventing identity theft, and you should report instances of known or suspected identity theft to law enforcement, your State Attorney General, and the FTC. For North Carolina residents, the Attorney General can be contacted at 9001 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, NC 27699-9001; telephone (877) 566-7226; or www.ncdoj.gov. For Maryland residents, the Attorney General can be contacted at 200 St. Paul Place, 16th Floor, Baltimore, MD 21202; telephone: (888) 743-0023; or www.oag.state.md.us.

We are committed to helping our customers protect their personal data and we will provide a complimentary offering to assist users in enrolling in identity theft protection services and/or similar programs. The implementation will be at a local level and further details will be made available shortly in regions in which such programs are commonly utilized.

We thank you for your patience as we complete our investigation of this incident, and we regret any inconvenience. Our teams are working around the clock on this, and services will be restored as soon as possible. Sony takes information protection very seriously and will continue to work to ensure that additional measures are taken to protect personally identifiable information. Providing quality and secure entertainment services to our customers is our utmost priority. Please contact us at 1 (866) 436-6698 should you have any additional questions.
Sincerely,

Sony Online Entertainment LLC

I just recently invested over $100 in software and subscriptions to come back and play Everquest and less than two weeks later this happens. The PSN has been down for two weeks now with no ETA on when it will be back up. Being paying customers, I hope that the MMO side of the house will not have to deal with the same "it will come back when it comes back" issue that Playstation 3 owners are dealing with.

Seriously, I'm starting to get pissed off. They took away my PSN, fine. Then they took away my Netflix. Not cool. Now starting today,I was going to enjoy my 3 days off of work by FINALLY being able to grind on some lvls. And now this ****. Figured that being a billion dollar coporation, you would've been able to fix yourselves in less time it took to get hacked. Guess I was wrong.

I've been back for 3 weeks. We're in the same boat.

Double XP for Saturday was a "Please don't hate Sony" move. They're going to have to do a little better than that this time. How about a stack of Shared Bottle of Adventure potions? It's not our fault they didn't protect our information. And we're paying for a service that is not being provided.

I also have just returned after a few yrs away and this is not what i want to see.As long as my CC info was not compromised i have no worries with soe.

on a side note the double exp day Saturday was nice for the hassle last week but believe more is in order.(Hint)i am still without a mount of any kind.Bad luck with the LoN stuff.

Here is some info on how they are going to compensate us
Quote:
e personal information of the approximately 24.6 million SOE accounts that was illegally obtained, to the extent it had been provided to SOE, is as follows:

name
address
e-mail address
birthdate
gender
phone number
login name
hashed password.
In addition to the information above, the 10,700 direct debit records from accounts in Austria, Germany, Netherlands and Spain, include:

bank account number
customer name
account name
customer address.
SOE will grant customers 30 days of additional time on their subscriptions, in addition to compensating them one day for each day the system is down. It is also in the process of outlining a "make good" plan for its PlayStation®3 MMOs (DC Universe Online and Free Realms). More information will be released this week.

now let see how long it takes before we get this

Same here. 100 bucks in expansions and another 70+ in subs forage that hasn't been live for a continuous 72 hours since.

Obviously, SOE is even more incompetent than ever, don't know why I expected that to change in my absence. I don't care about free time. I'm getting my money back and finding a game that wants my business weather they want to give it to me or not. Being charged for services not rendered is exactly why banks allow customers to dispute credit card charges, which I plan to do tomorrow.

I'm not sure how you expect them to compensate you besides extending your subscription? That offer sort of obviates your "being charged for services not rendered" screed.

It's disappointing, sure; but it's not like Blizzard hasn't been hacked too.

If they really had unencrypted credit card info sitting around, that's pretty shocking.

A group named Anonymous was enraged over the legal actions sony took over "fellow hackers" for posting how to jailbreak a Playstation 3. They broke into the website, but have denied all claims that they stole any information. Apparently it was just a warning; I am not sure on the details. There is a conspiracy theorist chance that Sony is actually using these downtimes with SOE and PSN as punishment against said hackers, as it can be assumed they use many of the same services. There is much information online about the whole Anonymous vs. Sony deal, just do a Google search. If you do that and read all of it you will know more than me, as I just know this stuff from word of mouth.

Yeah, no. Anonymous may be the hackers (though I doubt it, personally); but no business would shut down for two weeks to punish customers. They're losing millions of dollars, right now, every day.
