Vula'Aerr: calling PuristsFollow

hello everyone.

i have read with dismay and anger dozens of posts from veterans who feel just like i do about the (in our opinion) appalling decision to include luclin noobie armour quests and keep the resulting gear in game.

the 3 last weeks were superb, a challenge, scraping for everything, even refusing to play mages, going for rogue, paladin, ranger etc amazing groups and loyal well mannered friends, some new, some who came back like me just to play (near) classic and we rememered each other from years ago on KB or AB or Stromm. A good feeling.

I'lI'm posting here guild recruit to see if i can get 30 ppl who are purists and hold true and never give up the quest or their ethics, Guild aim will be to stick to ourselves, not judge others , just do things our way as it was before Sony came stomping in with their size 12 clown boots, wrecking everything.

If we can get enough people and people are welcome to retart with us or come over from Fippy then maybe as a team of companions who have high morals ideals and tremendous patience and willpower we can still hold on to The Dream.

Guild Rules be:

1. no members with noobie armour from luclin or any other unvoted for sony 'additions' 'surprises'

2. no drama on server, let people play how they wish, but we are very clear about who we are and what we are doing. Respect others and hope they respect us and not start a flame war.

3. decent fantasy genre names, no silly nonsensical non-genre specific tosh

4. members must be fine with being right clicked and also prepared to right click others and invite/boot accordingly.

Plz post here if you think we can do this.

No other posters plz or flamers, this is serious to us.

If i don't get enough people then i'll leave quietly and without drama. deeply saddened.

Meliannia Dawnrider

Lawful Good High Elf Paladin.

Melianna Dawnstorm

Neutral Good Wood Elf Druid

There are no grey areas. Obey The Rules.

Help me out Mellindaria, are you talking about the newb armor quests like this ? I ask because era of this gear technically varies greatly as it was implemented piecemeal for the various races/classes. I don't think any of it was pre-luclin being live though.

Edit: So an erudite necro on the Time-locked progression can get the quest container and patterns but cannot do the combines. You get the "fail to meet the requirements" message that you got with research before the last patch fixed that. However, people in guild were saying halflings were able to do the combines (I can't confirm this as I only kill halflings). I was able to get all the quest components collected in an evening as a level 22... took my dark elf cleric weeks back when he was in his 30s pre-LDoN doing it. So I remain confused as to what is intended here as far as these quests being on TLP.

------
As far as your guild idea, I think it can work. Depending on how votes to unlock content go you could find yourself with a lot more almost-like minded people anyways.

I probably couldn't live up to it just because (to my understanding) the erudite necro newb armor isn't a hooded robe graphic... that is almost an unresistable temptation in itself.

I've had to do some digging to really get a handle on what armor specifically you are posting about. Having to go to the O-boards is a drag, but at least that confirmed for me that it is the home-city newb armor quests that were added later in the game. That they weren't on TLP to start, and were added silently (but not completely) with the last patch to all servers. This suggests someone screwed up, and now they are deciding what ticks off the least people.

Erudite newb chest piece quest list (allows you to get to the rest of pieces easily through alla's links).

Necromancer Robe --quests appear broken
Shadowknight Chest --no report
Cleric Chest (evil) --no report
Paladin Chest --no report
Cleric Chest (good) --no report
Mage, Wizard, Enchanter --no report

Basically you can look up quests in your home city and find your newb quest.

I thought about listing them all... but this Official board link shows that tons of the quests aren't working. Since communtity relations Dev started the thread I suppose the decision to keep the newb quests active and fix the implementation has been made.

The slope is slippery... as this means either moving some warrens mobs into Toxx or opening the Warrens early (or shafting the erudites of some classes) for the newb weapons at least. I didn't take the time to see if any of the non-necromancer erudite armor pieces needed Warrens drops, nor did anyone in zone last night tell me they were succeeding in making the armors.

The armor shouldn't have gone in before Sol Ro temple stuff... true.

The armor is way better than true classic 1-30 (even 50 in some slots for non raiders)... true, but it's still not that good.

If you are wearing a full set at level 50 then you don't understand AC caps and classic content anyways... or you just like the style!

If you are wearing this stuff post 40 once Kunark has been open a few weeks... (remember, the purists aren't going to wear it at all)

Obviously I am in the "well it's kind of dumb but I can live with it" camp on TL progression.

The inclusion of "newbie" armors and weapons might not seem like much of an issue to some but consider this:

The newbie Ranger sword from Gfay

Faydark Champions Long Sword
MAGIC ITEM LORE ITEM NO TRADE PLACEABLE
Slot: PRIMARY SECONDARY
Skill: 1H Slashing Atk Delay: 27
DMG: 9 Dmg Bonus: 21
This item is placeable in yards and houses.
STR: +3 DEX: +5 HP: +10 MANA: +5
SV FIRE: +5 SV COLD: +5
Recommended level of 10.
WT: 1.0 Size: MEDIUM
Class: RNG
Race: ELF HEF
Slot 1, Type 4 (Weapon: General)

compared to

Short Sword of the Ykesha
MAGIC ITEM PLACEABLE
Slot: PRIMARY SECONDARY
Skill: 1H Slashing Atk Delay: 24
DMG: 8 Dmg Bonus: 21
This item can be used in tradeskills.
This item is placeable in yards and houses.
Effect: Ykesha (Combat, Casting Time: Instant) at Level 37
WT: 4.5 Size: MEDIUM
Class: WAR PAL RNG SHD BRD ROG
Race: ALL
Slot 1, Type 4 (Weapon: General)

My point?
The newbie sword is so easy to get and in some ways better than the SSoY. The SSoY takes teamwork and
skill to retrieve. Making these quests available hurts the EQ community on the TLP servers.
This is just one example.
I could say the same thing about the fact that they left the melee augmentation merchants in on the server.
Why bother making a progression server if its not really going to be a progression.
This is supposed to be a progression server.
I wish they would fix that dumb Ghoul Assassin

The argument against the newbie weapons is much stronger (than the armor).

However, SOE has made their decision. A lot of the arguments against their decision take the "this is a classic server" tact... but its a progression server, currently in a modern version of the original era EQ. It's not classic era EQ... (thankfully, I won't play looking at my spell book to med thank you)... so there is going to be compromises in authenticity vs. smoothing out the progression to be fun for the greatest number of players.

Really sitting back from it... the armor decision harms the "selling crafted to lowbies" market. Top-end classic crafted is still better for AC in most slots and therefore better for most classes. That market still exists.

When blue diamond crafted armor comes in the crafters will make a killing. I always loved that armor too... great looks (dark elf casters got to be in chain appearance! brilliant.). That's not that far away in progression.

The newbie armor can take a little time (4 hours to collect all the mats as an Erudite Nec.) or a ton of time (if you are any of the race/class combos that need a goofy drop off a rare lowbie mob). Some will choose to bypass newb armor for this reason.

Others won't bother with it because "twink" gear is starting to be offered for sale in commons... prices for all but the most desirable pieces (i.e., stuff you still want to wear 40+) are going to start coming down.

Casters will be removing newb armor pieces for stuff with more appropriate stats and/or effects on it. Caster itemization is generally lousy even into Velious.

The weapons are strong for the era... but most melee want more than one weapon type. So really it gives you a decent weapon to low-level with if you don't have access to a range of weapons suited to your class. Beyond level 40 there's certainly a lot of options for weapon variety. Thanks to player knowledge and helping each other many will have the newb weapon much earlier than was originally possible in many cases. The weapon quest is usually the hardest list of tasks to accomplish (usally highest level mobs and rarer spawns).

The newb weapons compared to level 12's walking around with Blackened Alloy ******* Swords is far less jarring in my mind. Most of the stats on the newb weapons don't mean that much in this era anyhow. People counting stats are going to max/min with other pieces in nearly every slot (including weapon) over the newb stuff.

Sure, the weapons are good now. The true overall impact is that the slow casuals, play-lots casuals, solers, semi-raiders and raiders won't have a huge disparity in gear for a while. The heavy raiders are going to farm out hate and fear and have that edge (which heavy farming raid content earns them) but it won't be until Velious that the gap can really widen because the "raid" gear gets so much better.

This actually could help make the server want to sit on Velious longer. The eventual trickle-down of "twink" gear in Velious (especially if we sit on the expac longer) will make the newb quested issue moot.

Well, I wouldn't mind joining the guild, but I have already started Seekers of Stars. Oh and I don't think my ranger Jonwain would pass your naming test.

If you want to play in a no drama guild send me a tell in game, I play mostly at night Eastern time.

I think 50% being able to get is a high estimate.

Looks like you edited the rules. I think this version is much better. Was curious as to how you were going to enforce the no grouping with anyone who's done the newbie armor rule.

Good luck.

To make this whole issue even more farcical the quests don't work for all races/classes which speaks to me that little concious thought and effort was put into it.

The Golden Age don't use the newbie items but they group with people who do. Its their personal choice not to do those quests.
People can make up their own minds about the quests but I for one won't be doing them. I came to progress on a progression server. Not to cave in and start using all the gadgets and gizmos to make it easier. If people are having a hard time they need to break down the barriers and change their attitudes and work together to get things done. That is what made/makes EQ great to begin with.
Notice I never did call it a classic server.

And since rangers are able to gather dex with reasonable ease... proccing weapons work well for them (situational aggro issues aside).

Last time I played a ranger on a regular server to 51 he had a 10-slot bank full of weapons (this was after skilling up) to play different situations --mostly different procs. Not many of them were better than the newb sword dramatically as far as basic ratio, and some of them had minimal stats

Myself and others have already said enough but just to throw another thing out there
that was possibly not considered is that the introduction of the newbie quests help squash a
newly forming tradeskill economy on the server.
This is just one example: Why bother with skilling up and making banded mail now when pretty much nobody is going to want or need it when they finally get all their newbie armors done?
Sure the non-visible slots need the AC or banded but consider how much of the market for such goods has been
wiped out now.
Not real important to some in the long run I suppose but as I've said before it works to undermine the community on this fledgling server

Glad to hear it's going well.

I may not belong to your camp, but I do share some of the ideals. I think there is room for all sorts of "niche" guilds on TLP. I can even tolerate the "powergamer blitz content" niche group as long as they can deal with the fact that the vote-unlocks may progress way slower than they would prefer.

The first guild I belonged to in EQ (regular server years ago) was an evil-only roleplay encouraged family-style guild... can't get much narrower than that without doing full race/deity restricted. Was a blast, and one of the few things I truly miss from "back then". Downfall of that guild turned out to be the decision to let "goods" in.

Don't send tells to me (not that anyone has) regarding this guild. I left them abruptly and burned
my bridges in the process.

I support the cause, I just no longer wish to champion it at this time.
I am still irritated about the issue of Newbie armors therefore I personally will not do or use them
