That's always useful advice but I sure do share their frustration over a key class spell being unavailable simply because Sony can't get the research trade to work right. Some spells are crucially important to a class's advancement. I would having the highest level necro pet is one of those.
I share the frustration as well, but it's not game-breaking --at least no specific example that has been cited. Necro pets is the best I can come up with (for being a serious problem), and hopefully it is addressed sooner rather than later. Ulitmately it is playstyle limiting (pet can't tank as well being lower con) and reduces dps when kiting but it doesn't tip me to stop playing my necro (yet at least).
Unfortunately (and part of why this happened in the first place) is the Dev insistence on not progressing tradeskills down. There really isn't a market for the lowbie research spells on old servers, nor is doing research on a brand-new main character efficient. So on an old server make friends with a researcher is what most people tell you to do...
If a spell "has to be" researched and non-vendor available under level 50 (or even 75?)then it would be nice to offer a non-tradeskill route to the spells. Similar to the Kunark spell turn in quests. Frankly, I think all spells should be (eventually) vendor available somewhere, just make the vendor cost a gold-sink in proportion to tradeskilling. Or put them all on LDON merchants... or some even smarter idea... I do recognize that keeping failures in the tradeskilling system makes determining absolute trade-item costs tricky.
I can see newer content having drop-only and research-only spells. I am unconvinced there is any benefit for any spell under level 80 to not have multiple routes of acquistion.
EQ tradeskills don't appeal to all. When it doesn't work (ala progression research) then the problem is clearly amplified.
As to the old argument "but tradeskills are vital and special"... well then put in duplicates of spells but add vanity features. Example: make the research-only version of the necro pets be bizarre critters... or zombie gnomes or something that makes it stand out from my vendor-bought plain version.
