Random Friday: If you were to roll three standard 6-sided dice, what are the odds of each of them coming up with the same number?
A. 1 in 18
B. 1 in 36
C. 1 in 72
D. 1 in 216

You had the answer as B 1 in 36

Tell me if i am wrong but the first dice roll Does matter as there are still 6 possibilities for the roll that the second does has to match. So the true answer would be D 1 in 216. Here is also a web addy that says the same thing and a chart http://homepage.ntlworld.com/dice-play/OddsTables.htm

Rolling Dice at the same time (not one after another):

1 dice = 6 possibilities.

2 dice at the same time = 6 + 5 + 4 + 3 + 2 + 1 possibilies (21).

3 dice at the same time = 6 + 5 + 4 + 3 + 2 + 1 + 5 + 4 + 3 + 2 + 1 + 4 + 3 + 2 + 1 + 3 + 2 + 1 + 2 + 1 + 1 possibilities (56).

But... some occur more than once in the set (1-2-1, 2-1-1, 1-1-2 are all the same result when order doesn't matter so the odds of getting a certain mixed result are higher).

There's only 6 triple rolls though. For what the situation wants, we need all the total combos, not the unique combos. 6 x 6 x 6 = 216.

So yes, at least to my reckoning, you would have a 1/216 chance for a specific triple.

1 in 36 chance for any triple.
