Turning off The Welcome Screen???Follow

#1 Jul 25 2010 at 11:58 AM Rating: Decent
Is there a way to turn off the Welcome screen that pops up when you log on?
I really liked it before when it wasn't working but now it is back and it is a pain in $%&.

None that I know of, but on most toons, I simply shrink it down to a small box, so it isn't taking up the whole screen, and hit escape as soon as I get a toon logged in.

Ok, I played with the INI files a bit, and if you do the following, it will keep it from popping up, at least atm:

character_server.INI
under [Startup] heading put in the line:
Show=0

UI_character_server.INI
at the bottom of the [WebManager] section, add:
Show=0

at the bottom of the [HtmlWnd] section, add:
Show=0

You may not need all 3 of those, but I didn't spend any time to figure out which is which. Most likely you don't need the character_server.INI change.

EDIT: After a bit more testing, just need the Show=0 under [HtmlWnd section.

EDIT: Ok, some more testing, and it has to do with the character_server.INI file WelcomeTimetamp value in the [Startup] section. Doesn't look like you can keep this modified, so my original statement, was correct, no way to do it, at least not easily. Will try a few more things, but unlikely they will work.

EDIT: I never got around to testing the server-side thing out before the patch, and doubt I will since it's 22hr wait now. Still probably fairly safe to assume it's only in the local INI file though.

You can disable that pesky HTML-encrusted-resource-hogging window by adding this to your character INI file:

[Startup]
WelcomeTimestamp=1262260800

For good measure, I stuck it in my eqclient.ini file too.

The Timestamp value is UNIX time, for what it's worth (the number of seconds since 1/1/1970). That line above is for the 31st December this year. Stick that in there and I'd hope by then there'll be an option to turn it off!

Shaggio says: If you know anything about UNIX time you can set the time stamp to a later date in the future (like Dec 21 2012), so you can make sure it stays away until the end of the world.

A guildie of mine also mentioned that you need to add that at the top of the files rather than the bottom. He said it didn't work at the bottom.

Personally, I don't really care about it. I just close it at the same time I'm closing the alarm window.

Doesn't work. Thanks for looking it up though, I wasn't sure if it was what was originally used or not. I've tried several time stamps variations, newer and older, both get reset. The only way to get rid it of for sure, is to have an app, check the current time, convert it to Unix, 1-5 mins earlier (maybe upto 30) than the current time, and place it in there before the log in. And then, I'm not even positive, it's not also kept on the server-side as well for comparision. But I will test it out, I just didn't want to have to wait 30+ minutes each time, in case, it was synced to the server-side. Resetting it a few minutes, and immediately relogging back in, does keep it from popping up though.

EDIT: And it is unlikely, it's synced with the server, as erroneous time stamps, and one of significantly different times, bring it up after immediate relogs, but don't if you leave it alone, or use very short time difference ones.

This was changed on the last big UI change patch. As I had heard of others turning it off, but didn't real care myself. But, since I knew the old way didn't work any more, I thought I'd see what could be done. I didn't figure it any of it out, until today, when I started working on it. I had only heard it was an INI setting to get rid of it, the old way.

It's actually kinda of nice to see friends on other servers pop up on the welcome screen, when you play on multiple servers, so you're not spending 10+ minutes trying to remember all their alts names to see if and what toon they're on.

Anyway, next few times I log in, after 30+ minutes, if I remember, I'll try resetting it a few minutes off the current time, just to be sure, it's not duplicated on the server-side.

I just now tried logging in. The servers are current locked, but from what I got on the patch the welcome screen will only display if you have not been in that account for more than 22 hours.

EDIT: Actual message is: "The Welcome Screen now displays only if it hasn't been seen by any character on the current account in the past 22 hours".

Yther is still pretty awesome, though.Smiley: nod

It's prob 22hrs from the last time it came up, as I've had it come up in less than an hour of being logged out, unless that was part of today's patch. And even that seems a bit long, but I couldn't say for sure, just seems like it comes up more often than that.

EDIT: It was in the patch, and is much less frequent now. I didn't mind it too much, but when you were logging many toons in and out, it got annoying. Otherwise, it doesn't bother me.

If it didn't say, in-game it said 4am PDT expected downtime of 5hrs, so probably a little more than 1.5hrs left, from this posting time.

For what its worth:

They supposedly changed it to 22 hours per account. However, I believe it is per computer. For the boxers out there such as myself. Load up one instance. Close out the page, camp, and all that jazz to free up your resources. Now log in on all your accounts. Look! No Pop Up!

Unfortunately, its not as good as none, but still a relief for some multiboxers.
