Why are they not Merging Servers?Follow

If the server populations are so bad why are they not doing server merges?

I hardly see anyone on. Am wondering if coming back to game after 3 years away is worth it.

Seems they no longer care about the UI either, lots of newer games have great UI Features that EQ could of added to this game, but they just do not seem to care anymore. Why make Underfoot and not add some of these changes.

I just expected to see some great changes to the game after being gone for 3 years and they done nothing at all, very disappointing.

Because they sell server transfers now. You are more likely to see a chance to move your character with a discount to avoid having it deleted than getting a free transfer with their current mentality. If it can't be turned into a micro-transaction, it probably isn't being considered by management.

UI changes don't happen at the drop of a hat. They take time to do correctly and sometimes need code support. They do improve things bit by bit as time allows though.

The UI is one of the pieces that I think desperately needs to be totally revamped (along with PC models and the quest journal/system.)

I suspect it is because the very loud and vocal minority top tier guilds don't want to directly compete with each other on the same servers.

The group game as we all knew it is gone. It is all about the raiding now and top tier guilds do not need server merges to keep their ranks, they can poach from mid tier guilds. It works in the short term but once the mid tier guilds are defunked by all the poaching, there will only be two options.

A. Lower the number of players requirement from 54 to something smaller.

B. Server merges

But as I stated above each server already has their pool of poachable guilds which are being poached by that servers top guilds. So there is no gain to merge servers.

The correct answer is option A.

I think you answered your own question on the UI. EQ is very old now as is FFXI, both Sony games. I came back a while ago and am just a very casual player but I missed EQ.

I haven't a clue how an online game(s) such as EQ, FFXI die. I would assume it would be when the subscriptions cannot cover staff and upgrading and maintenance of equipment.

Am still exploring the new areas and the old ones. Was a bit of a shock when I came back, places that were soooo crowded when I left are empty. I was in a merge from MR to Povar, it went well and tons of people, a few years ago.

Also, there is little general chatter now. No one chats.

Didn't know EQ was mostly raiding these days. Oh well, don't mind it once in a while but not on a daily basis.

If merging would keep EQ alive then am all for it and the top raiding guilds can fight for their spot or recruit guildies as they do in every other game.

Expansions can't please everyone.

most highend raiding activity is already concentrated on a couple servers anyway. Antonius has something like nine tower+ guilds, there are tons of servers with only one. From talking with people in guilds on servers with a low concentration of highend raiding.. most of them wish that there servers had more highend guilds.

Most of the really highend guilds (e.g., triality) are on servers that have other similarly ranked guilds. They aren't directly competing with each other anyway, because everything is instanced. (And in terms of recruit pools, since a transfer is $25, guilds compete on recruits with guilds not on their servers anyway.)

I ran into some magnificent naivety in game last night.

There was the usual "heads I win, tails you lose" anti-WoW stuff going on in General.

Then someone remarks that there might be another couple of expansions for EQ then "it will go ftp". The idea that SOE would just donate the server space and running costs beggars belief.

The way I see it they will keep merging while it can be made to pay and then they will have some very hard choices:-

  • Increase subscription to cover the costs from a diminishing player base. Like any minority you have to pay extra for your special requirements.
  • Go ftp and introduce some form of micro-transaction like other supposedly "free" games (eg PWI) which will pay for it
  • Pull the plug.

  • I have seen MMOs die.
I played Tabula Rasa for a while and then one day got a mail saying I had a free entry to the Aion beta to compensate for it TR closing down.
Planetside is down to a final server. But SOE have assured the player base that it "isn't going anywhere". I wonder if they realise how ambiguous that phrase is?

Maybe that will be how EQ will eventually be. One server staggering on ?

It will be an incredibly sad day for me and I suspect a lot of other people. It isn't the same game that we remember though. Some things remain (handins only in single items grrrrr!) but other aspects have changed beyond recognition.

For now I'm back and enjoying it. Long may it last.

Since Sony hasn't cracked down on plat farming/selling, and they refuse to merge servers, more and more people are flocking to the private Emu servers. I have watched Emu grow signifigantly in the last year due to Sony dropping the ball.
