Duoing 2 MagesFollow

#1 Feb 22 2010 at 10:54 PM Rating: Decent
i recently started boxing 2 mages together, and was wondering if anyone had experience with it.. should i use 2 cler mercs, or a cler and a war.. and.. should i use 2 air pets for stuns / mitigation, or water for DPs (backstab+DD?) and, should i go pet DPS AAs for both mages, or go def for one and dps for the other and let one tank.. (in which case an air pet to tank and a water pet to dps behind mob? (or air for more stuns?)

so far, ive just been using cler/war mercs and 2 air pets and getting my burnable AAs first, havent really gotten many pet specifics just yet but am planning to once i figure out what route i wanna take..

duoing 2mages is total pownage, just wanting to optimize it. thanks for the help.

I would be using 1 healer and one warrior merc. I would use 2 different type pets I wouldn't be using air pet until past level 50. All this with the understanding that I haven't played a mage past 25 and was not impressed with the air pet hp or stun effect.

I have not duo'd mages, but my comments are based on my merc observations and merc behavior.

Since you mentioed AA, you are past the level that merc tanks rule. In case others read this and start out fresh, merc tanks from level 1 to 50 are nearly indestructible. If you are duoing then at the low levels, just get two merc tanks and keep them fed with new mobs.

Back to your situation...

I would start off with a merc tank and a merc healer. The tank has better aggro generation tools than your pet. This means that the mages would be able to nuke more often.

As you accumulate more AA and you spend them on the various pet AA, your pet will reach a level that it will tank better than the merc tank. At that point, I'd ditch the merc tank for another healer merc. Actually, I would only use one healer most of the time and only add the second one for tougher fights.

As you are accumlating AA, I would focus one mage to have the defensive pet and the other one to have the offensive pet. Once you get enough AA, both pets will be the same, but as you are getting those AA, it might be more efficient to "specialize" the pets.

Get a pet focus item and an air pet will far outlast a tank merc. I'd use two air pets for the stuns and hp regen. Water pets are a lot more squishy for their added DPS and if you have two mages then their shouldn't be a DPS problem to begin with. I'd use two air pets and two cleric mercs and you'll be amazing what you can do... but get pet focii for both toons. AAs are important too, of course, and with the rapid rate you can earn them you shouldn't have too much trouble making your pet something decent very fast.

Good luck.

While I've never box'd 2 mage's together I do have an 85 Mage and I would recommend going 2 cleric merc's (if you ever need 2 at all) instead of tank.

Some will say to get ALL your pet AA's first, but for me it seemed to be a minimal upgrade past 10 on the main pet AA's, so I'd go up to 10 or 11 and then focus on spell AA's for a while.

Definitely get the best focus you can as that will be your biggest power boost regardless of AA's.

The Air pet on both Mages will be your best bet as well. That 81 pet is a monster and 2 of them throwing out flurries and stuns would be nasty.

I'm been away for a long while but agree, Air pet is the way to go. The only time I soloed with Water pet was in real tight pull location when only just keeping up mana wise with pops when a mob walking away could cause bad situation. Then the Water pet's quick kill with bs was nice but otherwise Air.

Remember,2 Air pets can stun mob 200% better than one Air.When fighting EXP mob,I would use 2 Air most of the time unless they are really really weak then I might consider using Air/Water or Air/Fire.

And someone already point it out, tank merc doesnt do you any good at higher level.Healer merc all the way imo.Only use one when exp grinding, pop the other when dealing with Named.

About the AA,I would say follow the AA guide on mage forum. You need some essential AA lines before touching pet AA.And DD related AA should be prior than pet offensive/defensive(but building one chars for pet AA is not bad I guess.Better pet tanking and longer RS pet duration.)

And if you are 81+,do whatever it need,bribe/threat/cry to ask people to help you to get those group pet focus in UF.These items need a raid to attain in SOD and they make a really really huge difference(mainly Defense part).
