Looking on my charactor on Sony's Station account. Regarding DPS (I am a Ranger) am I trying to get the highest number or lowest? Was confused looking at other players and there DPS was a higher number but weapon was slower? Rated 29th on server my dps is at 19.8 with a Sergeant's Longsword.
Where as the #1 on server is using a Deepscar Painsmasher with a DPS 28.5.
I guess what I am asking is that stat the speed of the weapon or the average damage per second. Do I want a lower DPS or Higher?

I wouldn't use those numbers on EQ players to determine your DPS. The only real way to determine it is to use a parsing program which reads your combat logs.

To answer your general question higher DPS is better. A fairly good way to compare weapons is tou use the ratio of damage to delay, the higher the ratio, the better it will be.

So your weapon at 33dam/20 delay would have a ratio of 1.65
The deepscar painsmasher 57dam/24 delay has a ratio of 2.375

The second weapon will produce a lot more DPS
