Poll: Should Mercs Be upgraded?Follow

#27 Feb 22 2010 at 10:40 PM Rating: Decent
maybe give mercs a few basic slots to "further equip" them, similar to what the mercs had in Diablo 2

The only things they need to do with Mercs are, 1) allow buffs to be blocked on Mercs (a compromise since they can only handle 15 buffs) and B) allow the owner to see their basic stats when you click "Info". Nothing fancy needed, just SOME detail so we don't have to waste time guessing or parsing their deaths.

its enough for statistics.

it is reasonable to know that if everyone in the game voted on this right now the outcome would be very much the same..

I personally think a couple more tiers of mercs could be added to UF. These would be obtained through your own personal completion of a particular progression arc, similar to SoD mercs. Complete the progression tasks in the tier 6 zones and you have access to a tier 6 merc, then later on when you complete the tier 8 progression tasks, you may purchase a tier 8 type merc. By obtaining mercs in this fashion you are obtaining access to a merc that is similar to playing with a real toon who has generally evolved through progression, completing a lower tier of progression and gear up in that tier is supposed to give you some new gear and AA exp that allows you to move on to the next tier.

For those of you who say you spend a lot of time lfg, I see your pain. I am a fortunate individual who can sometimes log on while at work, I work night shift 14 nights a month. Because of this I see the populations and difficulty finding groups during morning, afternoon and late night play times.

Mercs are not game breaking. Real people at the keyboard make mistakes, so does the coding that mercs are designed on. Learning to play the game with a merc healer/tank is not a lot different than joining a pick up group, when you can get one. The major difference is that when you use a merc and pay attention, you learn some of the flaws that merc coding possesses. Mercs have allowed people to go back and complete tasks or obtain items that they have wanted from past expansions but due to peoples desire to move "into the future" these few people were left with a void in how am I going to get this done now.

i voted yes, but not with the DPS nor with healing strength...

but more to help with the merc's ability to take hits... better defenses and hit points/mitigation...

i've heard and once seen a mage (loaded on AA's and pet focus) with a fully decked out pet tank in some of underfoot tier 6's and 7's... not just on regulars but also nameds... with cleric merc and druid/shammy support... now i'd not want to put a merc on par with that... i would love to see a merc able to tank the non nameds easier as far as damage mitigation and avoidance...

maybe an AA to boost the combat agility and stability and maybe the hitpoints of one's mercenary... or an aggressive/defensive stance for the merc... one that allows DPS (normal) or less DPS but with better meelee avoidance and mitigation (defensive) while fighting, and be selectable while out of combat...

HoT is on the way now should they still be upgraded?

Interesting to see this topic pop back up; 8 months later and nothing has changed. Surprised? I'm not. Mercs are a convenience for me, nothing more. I played EQ before they came out, and I'd continue to play EQ if they were never released.

What will be interesting to see is if the benefits mercs will gain by an additional 5 levels will be enough to make them viable in UF zones or even in the new HoT zones. If they're not at least viable in UF zones at that point, there's no question that they'll need some re-tuning. I should mention that I'm mainly talking about Tank mercs in this case, as the healer mercs are effective enough as-is if one is raid geared.

I tried using the tank merc in FoS and it couldn't tank the nameds even with 2 merc healers working. That was a tier 3. By the time you make it to the Warrens (still tier 3 until you complete it) even the trash hits for over 4k so tank mercs are out of the question. So their uses are pretty limited. They definitely are not going to be used for the progression part of an expansion.

*A funny side note is cleric mercs seem to take hits much better than the tank mercs do. Go figure.

I said no,

I just returned to EQ after a 6 year hiatus, I have created a Shaman on the Erollisi server. What I think about mercs, is that they are there to make it easier for me to catch up to where game is now. (I forgot all my old account info and had to start over). So if a merc can help me to get to 60 or 65 easy enough, and I get in a guild, I'm sure there will be other players alts, or even some mains that will group to help me get the rest of the way, so that I can be a viable member of group content in the current expansion. EQ has never been a single player (soloer) game, and it should never be one.

And for the times you can't find a group or a tank, your back to being screwed like the pre merc days.

You can still pop a merc and go play in SoD zones or SoF zones.

Just because there are mercs doesn't mean you should be able to pop one and go play the hardest content. They are meant to give you the ability to do something while LFG or if you don't have the time to get a group that day.

Who said they want to do the hardest content in UF or HOT expansion. Maybe your little Raid clique may have no problem finding/creating "perfect" groups in your empty expansion (UF) but not everybody is (or wants to be) in the same empty world as you. EQ got away (a bit) from listening to one section (minority) of the playerbase at the expense of all others. Then the elitist whiners got UF tuned for their minority so much so, that they had to tune down many Raids etc during the course of 2010.

Following this logic you either find a group, or you don't play. Long gone are the days where you can just run over to a commonly populated zone, and /ooc that you're looking for a group. I don't know if you've tried the /lfg feature introduced into the game a few years ago, but it's pointless as no one ever bothers to use it.

Grouping 100% of the time is an unrealistic and impossible to achieve goal in todays EQ. So without mercs the options are to multi-box (expensive and not appealing to some players), wait around with /lfg up (unacceptable), solo (impossible for most classes after a certain level), or not play (also unacceptable if you're paying for access).

Mercs are upgraded by levels now with HoT just like a player is. My t5 merc tank can tank Feerrott and HoT mobs just fine with one healer.
