I am considering playing a Shadow Knight with a Shaman but since their are Cleric Mercenaries I do not want to be redundant would I be better off with an Enchanter for slows or a Beast Lord for slows, pet DPS and able to tank in a pinch??? My brother told me that Ever Quest is not as popular as it use to be and their is going to be some kind of server merge so more people can play with each other. I was wondering is the server merge thing to and is it worth me coming into a game that is 10 years old and investing in a new computer to do so or would I be better off playing World Of Warcraft or War Hammer Online?????

i am by no means a vet at this game having only returned 4 months ago myself, what i can say from my experience is although the population is much smaller than say WOW or WAR it has a much more mature player base. I have enjoyed the last four months a lot and have found other players to be extremely polite and helpful, i play on antonius bayle and the population is pretty good. If you do decide to start on AB look up Grimwold and i will try and help you out best i can. with regards to boxing i dont do it myself i find concentrating on one toon and trying to get groups with him is much more fun, not to mention cheaper to run only one account. Whatever you decide to do have fun and beware the trolls.

Some servers are deader than others, especially during certain time zones.

For example, I moved to Povar and find it a bit light on the overall population. However, there's a regular group of us playing casually around 6-9 EST... so it depends what you are looking for.

Shaman (in my view) is the most popular box. Slows and buffs that are still meaningful and of course heals if the cleric merc isn't keeping up. Some will chime in supporting chanter boxes, I prefer them as mains.

It really depends what you want to spend most of your time doing. If you are going to casually dabble and level up slowly it doesn't matter what you pick. If you aspire to end game raiding... that might change your ranking of options.

I've played WoW and War. They both have some good features EQ should steal. Overall EQ is still miles ahead, a big factor being the community of players that remains.

Sk/Shaman is a very popular duo, better IMO than a SK/Enc mainly due to the more powerful melee buffs that the shaman has. Since the SK can single pull with FD, there's little need to an enchanters main purpose of crowd control.

Mana regen is a non issue for this pair due to shammy's canni ability and the sk mana taps.

SK/Shaman is a great combination. Having a cleric merc, IMO, is not redundang. You can let the merc heal and let the shaman focus on DPS and stuff. I have a SK/BST combo, which is great too. BST pet adds nice DPS, they can slow, buff OK (shaman buff better) and toss some DoTs. Chanter is good for CC but I don't think they put out as much DPS as the shaman or BST (plus the BST can send in the pet and autoattack while you worry about the SK if necessary.

There are no current plans for a server merge. As noted, some servers are more populated than others, but you can still find people to play with and if you're going to box a healer/tank then you have the make up of a very good group already that you can add some DPS to.
