I must confess to leveling on Neriak, Commonlands, Innothule, and Steamfont guards. The trolls were especially lucrative. People would run to them for help and there wouldn't be anyone there.
I at least felt a twinge of guilt for depriving them of protection so if they were a "good race" I would buff them up and give them sow so they could at least make it to somewhere safe.

The various dwarves in Butcher Block were great for camping as well.
Signus Boran, etc.

Nowhere was really safe on Rallos Zek as there were/are no teams. To this day I wished I had made the switch over to Tallon and Vallon Zek when they launched.

I have a couple of stories but one in particular I will never forget,
it was probably somewhere around November of 1999 I had two characters I was leveling a Druid and a Cleric
my Druid was level 30 am I cleric was 47 this was around the time when fear was live and there was no
level requirement at that time this was for about two weeks as I recall I had taking my level 30
Druid to the rade so that I could live items in fear at the time while the next day SOE had closed
the zone and made it a level requirement of 47. This was funny because at the time
when drizzle row I was the only level 30 Druid running around with fear geer ROFL.

Another story myself and a friend or both Druids at the time and there was a GM event in Qeynos we were running to the bridge
and then my friend was attacked by Griffith we had just got our GATE spell ROFL I manage the zone after was clear
I zoned back and and there was his corpse I told him not to panic that my GATE would gate his quartz back to his location
LOL NOT the next thing you know I'm standing at my Bind spot the ORC left right next to my friend and we are laughing owr *** off

Remember the days before a shared bank account when you had to have a trustworthy person hold stuff for you or you had to drop it and then switch toons.

Since see invis was not standard on items back in the day, I created a barbarian rogue to hide and sneak. There were a couple out of the way places in Halas that people would use to "transfer" gear. I would hang outside the bank, and watch for people to run to a particular building. I would wait for the person to drop the gear and log off. I would snag the gear and then hide-n-sneak again. Back then, there were usually lots of people in each starting city so it was hard to single out who took it. I did return the gear when it was obviously some lowbie stuff (like patchwork), but I did score some nice items. It was easier to camp items this way on a Saturday or Sunday instead of going to a dungeon.

Somehow my main character got a reputation of returning all items from looted PC corpses and being trustworthy to hold something. Heck, when I held something for someone, I usually eanded up getting some plat for being honest, so I never through much of it. My honesty paid off later when I applied to a tough-to-get-into raid guild. The leader was someone that I held end Velious stuff for once. I got to skip the entire application process and was made a full member.

Before I knew of zone walls (and the lack of mobs on them), I used to travel through zones on the "dirt" path. Initially, I used to stop and read the sign posts.

Before EQMapfiend and EQ Atlas, did you ever sketch your own maps? I found my old EQ notebook and looked at my various maps. A couple were close, but others were way off. Most of the zones were just a series of /loc numbers.

I remember dropping some stuff on the floor in a building, logging off and then back on with another toon and watching as a freaking rat ate my items. Rats would actually take items back then. I lost big on that one.

If it makes you feel better, whatever you lost could probably be bought back for 400pp or less these days Smiley: wink2

Anyone remember watching the Priest of Discord fight the guards in Gfay? I'm not really sure how they did it, but I think someone would charm a female NPC (name escapes me) and make her attack the PoD. This in turn would **** off the guards and the fight would ensue. The PoD always won. He was one tough mo fo.

I remember people gathering together to kill him.
I also remember when people would make the mistake of attacking him and having him shout "All witness this fool!!" or something like that.

I also remember having to do gear transfer the old way.
I was very careful but once I did loose a bag of stuff when I tried
to drop and retrieve in Ak'Anon.
Serves me right for trying to do that in a town full of filthy gnomes.

I used to purposefuly train Hill Giants to the guards near the gypsy camp in NK. The guards would die fighting it, but it would be so weak after that that I could finish it off easily with my druid.

I hated Hill Giants and Griffs with a passion. I still remember the first time I solo'd each.

On Rallos, in Kelethin, people would cast Whirling Wind on people as they ran up and down the ramps. This would push them off the ramps/platforms and usually result in their deaths. "Paying for a corpse loc!" was a common shout in those days.

Skilling up sense heading and swimming were pita

Used to make good money fetching higher level players food and water when they were camping stuff (or just summoning the food and water) and also by being a money exchanger. They'd be overloaded with cash (especially in Rathe Mountains) and we would take cash, buy gems, give the gems back and players would let us keep some cash. Lowbie grunt work but it paid well ;)

In Gfay, you would charm a bat and send it at the PoD. The PoD would attack the bat and, due to some goofy aggro mechanics or another, this would enrage the guards and they'd attack the PoD. The guards didn't care that the PoD was mad at you (attacking the PoD directly didn't get you guard help) and the guards would happily kill a bat chasing you... but the guards took exception to the PoD smacking a bat.

If the PoD won that fight (and he sometimes did), it was time to run like hell for the zone line Smiley: grin

I remember walking through karana and some druid comes up to me and gives me Petrified Erudite Heart Amulet, YES AC 2 int 5 and mana 15. All of a sudden I was something special, that loot rocks!
Question for any of the mages out there.
Did anyone sit in the lake of ill omen from around level 34 with an earth pet parked on the blood goblin spawn and come back to 44 or something like that afk for 10 days?

I remember pet classes doing something like that in Nurga or Droga. There's a tunnel near the zone-in with one wandering spawn. A mage or a shaman could summon his pet and sit at the end of that tunnel. The pet would kill the spawn all day (and all night) long and never lose. The player would go afk and gain levels overnight.
