Simple question... what, in your opinion.. is the worst camp ever? for my money... Lhrancs Bracer from Howling Stones... must've spent two weeks up there... that sk still owes me

My vote goes to the cleric epic 1.0 and having to sit in Sol A camping Lord Gimblox. By the time you get there you are level 50+ and nothing gives exp anymore. Not to mention he is pretty darn rare.

I doubt I will ever be convinced anything is as rare as King Xorbb.

Since I have tried to camp him various ways for waaay more time than is sane over the years I have to consider him a bad camp.

The epic 1.0s have lots of horrid timesinks for sure.

Trying to begin my cleric's 2.0 epic in the Bloodfields. Getting the last piece (Bottom Section of an Engraved Signet). Been going there once or twice a week for the past few months with no success. The camp there is so incredibly boring and just feels like I'm never going to finish my 2.0. :(

I'm gonna take a weird position on the whole camp / placeholder / rare spawn thing. To me it can be a love hate kinda thing. If you just walked in, killed the mob, looted, and went off to the next thing, would there be any sense of relief/accomplishment when you finished?

If every rare mob was spawned and dropped his rare loot every time, there wouldn't be rare loot and people talking about the epic journeys they had getting it. I appreciate the epicness EQ provides in even mundane encounters.

Having said all that, I remember back when there was always someone sitting in Iceclad Ocean, waiting for (something) to spawn so he could alert his guild and take it down. I dunno what it was but the effort required couldn't possibly have been worth camping a spawn 24x7. Everquest was a game of extreme time sink and it is still evolving from that into a game that is more friendly but still challenging to people that have other things to do aside from play and play.

It's a tough balance. I don't envy the devs in always making every encounter perfect.

I believe that was Lodizal.

For me, it was Eldrig the Old in Skyfire for my bard's epic. I never saw him, despite days upon days upon months of camping. It was the only piece I never got.

Epics did have a lot of those kind of camps, but that was alright, because I was always of the mind that epics weren't really epic if everyone had one. I'm a fan of long camps, too, because of that rush you get when the mob finally pops, you crack open that loot window and are greeted by your own relieved exhalation. That was always the best.

Stormfeather for the Eyepatch of Plunder. At the time, it was one of the very few clicky haste items and, for most classes, the only usable one. I once thought about getting it a year or so ago until I looked it up and realized the 15% haste was a joke compared to just buying haste potions.

I don't remember any insanely long placeholder camps since I usually got lucky on spawns or else just didn't bother with them. But I do remember spending several days trying to get Dylin Starshine for the Testament of Vanear quest waaaayyyy back in the early days of EQ. The ***** of it was that he's on a six hour timer but, back then, if you left the spawn point, chances were you'd return to find someone else claimed it. And, of course, if you were there but AFK when he spawned, someone else would yoink him. So I'd wind up going AFK to sleep and setting my alarm for 5 1/2 hours to give me time to get up and try to get him.

That was my very first "real" quest (something more involved than "bring me orc belts") and I was proud as punch of that book for the longest time.

I definitely agree with you Samatman... there is a satisfaction to opening that loot window and seeing that item you've waited for pop up... especially on the long ones

I spent 104 hours camping Stormfeather back in...2003? After hour 30 or so, I got so angry that I promised myself I'd get it or quit EQ. Shows you how addicted I was, I guess.

I agree that when we are proud of what we do in EQ, it is because of how difficult it is accomplish whatever it is we do - or we'd be playing WoW instead. However, I still feel it's bad coding when getting what you want basically comes down to luck and not skill, ingenuity, or teamwork. And back then, finding Stormfeather up WAS down to luck. These days he seems to be up every time I pass by (but not when I leave).

I was lucky and only had to camp Stormfeather for 18 out of 24 hours, as I was lucky that I was there when he had died previously. So I got there around the minimum time he was supposed to respawn and started waiting. I camped him for about 12 hours, took a nap for 6, and then came back for another 6 when he finally spawned.

At the time that was the longest/hardest camp. Not because he was hard or it was hard to get to... but because it was just soooo damn boring. LOL I must have killed hundreds of wandering cougars in that time. Just to do anything while waiting.

More recently, the longest camp I did was Library Director Eslissar in Kurn's Library. I didn't have to compete for the camp because I was doing it late night/early morning just me and my merc. I camped it for 6 hours a few different nights, and 3-4 hours a couple other nights. All total I camped him for about 36 hours. I gave away essences, gear and augs to guildies and their alts, and finally he popped after about a week and a half camping this nearly every night.

They recently raised his spawn rate. /shakefist @ SoE LOL

I agree with the above posters that if it were easy, it wouldn't feel like much of an accomplishment. I have a level 65 hunter in WoW, but it doesn't feel the same when I get a new piece of gear or finish one of it's cookie cutter quests. It all seems rather bland, despite the cartoony graphics and fun little "pop culture" and humorous quirks they put into it.

EQ has that sense of accomplishment that many other mmo's lack.

And camping augs and essences and gear for hundreds of hours? Well, that just adds to the grandeur of the goal.

Ran into someone who has been camping the shrink wand in THE DEEP for a week.

Personally my longest camps were when I was doing Hadden for his earring. Got it so I would Kill him, no earring, camp out for 5 and a half hours and relog. Got my fishing and swimming skill way up! First 6 kills had no ring.

Didn't really have a long wait for cleric mobs. Jut got the timer of spawn down and logged in and out as needed. Same for ranger epic in hate. Did take a few days of playing but at least in hate I was getting exp.

Bad camps are the one you are currently on, it just gets worse as time flows on...

The worst camp ever, is the one on the horizon (because you know it will take more time than the last camp)...

Haha... I just remembered the original Ragefire for the cleric epic. You had to find him up since he wasn't triggered. Guilds would have phone trees so you could get a call at 2:45am -- "Ragefire's up! Log in and help us!"

That stupid half-elf mask in Jaggedpine...camped that forever, and a bard in my guild was camping it at the same time ( well, when I wasn't there, of course Smiley: sly )

Never got it...I love illusion masks and the like, but gave up on that one ( well, switched servers, too )

Ack.. you reminded me that Hadden was the first long camp I attempted... 9 hours and swimming from super low to maxed out. Barely managed to kill him too --apparently I was a little underlevelled for the job.

Vaniki in Dragon Necropolis for the Willsapper. Only real good thing about it was that mobs still gave some xp. Almost 3 years now I think since I got it. I literally never left that zone for 3 months. Anytime my bags were full, I would log in my druid account, transfer items and have hime sell. I hated the camp and loved it with a passion.

Yes, I would. If only because I dodged the bullet that other people had to take in the gut. I also don't think 'time spent' equates to difficulty so rare drops are, to me, a timesink designed by unimaginative people who don't have the time, resources, or creativity to create difficult tasks without just making it take more time sitting around doing little. It's like what SOE did in early Kunark when they moved "uber" loot like the Necklace of Superiority (which used to drop in Dalnir) and Blade of the Black Dragon Eye (Sebilis) from "easy" zones and mobs to HS and VP. That was an example of adding difficulty to an item's acquisition, rather than just making it more rare (and thus, take more time to get it).

I've never had a particularly bad epic camp. Between 7 2.0'd clerics, two SKs, and most other classes, I've done pretty much all of them. I believe 6 hours was the longest static (i.e. me sitting at the camp, actively at the keyboard) camp I've done. I always used Gimblox and human Rage as PLing opportunities for my littler characters (or alts of friends) so it was never particularly onerous. Heck, I have to do Raster again for my little monk and even if I don't do it with a crew supporting her, I don't see it being difficult or time consuming (given the mudflation of the game).

Worst camp I've done is Jed Sticklebush for the half elf mask. I think I've averaged 27 hours per mask so far (and still have 4 more to get).

Anyone besides me in here ever done the Whistling Fists quest?

The final task is a turn-in to Cazic-Thule in Fear. However, every Paladin in Norrath killed him like clockwork. Add to that hassle the fact that one had to kill or evade everything in Fear except C-T himself and that made for one hell of a long wait to finish the quest.

I'll add that when I finished, I did it solo at lvl 56.

I'd second the Cleric 1.0 epic camp. And of course to any camp like that you add the fun of KSing latecomers.

One of the hardest was a Vah Shir class quest for a small owlbear claw that dropped rarely of one mob that spawned every 30 minutes. I think it took me about 4 weeks.

I remember the first time I did the "temp" quest being really long...

but part of that was because at the time people thought you had to kill ALL the mobs on the beach, so I was doing that, which meant I was only killing the placeholder every 60th(?) mob...Smiley: glare

Second time took me two kills...Smiley: grin

Pharming the cleric epic pieces that drop in Skyfire was always a pain. Every guild needed to coddle and nurture their clerics, we always wanted them to have their epic, since it's the one epic (back then) essentially for raiding, so it was always a guild duty to help all the guild clerics get this part of their quest done.

Running around that god-ugly zone and dealing with debuffing dragons did not make for fun play time.

My least favorite...yet the one I remember being most excited about after I got my drop...was the VT shard from Maiden's Eye. I seriously almost shed a tear of joy after finally getting that drop. Not only was the camp stupid long, but at the time, you also had to compete with the people that wanted to use the zone for experience.

Come to think of it, most of Luclin was filled with crazy long camps...VT shards, Shissar Ring, Shissar Bane weapons, Seru Bane weapons...

Anyway, like some others I have also gotten lucky on some camps...I have done the 1.0's for Warrior, Cleric, Druid, Monk, Ranger, and Mage and can't really recall any horrible time at any one camp.

Like someone else mentioned above, my first real camping that I did was for Dylin Starshine or wahtever his name was for the Testament of Venear quest. I still remember finally getting him at 4am before work one day...made me smile all day even though I got like 2 hours sleep. Good times.

The original ragefire camp for cleric 1.0. It was in Naggy's lair (7 day respawn). On Xegony, if you were there the longest, you got the rights to the kill. I was there a week, waiting for my turn to wait. Once I was there basically another week waiting. I slept at most 4 hours a night, to keep someone from stealing the camp. Nothing since has even come close.
