EQ1 or EQ2Follow

#1 Aug 29 2009 at 3:22 PM Rating: Decent
I'm debating between playing EQ 1 or EQ 2. I played EQ1 for years just after Kunark was released. I switched to EQ 2 shortly after release and played that for a while. Currently, I'm playing WoW, but I've become extremely bored with the game. I'm looking for something for challenging, and that brought me back to the EQ games. However, I don't have a much time to devote to raiding, so I'm going to choose whichever EQ game has more group content to offer.

So, for someone who doesn't plan on raiding at endgame, does EQ 1 or EQ 2 offer more content? Thanks in advance!

Note: I'm not very interested in PvP in either game.

Well on this forum you are likely to garner pro-eq testimonies vs. anything else. I dabbled in EQ2 recently before coming back to EQ. I prefer EQ, I am comfortable with the faults/style of EQ. If EQ2 had launched as polished as it is now --it would have been way more successful than it was.

More content... does any game have more content than eq?

Casual playable content that is fun/rewarding/generally useful when you can do it... EQ2 might have the edge here to be honest, but I found replayable (on alts) to be very low (much the same as WoW for me).

Both games are really good in my opinion.

Ya, I think I might go with EQ 1. I have the same opinion about alts as you do. I could just never get myself to level another character in either EQ2 or WoW. Thanks for the reply.

I only played EQ2 for a few weeks upon its release and haven't since.... so I cant really comment on it.

Eq has kept me very busy for many many years now. I have never been a big raider type so yes there is plenty to do in the group game.

Alt's are very addicting in EQ, as each class offers it own challenges and playstyles. You can be a longtime veteran of one class, and then feel like a total noob when starting a new class : )

EQ1 is much much much more casual player friendly now. Mercs, easier exp (especially at lower levels), hotzones, and whatever else make it very easy to hop on for half an hour or an hour and actually accomplish something now. ALTs are even more addicting cause with a merc you can go 1-25 in a few hours easily if you know what you are doing. I've only played the EQ2 trial that you can download, and I honestly did not like it. Graphics wise it's pretty damn nice, but that was about the only thing I liked. That's just personal opinion, though. There is plenty of content available because of all those additions to the game I mentioned at the beginning. I'm at 75 with my Monk right now, and there are easily 10+ zones I can molo (merc solo) in for AA xp right now. AAs are easier than ever to get due to XP bonus so people can catch up to those with 2k+.

So, I think I'm going to go necro. They seem like a good class to play in order to get back into the feel of the game. Thanks for the replies guys.

They both have free trials. Check them out and you'll be in a better position to pick one or the other.

Don't even bother with the trial for EQ1... its an old version eq, missing many of the things now in the game like out of combat regen and mercanaries. It hosts a few bugs as well. It's something they need to update or remove.

Never tried the trial for EQ2 so cannot comment, but I gave EQ2 a try when it was released... 3 weeks later I was back home on EQ1, and have remained there ever since.

I would suggest avoiding the trial and just going for it, purchase Seeds of Destruction for EQ1 so you have full access to the game & mercanaries. EQ is a great game, and its never been a better time to start playing.

I would go with a mage. Necro's are fun until you want to killed a named. Then it will dawn on you that every named summons and will be off limits to you. Then you realize that you just spent 65 levels for nothing. Just my opinion but that is what happened to me.

Necros are a fine class and don't need decent gear or buffs to succeed at the lower levels. There is a learning curve to playing them well. I loved my necro 1-65 but bogged down 66-70 and then lost the joy (for awhile at least). Aggro kiting is a powerful strategy and the bread-and-butter for necros at higher levels and in newer content.

The prevalence of summoning mobs in later content can be frustrating if you are mostly soloing.

If using mercenaries (tank or healer) it really changes what can work well.

There's no harm in playing multiple classes to 25 to get a basic feel for the strategy/playstyle of each --keeping in mind that post 55 many things change.
