There definitely were some flaws in the way SOE ran that so call voting poll asking us what server type we wanted:
The poll was set to automatically keep coming up each and every time you logged in (rather annoying if you don't want to vote) so you just voteThe default vote for the poll was 51/50 which was the only so called new ruleset players understood so that pretty much cinched the new ruleset playersThere was no "Not Interested" option for players that didn't care (thus most voted 51/50) and had no intentions of playing on a new server - that allowed the anymosity between regular servers and the old progression/combine servers to resurface and the regular server toons that didn't care less were able to get the last jabThe poll (like you already noted) was open ONLY to paying subscribers - They could have conducted the poll using IP logging insteadThe results were never released - SOE claims fictional reasons like competitors wanting to know the numbers and such - but think about it... SOE rules the MMO world with how many games now? 1. Nothing wrong with this
2. *shrug* if people really cared about having a particular server, they're intelligent enough to
click a different circle, I'd think.
3. That animosity existed for a reason. Progression proponents were some of the most abrasive, annoying, petulant turds I've encountered in MMOs (and I've been playing WoW since the stress test)
4. Why shouldn't it be? The only people that matter to an ongoing business based on recurring payment of fees are....the people actually paying those fees. You don't get offered a Centurion card for using a VISA or Mastercard. So why should people who aren't paying the cost, be the boss?
5. SOE rules the MMO world? Okay, where's the DeLorean? I thought this was 2009? This little company no one ever heard of released this game back in '04...
I wasn't really very interested in Mayong but I sure as hell wasn't going to let progression win so the whiny masses could stand on the outside looking in and try to comment. So my 30 votes helped launch Mayong. yay! I'll probably box a group there from time to time but it's probably not going to be my main server (got too much work invested in Rendition and most of my characters aren't 'done' yet. Even the 85s). In my view, they should roll out a Mayong option to all servers (i.e. if you have an 80 or 85 on your account, you have the option of starting new toons at 51). As Reyla says, it would only save a few days (hell, 2-4 hours for me, depending on class) but that period is largely trivial in today's game. You don't learn grouping dynamics at level 30 anymore. Why is that? Well, it could be, because there's no one at those levels like it was in say 2000 or 2001.
This isn't the same game anymore. The sooner people realize that, the sooner they'll avoid disappointment when a corporation decides not to indulge their nostalgic fantasies.
