Everyone's mileage varies but I buff players and get lots of positive feedback. I make a point of trying to form pickup groups and rarely run into problems; in fact, it's usually a pleasant experience and I've had friendships continue well after the initial pickup group contact.
You get out what you put into something, especially when it involves people. I think as a rule those who make friends quickly in a social game like EQ are those that freely help others, give free ports or even just free advice, buff others without expectation of compensation and just generally act NICELY.
How often do you hear a noob or a new returnee ask a question in general chat and NOBODY responds? I always try to but so many times the player asking the question gets NO RESPONSE. Hey, that works well to make him/her feel welcomed, eh?
Not to pick on one server, but since it's PVP, what the heck! What amazed me about the Zek server, when I used to play there, was that not only does nobody buff for free, back then it was the ONLY server that I ever played on where the buffing classes would specify the PRICE of their buffs AND EXPECT PAYMENT UP FRONT! Of course, I admit that was a few year's back but I haven't played on Zek since so I have no idea if that's changed. But I could see where any noob foolish enough to start on Zek in those days would think that nobody nice plays EQ. ;)
