Core rule challengeFollow

#1 Jun 18 2009 at 11:14 AM Rating: Decent
So me and a friend got bored and have decided to do a 'core rule' challenge on an alt, only going to expansions up to PoP.

I plan to play a toon i havent played before, that being either:

A- Ranger
B- Monk
C- Wizzy

My friend is playing a Bard, and not sure which toon will really fit into a group well. Wizzy i have doubts about due to Aggro control, so i thought i'd ask for your input :)

We will also not be wearing any items past and including the PoP exp.

A. Ranger

Sounds a lot of fun if your going to just use what the group has. Your ranger can tank while the bard does his thing. I wonder if the bard song dmg shield and a ranger ds stack? Your ranger will have mild heals to keep things going. Your tag team can give them hell with skin like diamond and storm strength.

Ranger or wizard gives you more kiting options with the bard which you'll need to tackle harder hitters (I'm assuming "core rules" means no mercs). Personally, I'd go ranger because you don't want to only kite -- at least I wouldn't want to. It gets boring and sometimes you'd rather go toe-to-toe.

Also, rangers and wizards offer more utility than the monk. The best utility the monk will offer is pulling and you already have a bard for that.

Having played both pre PoP (Ranger first char I ever had, monk being second)I would have to go with the monk and here is why:

A. Gear was tough to come by and monks actually do better with less gear. They also have an innate avoidance going on that allows them to tank pretty darn well.

B. They start with duel wield at level one (17 for the ranger) and get offensive abilities much sooner than rangers which puts their dps much higher. By the time a ranger starts getting into his offensive skills the monk is already master at his.

C. Rangers never do get a decent enough heal to cast in the heat of battle, not if they are the ones tanking, and monks get mend which is enough of a heal to make a difference.

Of course all this is all variable and when you get to higher levels it is all mute as you will need a healer to tackle higher lvl mobs (45+), unless you plan on having the bard kite and the ranger sitting back with his bow but I can see that getting old pretty fast.
