Powersources are primarily purchased in The Buried Sea and in Katta Castrum off of Trader Vallarines for Orux, the TBS specific alternate currency earned through doing progression missions or purchased from other players in the bazaar. These powersources are listed under their vendors as "Energeians" because they are a variety of "energeian orb" whose power level depends on your faction rating and how much you're willing to spend. You can also, if you are able to complete some raids in Solteris, purchase raid Energeians whose benefits can be found here.

Now, Infusible simply means that having an energeian orb will increase or decrease your stats based on the quality and type of orb you use, for each piece of infusible armor. If you have 3 pieces, your stats will go up and down by the amount specified in the orb's type and quality for each piece times the percentage of purity (30 purity = 30% purity). Say it adds 10 Str and 15 HP after purity mod, you get 30/45 added for having 3 pieces of that quality. I haven't had the most time to play with them, but if you want a good look then check out Latan's page, he's great for info and he posts quite a bit on Alla.

I may have left some stuff out or possibly even gotten it wrong, I don't have the most experience with these as I'm out of Orux and still needing to outfit 3 alts with Katta spells. (looking at needing thousands of Orux yet) If anyone has corrections then please don't let me misinform someone. It will help me as well in the future.

Recap:
Latan's merchant guide (some description of Energeians related to their merchant.)
Latan's Raid Energeians (Stats based on 75 purity armor for the raid quality powersources.)
EQWiki's description and stats of normal energeians. (contains a link to Latan's raid stats at the bottom)

Here's a post about them. Has a link to a guide on making your own as well. Think it says basically same thing Torgayeth said (been a while), but the tradeskill link may be of some use.

This is only MY opinion, of course, but I view these orbs as a needless and fairly close to useless additional timesink to the game. I mean for every benefit they give you, they take something of close to equal value away, and to top it off, they "decay" over time so you have to worry about replenishing them.

Now I know some players just HAVE to maximize their favorite stats, which means to them chasing down a +50 food item to replace their current +40 food item is worth spending hours on bakery skills or pharming needed components. But not for me and frankly for "younger" players I think this just makes the game seem more complicated than it is.

I feel somewhat the same about tribute, although that can be worth a certain effort since the benefits to be obtained can be significant. But with tribute you do need to remember to turn it ON and OFF and who hasn't kicked themselves in the posterior when they left tribute running for hours while they browsed the Bazaar or just goofed off without fighting for a stretch in game.

One could argue that this kind of "depth" makes EQ different from every other game since there is so much in it that even experienced players don't know. But this depth also can make the game real intimidating for new and returning players. So if you're a noob or a noon-returnee, maybe think about tribute at some point but leave the power source stuff for when you really have some spare down time.

Power Sources are an excellent way to boost your stats with very little effort regardless of Sippin says. I currently use Tier-4 and Tier-5 SOD armor with purity augs inserted into each of those armor items to boost the purity level. Now if you take a power source and drop it into your inventory slot your stats will change depending on the type of power source you have selected to use. The effects vary depending on the level, most tend to stick with Translucent or Pure. Both require you to be level 75 but Pure also requires you to have completed either the Solteris raids or any SOF or SOD raid.

Power Sources can now be crafted using the pottery skill. Considering how much people spend on mercs (tier 5 mercs costing 10k or so to buy, and 94p every 15 minutes. I would have to say the cost of power sources are much cheaper than tribute. Leaving your power sources in will not wear them out. Only in combat do they tick down, unlike mercs left on balanced/reactive or tribute left on that will eat your alive.

Visit this page on EQ Power Sources I found a while back, it is a good way for you to determine what power source will suit your needs the best. If the armor items that you have do not have the stat "purity" on them, then those items will not gain any effect from your power source. The more items you have with purity in them, the faster your PS will burn up during combat. Considering the cost to buy them in the bazaar or make depending on the level of PS you use, I find them very cheap (500-2500 pp). The following items could potentially have purity stats on them:

  • wrists
  • hands
  • head
  • legs
  • arms
  • chest
  • feet

Hey, I'm open to being convinced. Show me a powersource that a returning player, presumably with a whole inventory of slots needing serious upgrades and improvements, is really going to benefit from.

Yeah, I can see where a serious end-game raider with most stats maxed out can benefit from them. But someone who's just returned and trying to acquire some knowledge of the game would be far better studying armor quests and drop locations than fretting about an infusible item that, for example, trades 200 HPs for 40 ac, or 200 mana for 250 HPs.

I mean, no offense to Torgayeth, but read his first two paragraphs again... trying to absorb all that gives me a headache, let alone a newly returned player. Can't we just agree that Sony made the whole infusible/powersource thing just a tad too complicated?? They do have a tendency to do that... like inserting 100 different types of campfires, even though 99% of players tend to use 1 of maybe 3 different types. (I mean I can't remember the last time I needed to boost the entire group's, oh say, DEX, as opposed to their HP, AC or mana. And I doubt I'll ever be in a group that needs to be in evil eye illusion!)

Same for tribute benefit options. Far more than most people ever use. Choices are always nice but overkill is not.

Aye, Sippin. Honestly, in my opinion, all the expansions after TSS have been overly complicated with numerous factions required to max for even partial function of your toon and those 20-40 part quest lines to build one item that goes in a specific slot and. . . grrr. Ye,s even i'm confused by my post because honestly I don't understand energeians very well. All I know is that using the Translucent Elemental obs gives me the most AC for its lack of negatives. It doesn't raise anything by a lot but it doesn't lower anything at all. Add the stats (dumbed down to 4-5 AC from not having 100% purity) on 8 items gives me another 32-40 AC and boosts my HP by about 400. I go simple on it.

Get gear with slot 13/14 and throw some more purity in it, buy the elemental orb because it has more AC than the Light orb and neither have any negative stats, and all I get is a gain. It doesn't matter to me that it's not the biggest boost in the world. What matters is that for 20 Orux I can have a boost to almost everything for a while. *shrug* That's the simple part. Learning the factions, quests, currency, locations, all that crap is the hard part. Once you can buy these and farm an easy mission for Orux, you're set on powersources for life.
