Just coming back since KunarkFollow

#1 Jun 16 2009 at 4:38 AM Rating: Good
Hiyas,

I'm an old school power gamer from back in the day. I used to have a plethora of accounts on Mith Marr and Lanys and used to raid heavily. I made it through Kunark, I actually bought Velious and did a few raids before quitting, however, after all this time I've decided to come back and give it another go.

My problem is 15 expansions later, I really dont know much about this game anymore. I've recently levelled up a shaman to 32 and was curious, what gear could I get or should I be on the lookout for to spruce the character up a bit?

I dont need anything elaborate since I am on a conquest to 60 so gear will get seriously outdated fairly quickly. I'm 32 wearing lvl 6 gear due to the above reasons.

Does anyone with a relevant sense of today's equipment have any guidance for a returning player?

They released defiant armor sets for almost every level.

Since you left before luclin, you may not have been to the bazaar before. It's a place where players can become traders and sell the items they have in their trader's satchels, and where players can type /bazaar to see a list of traders and what they have for sale. https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/zones.html?zstrat=154 It's much more convenient than the tunnel and kelethin :)

Where to start the reply to your question of "Where do I start?" LOL... ok let me try to help a bit if I can. Only going to make some notes here for you to investigate further rather than hold your hand:

  • Hot Zones give double exp (maybe 50% more but hey it's a lot more)
  • dungeon settings give more exp (indoor)
  • Anything before Kunark is obsolete in terms of questing, level up fast to 65, then earn AAs - some even go to level 80 so they can wear the level 80 NO TRADE items that drop off every name in various Seeds of Destruction (SOD) zones
  • Defiant gear drops like candy and is tradable, get some from bazaar cheap
/claim your Gift of Legacies Lost
  • Mercenaries are now a HUGE part of the game - there are currently 2 types of mercs. Healers and Tanks. Their abilities are based on your progression through the SOD themes and the farther you progress the more confident a mercenary you can purchase
  • It would be wise to read through the SOD write up to get an idea. Basically Seeds of descruction is like a throw back to the past. Field of bone was once a zone where the middle wasn't blown out, and Kurns tower wasn't crumbling.

  • Grouping is often done now with just one other person or two. No longer will you be shouting in ooc or general chat for a healer to come join your group (that's a huge topic of discussion right now in other posts)
  • Raiding takes place in high end guilds that most likely want 80+ level of toons with over 1,000 AAs before they even read your application. There are casual guilds out there that will help you get to that point.
  • ores, silks, animal pelts, uncut gems, powders, and various other tradeskill items drop - all used in tradeskills that were introduced in the Secrets of Faydwer expansion. If you like tradeskills hang onto them. If not, sell them in the bazaar
  • The bazaar looks a little differnt now but contains basically the same elements as that big lagging box zone you once remembered. Now there are traders, the normal toons selling you stuff they find - and also BUYERS that will buy stuff off you that you don't want.
  • There is a Guild Lobby now, kind of like the lobby of a hotel where everyone uses it like the entrance way into their respective guild halls and then there is the guild hall which includes bankers, guild bankers (items for members), teleporter, merchants, tradeskill devices, and an augmentation device
  • Augments are a large part of gear now. They add stats and sometimes effects to items you put them on. They are slot type specific so understanding how augments work, how they are made or where they are found will help you greatly
  • Find yourself a guild that will suit your needs. Figure out your play schedule and desire to play, find the guild that offers you what you need and where you will fit in. Choose your guild wisely, server populations are low - so making a name for yourself (reputation) tends to "stick" a bit harder now than before
  • Review your Alternate Advancement (AA) winndow - there will be many many many more AA's there than you remember - these will greatly help your toon fine tune their skills beyond simply levelling up. A level 75 toon with 1500 AA's is much more useful and capable as a toon than a level 85 toon with zero AA's.
  • Review your /claim window there are a lot of claim items there that may help you such as familiars that give you hp or mana boost to your pool
  • There is a Legends of Norrath (LON) card game accessed from your EQ button. Some enjoy this game some do not. I like it for the booster packs and loot rewards you can gain from them varying from illusions, potions to super fast mounts

  • This list could go on for quite some time, but that will help you get started

Defiant armor is too powerful for a returning casual player. Look to the bazaar for casual armor more suited to grow in. A lot of times you can find these items dirt cheap due to the defiant overshadowing. https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=32141 is a good example of an item to grow in. Try to stay away from your merc, it really makes the game trivial.

Thanks folks, I really appreciate the help! I think I have a ton of items to claim, spread across 4 separate accounts since release lol.

I previously was a power gamer but now that I'm grown up I dont know if I have the time to invest countless hours into a game, I'm like a hybrid now. I love power gaming but only when its done effeciently.

I think the defiant gear is just what I'm after, that should help me on my grind to an appropriate level. Thanks again for the help, much appreciated!

Something else really really silly. I could have sworn I used to bind mouse 3 to jump, mouse 4 for thrown items and mouse 5 I used to have bound to a hotkey for /assist.

I cant seem to bind anything to the mouse anymore. Did something change in the past few years with how things are able to be bound on the keyboard/mouse?

Strange... I thought SOE brought out defiant armor and the jewelery items available in POK to help the returning players level up so they too could catch up to their friends and enjoy the game in a group. Mercs were brought out because of the lack of clerics in the game, it's the largest selling point of the SOD expansion and you want this returning player to just ignore the existance of defiant gear and mercs for what purpose exactly?

I can't believe you would suggest to someone to wear armor that comes from a mob in Omens of War. Other than epics, imo, that entire expansion is a waste of time for the under conned mobs, crap loot. Clearly you never noticed the fact that purhaps Ornate Defiant Chain Tunic might just exceed and reach it's maximum potential long before your suggestion of Dark Muramite Chainmail.

Seriously, it's going to be hard enough for a returning shammy to get into groups at a low level due to the greed factor of others not needing a healer that loots in their group, could we please refrain from suggesting to them to use gimp gear that is obsolete? I just don't understand your logic that gear is too powerful. That makes no sense. It's not like handing a rookie motorcycle rider a 1500 cc bike and say have at it and then they kill themselves because it was too powerful... it's quite the opposite - defiant gear will keep them more protected than the paper bag you suggest.

reaktorblue - Open the EQ button, under options, then Keys... odds are you have a new computer now and you need to set your keykeys up that you like to use.

Thats what I thought. I'm a pretty avid gamer so binding keys usually isnt too difficult. It seems as if EQ does not recognize mouse 3, mouse 4, or mouse 5.

I even attempted to install the software for the mouse thinking maybe it was driver related but that didnt seem to help at all. In case anyone else has ever seen this, I believe the mouse is a Logitech MX510 although I'm at work at the moment and unable to check.

Defiant gear and mercs have turned the game into easy mode. No one needs every stat at cap at level 50. There is no sense of danger with full set of defiant gear and healer merc pre 70. Pull 4 dark blues, no biggie super healer merc can keep you up without breaking a sweat. It is just one big zerg fest.

Sorry but being crazy overpowered for a zone isn't fun to me. The fact that a healer merc gives a player temperance when you have a full set of intricate defiant armor plus silverwing, hotzone items is just silly to me.

I'll just keep my little pally solo, as I don't need defiant or a merc to level.
What I do need is combat agility, stability, healing adept, gift at 55 to improve my toon. The game is a lot more fun to actually use your own buffs and heals.

And to me, it is silly not to use all the things the game has to offer. I can appreciate you style of play, but I don't think that the way you play is the RIGHT way.

For a newbie player, using the mercs and defiant gear will let them learn and enjoy, and then they can go back and experiment once they have a grasp for the game. Or even for returning players like the OP...he remembers the "hard " game back in the day...be nice to learn the improvements, and then take it from there...

    #11 Jun 16 2009 at 10:16 AM Rating: Excellent
I agree Yen. There are many playstyles. Play the game the way you enjoy it!

    #12 Jun 16 2009 at 11:54 AM Rating: Good
I can appreciate both styles of play. At one point in time I was among the first few guilds to dominate the plane of fear. I hope this illustrates that I am not a complete noob and therefore worrying about mercs and/or equipment to make it fun really do not apply although I do understand and respect this point of view.

I'm merely going to grind hardcore to as high as possible and as casual as possible. I'm older now then when I first played this game on release so I've found many ways to excel at these games without involving mass amounts of time.

With that said, I really only wanted to know if there was any specific gear I could keep my eyes out for that will allow me to bridge the intermediary between lvl 10 and 40 without still using lvl 6 newbie zone gear lol.

I think the defiant gear really fits the picture here, thanks folks!!
