Zoning to...the servers?Follow

#1 May 27 2009 at 1:55 PM Rating: Decent
I know there's probably a similar problem somewhere, but I can't find it so here's the question: Why is my character sent back all the way to the servers every single time when I zone? I mean, usually when I'm disconnected I return to the toon menu, but this time it goes back to the servers which is very annoying.

It can't be the network-- since its been fine and my family's characters can zone without trouble.

This has been happening for two days now, it is just a glitch, or should I just wait a while for it to go away...I heard something about spirit mobs or something like that, so does anyone know whats going on? If it helps it is my Beastlord that is having problems.

~Thanks

Not sure but I know someone else who has this issue when they zone, it becomes so bad that at times he zones in - goes back to server select - logs back in - is in zone 1-2 min - back to server select. This seems to happen with particular zones and she has had her toon moved by GM's who also do not know whats going on.

Best thing is to /petition maybe if enough people let them know they will investigate

If it's just one character on one account that is having the issues, it could be:
1) Custom UI that you're using, something is triggering a UI element to pop up /trigger an action that crashes you (In a weird way)

Otherwise:
2) Some other UI issue... Try deleting your default ui folder, and patching it again.
3) Defragmented files that fail crc check with server when you zone in, but succeed on initial login... This seems the most likely, but would be really strange if that were the case. Try defragging, and doing a complete thorough file check.

This also happens when you are missing zone files.

Make sure you have all expansions you own installed fully.

Okay, if it continues I'll do the petition, but I guess I forgot to say that I actually DO make it to the other zone, but for some strange reason it crashes once I get to the other side and then once I log on again I am in the other zone.

Have you deleted your log file lately? What about your Journal files int he userdata directory?

Sounds like some kind of timing issue, but since it's only with the one toon, the log and journal are the only things I can think of that would be causing that much delay. Generally when it happens to all toons, it's generally either an eqclient.ini corruption / error, or server network lag spikes, but can be some of the other things mentioned above. Bad zone files generally only cause the problem in those particular zones (zoning in and/or out of them) and not every zone.

I'd check the size your log and journal files. If they're getting huge, 1GB or more, probably time to back them up or delete them. I'd also do as previously recommended and do a complete file scan to be sure some files are not corrupt.

Hope this helps some.

EDIT: Other than the aforementioned UI files, maybe a UI setting for that toon (maybe have the petition window always up, but off-screen, would cause a large lag on zoning), or possibly a corrupted Audio Trigger set, or other personal toon INI setting that's corrupted. Anyway, renaming the UI_playername_servername.INI and playername_servername.INI files out of game, can let you make sure it's not those, and just rename them back if it doesn't cure the problem.

Alright, after a few days of dealing with this stupid problem, I finally was able to zone without returning to the servers. Since it couldn't be corrupted files (since I died in the BF Moors while still bound to W. FP and having done loads of scanning which revealed nothing) this meant it probably was extra files piling up, such as logs and journals-- so all I did was a disc clean to see if that was the problem and it worked. Just saying in case anyone else had the same problem, this is what I did. Thanks to all those responded this helped a great deal. :)

Also if anyone reads this I want to ask one more thing: What are UI files specifically? I know where they are located and what they are somewhat, but why would they be causing zoning problems?

There are several parts to UI files. First is the basic UI files, which are in the everquest\uifiles subdirectories. These contain the files needed for the default UI and any custom UIs. Any problems here, will affect any toon that uses these (i.e. all toons if you only use the default UI). Most often, problems aries here after patches with custom UIs that haven't been updated to the latest EQ patch and UI changes.

The second set of files are the INI files for the UI. Each toon has one of these files and it stores, each window's position and status, as well as a few other interface options. These are the ones I was referring to in the previous post, as you can make a window stay up all the time, and set the position off screen with these files. Lots of other strange things can happen, when these become corrupted as well. These files are called UI_charactername_servername.INI in the base everquest directory.

That's just the basics. If you're interested in deeper descriptions, probably eqinterface.com is the best source.
