How to determine what spell type a spell is, you must check the resist type of the spell. You can find the resist type in many places, in-game, you can use the context menu (right-click the meditate / spell book icon on your spell gems window) and find how the spell is catergorized. Another way, and the way prior to context menus, is to check the spell info
Here or
Lucy and look for the resist type.
Anarchy as listed
here, show
MR (0) under the
Resist category, or as shown
here,
Resist: Magic (0), or finally on
Lucy,
Resist: Magic. All of these mean, Magic Resist is what is checked to see if the spell is resisted, and thus the type of focus needed. Furthermore, the (0) on the Alla, and since Lucy hadn't listed another line for
Resist Adj: it is assumed to be zero, there is no resist check adjustment.
All the types of resist checks, and Focus associated:
Magic = Magic
Cold = Cold
Fire = Fire
Poison = Poison
Disease = Disease
Chromatic = Lowest of the above five resist value is used
Prismatic = Average of the above five resist value is used
Corruption = Corruption
The type of Foci there is for spells is varied, but what you are looking for is an Improved Damage line of foci.
Here is a list of the
Best Focus Effects up to level 75. You can also find other foci and spell information and lists at
Samanna.net.
Hope this explains it clearly enough.
**** EDIT ****
Fixed typos (some anyway).
In particular on the Best Focues up to level 75, you'll want to look at the
Improved Damage Section, under both
All Type of Spells and
Magic-Based Spells **************
