Been away from the game for a good couple years now. I think Planes of Power was the last expansion I had. I had a 63 SK and 28ish bard but they're long gone. I don't remember the account name or any of that, nor do I really care anymore. I have read a little and it looks like there have been a bunch of changes in the last couple years, notably the mercs. Seems like Necro was about the top class for solo ability back in the day and I could try that, though I prefer to beat on things. To be able to log on, go terrorize some stuff for a while and maybe knock out a quest or two, what would be some strong class/race choices these days? I need to read up on the mercs but any basic info on them would also be appreciated.

Welcome back. There have indeed been a LOT of changes since PoP, most of them good in my opinion. Bad news first- there are far fewer people to group with these days until you get into the 65+ range. The good news, however, is that soloing is vastly easier than it used to be with the introduction of mercs.

Race is irrelevant anymore; it's best to pick one that you like. Class is probably a tougher choice, but know that any class can be soloed these days, using mercs.

I guess you just need to narrow it down to caster/hybrid/melee, and then to a specific class. Try several that you haven't before, in fact, because it's really not that difficult to start fresh.

If you have any other questions feel free to ask. If you happen to decide to play on Stromm, I'm happy to take in-game questions and provide some help to get started again.

Are you planning on playing with the healer merc or not ? If you plan on using the the healer merc, the whole casual level up grind is basically a trivial zerg fest any class you like will do. You can stand there with 2 or 3 mobs on you while the cleric keeps you healed.

Beastlord is a great solo class to play. If you plan on roling a tank type solo (no healer merc) then you have a long road ahead of you. All levels can be enjoyable if you take the time to enjoy each level instead of level level level no level faster. That kind of mind set can drive a person crazy.

If your enjoying your healer merc I'm glad your happy!

Yep, Maybe I'll check out that free trial and look around a bit.

Thanks for not flaming me for asking before I checked out the sticky post for returning players!

Well it looks like I may have my old characters back! I can log in and I've even upgraded to include all expansions, but I can't get into the game!

Nevermind, looks like I got it working now, couple hours downloading to go and maybe I can go check things out =)

Well I've tried a few things, got a level 10 necro and level 10 shaman now in addition to my 63 SK. Found that there was a ton of stuff I forgot about in EQ. Zoning, being chased by mobs all the way across a zone, lol. That was pretty funny actually. Took me a minute to figure out that I was never going to get the distance needed for that skellie to give up =). Meditating/resting...blah. I'm sure things go faster in a few more levels when some more powerful spells come into play but it seems like there's always going to be a lot of downtime. I don't really remember how much, but it seems like I used to have to rest a lot back in the day. I don't expect anything that will rival the nonstop action I have on my WoW Deathknight but kill 2 rest, kill 3 rest, kill 2 rest is just not going to work out for me. I haven't tried the merc thing out yet so I'm looking for recommendations on a class/merc combo for maximum carnage and levelling speed. I have a couple K platimun on the account (forgot about the cool shared banks too!) so a newb char should be able to afford the best available merc. What are the merc levels anyway? I looked on the vendor but didn't understand what all that was about.

Thanks again!

Downtime has been reduced a lot since you were last in game with OOC regen. OOC (out of Combat) regen means whenever you are in a resting state you regen 3% of your mana/hp/end every tick. At lower levels this is actually not that much quicker than normal sitting regen but at higher levels it's astoundingly fast, basically 0 to 100% in 3 minutes.
