I had my spell research capped at 200 from way back when on my necro and figured it was time to get up to date. First part was easy, drop my gearlock quill and do the trophy quest.
Last night I did 120 combines with ~80 successes, yet this only netted me 5 skillups. The combines were DB so lvl of combine wasn't a problem.
Now the question
Is this normal for such a low(relative to cap)tradeskill level or am I missing the obvious somewhere?
Any insight at all would be awesome, thanks.

That was a typical ratio,depending on the recipe and tradeskill. Seems a bit low for Research, but then again it was just dark blue trivials. I try to do at least yellow for 200+ skill level, especially with good skill mod item. You'll get more failures, but better chance of skill up.
In my experience, 30-50 above your skill for 200+ skill with mod, higher as you get closer to 300, as compared to 20-40 above yoru skill when it's less than 200 and no mod) are the best ranges for skill up chances. The 20-40 on low skills I'm pretty confident about as I've tested it at least a 50 times on various tradeskils and seems to always be around those numbers, give or take, sometimes 18-36, 15-37, 20-41, as examples.
And most of all, from only 120 combines, it could be a spurt in the Random Number Generator (RNG), but I've seen worse, even at 200 skill, and way worse at close to 300.

Thanks Yther. I figured I was in for a world of hurt when I saw the cap was raised. Hopefully your advise will keep it to a world of mild discomfort.
