Have read Ychir's note on them for returning players. A couple of questions.

What race works the best as a Necromancer?

I usually pick Pally, Ranger, Hunter types in my games and wanted to start something new.

With today's gear race is really a non-factor. Pick what you like. Some will probably say iksar's because of they have a higher innate hp regeneration than other races.

I would go with erudite. One Paineel is a kewl city for the evil necromancer once you master traveling around in it. Please don't make Cresent Reach your home city, it makes teddy bears happy, not very evil there.

Two Paineel is home to the Heretics, you already fit in with your evil self.

Three don't forget about your hole key since your amiable to the merchant!

Four, the kewl looking slippers on classic model erudites.

Iksar, not only do they have a regen rate they have a built in ac bonus.
But that's the only reason I would chose them.
Since Marres has left eq, at least until his will weekens and Miss Mandies mind control starts working, Norrath needs a replacement Iksar necro.

To answer the OP's question, though, like others have stated it all depends on what race you like to look at. Before there were AAs and nice AC on silk gear, Iksar were the logical choice because of the innate regen and AC bonus. Now it doesn't matter anymore.

I see alot of Iksar, Dark Elf and Gnome necros, but Human necros seem to be very rare. (I like making rare race/class combos).

Okay, think will make a gnome and if unhappy then maybe Iskar or Frog. First I need to see if I even enjoy being a Nec. Gnomes can run away from the mobs and hide in the tall grass and under a table though just thought I am very bad climbing ladders, cant imagine will happen with a gnome.

Thanks to all

You will buy levitation pots until as a necro you get the spell deadman floating.
I will offer you a special rate on those potions for sale on my bazaar trader jpmorgan. Of course if you dont play on povar you have to shop elsewhere.

Iksar are still better. The innate AC bonus is the only racial bonus* that cannot be made up via gear. It's not huge or anything, but it's definitely nice.

*For races that necros can play. Ogres have a pretty huge advantage with frontal stun immunity, but necros can't be ogres..

Well, first thank you Jonwin, Yes, am on Povar and wrote down your trader's name.

Well, will make one race and if not happy will switch to another. Since I have never been a caster type, it will be important as to race, sigh!

Hi Gayle, I thought I should mention some pro's and cons, in my usual list format. I have an Iksar necro and a lowbie (lvl 34) dark elf necro. I would go with the Iksar, personally, but here's a list of why I say that;

Iksar, PRO's

1. They have a nice armor class bonus, that apparently scales with level.

2. They can forage - this can be a godsend if you like to work on baking and brewing (like me) and need rare ingredients.

3. Faction - and all that comes with it - is MUCH easier for Iksar to gain with the other cities (Neriak, Freeport, Erudin, and Paineel) than the other way around.

NOTE: By using a DE illusion potion and handing Sarnak war braids to captain Rottgrime in the Overthere, it may even be possible to fix your Venril Sathir faction (haven't tried this yet, but will soon) which will allow you the usage of the Overthere outpost, the Firiona Via (evil) outpost, and all of their associated (class appropriate) quests.

4. Infravision, which is not as good as ultravision, but you still see much better than the night-blind humans and erudites.

NOTE: Because defiant armor is rather common, you can gain ultravison at level 37 by using a flawed defiant (and better quality) helm. This limits a serious bragging right that the DE's and Frogloks used to have - having to cast ultravision every 40 minutes got to be a major pain for the "less sighted" races.

5. Swim starts at 100. In addition, I have also heard that the Iksar ability to hold their breath is superior to most other races (except frogloks, which start with even higher swim and hold breath ratings). I need someone to confirm or refute this.

6. The Iksar get a minor fire resist bonus, but I get conflicting info as to whether or not this scales with level.

7. Enhanced regenerative ability - akin to that of a troll. Iksar are the only "silk wearers" who posses this ability, it improves with level, and is highly useful for outrunning the "Lich" line of mana regen spells (which drain hitpoints while they work).

Iksar - CON's

1. Despite being able to gain faction in other cities compared to other races factioning with Iksar, it still doesn't change the fact that Iksar have major faction issues.

2. A slightly decreased resistance to cold.

Many Thanks for the list! Well, made a gnome one however can certainly make an Iskar too. I like your reasoning for an Iskar. Actually, could be fun comparing the two for a while and see which works the best. As said before, I have always done Tanks and DPS melee types and do have an Enchanter from way back when but don't really enjoy the class. So, let's make an Iskar too and play a little of each and see what happens. I still love my melees too.

I played a gnome necro. You will get use to looking at the world through small eyes. However when you lich and turn to skelly form, it uses the medium skeleton model eyes, no small skeleton /ponder.

This drove me crazy, so I stopped playing a gnome necro hehe.

True but then I can use the skelton illusion to give my halflings height when they get stuck on rocks or stairs. I enjoy that use of it.

Human as a distant second.

I wouldn't do Erudite because I don't like having a disco ball embedded in my forehead (or the disco ball as my forehead).

No Iksar because they're nasty (they live in RUINS!!) and they smell. Smiley: glare

Frogs are probably the most revolting player race ever created in any game ever.

Since race is meaningless except for aesthetics, and Dark Elves are the single most aesthetically gifted race in Norrath (at least the females are. The males....meh) and Half Elves (attitude²) and Barbarians (Big Sexy!) can't be necros, it's Dark Elf then Human. Gnomes are cliché (gnecro, gnomercy, yadda yadda yadda) but they make awesome mages and wizards!
