What AA's for a warriorFollow

#1 Mar 01 2009 at 10:04 AM Rating: Decent
I seem to be adding AA's pretty regularly now at lvl 68. Unfortunately, I think i am not spending wisely though, I tend to solo alot with a cleric (68) boxed, and with a merc also (melee). What AA's discilpines should I be investing in to get best results for my typical group setup?

I'm sure The Steel Warrior has a zillion threads about this, but the obvious reply (beyond Run 3 and the HP/stat boosters) are Combat Agility and Combat Stability. Focus on defensives and those that help you taunt better.

Steelwarriors is great. They give great descriptions of the AA's and some helpful advice.
I did notice that with a melee merc I had a hard time out taunting it, so I started working on offensive AA's to help kill mobs faster. My set up is similar to yours, 66 cleric with a 65 warrior.
I was able to "mow" through mobs better letting the merc taunt and trying to create the most DPS I could with my warrior.

Max out ferocity, flurry and combat fury. Also get ambidexterity & sinister strikes. This will give you quite a decent dps boost.

With today's gear, I usually max out dps aa's first then go back and do defensives.

Good advice, I just disagree with the order. After Ferocity and Ambidex, Weapon Affinity should be the very next AA purchased. The reason being, warriors will always have some kind of proc on their weapons and damage generates aggro (ask any zerker/rogue/wizard). More procs = more damage = more aggro (potentially). Then I'd do flurry and CF (mainly because crits are no more aggro than a normal hit) then sinister strikes.

TSW's AA guide should give you a good enough idea to tailor to your own situation and playstyle though. Personally, the warrior I'm working on now isn't going to do stats (i.e. strength, stamina, etc) until after 1500 AA. But that's just personal preference (my higher warrior kept Innate Stamina maxed from 51 on, being a wood elf. Sintara's a dark elf but she's younger so gear keeps her capped).

To get more agro, you need more swings and more procs, and higher agro per proc. Hitting harder or procing for more will not increase agro. In fact, you can keep agro while doing zero damage (for instance, while fighting Emperor Ssraeshza). So, combat fury and ingenuity do nothing for agro. The first agro AA you should buy is ambidexterity- it increases dual wield by about 9%, which means something like a 6% increase in both dps and agro, for only 9 points. And it doesn't get upgraded, so once you buy it, you're DONE. Savor that rarest of feelings in EQ...hehe.

Another important thing to keep in mind is that many of the basic AAs give the most bang for the buck at the beginning, in the first few ranks. Be sure to at least max out the Luclin defensive and hit point AAs, as they make a huge difference for very few points. Planar power, too. And area taunt often means the difference between life and death for a squishy. Gotta be close to use it.

In terms of procs, you want something with a detrimental effect in it like stun, snare, slow, etc. That part of the proc usually adds 400 agro. A DD adds one agro per point of base damage. For instance, Chaotic Strike V has a 200dd and a stun, so it's 600 total agro. IIRC, weapon affinity 5 increases procs by 50%, so that's definitely a line you want to max out. As you continue to level up, agro will become more important and harder to get, so it's good to get in good spending habits now. Don't wait until you get asked to a difficult zone to find out that you can't keep agro off the 85 rogue. This will hurt your rep, especially if they look at your gear and notice you're using a weapon without an agro proc.

stupid question here but how many AA's can you have max spent? just wondering becuase I play a warrior and I have 104 at level 55 right now.. I am spending them on my aa's at low levels since its easeri to get ( I am not getting the useless AA's jsut what I need for dps and defence) but will I run out before I get what I need (just getting dps/defenseive and a couple of the warrior required like area taunt) will I spend to many and be unable to spend any more?

well if you want to be a more decent tank i'd say get the procing AA's then the defensive AA's, then the death hp AA's then focus on doing more damage, you want to take less damage, and need to stay alive that's the key for a tank.

you would only be limited as to what aa's are available at your particular level. Some class aa's and so on aren't available until 59, 61, etc. At 55 most all of your archtype aa's should be available to you as well as a few other utility aa's in general section.

The golden rule for warriors:

After purchasing Area Taunt (5 AAs for the most reliable taunt in the game)follow this.

Aggro,Avoid, Mitigate, Absorb

Aggro: You'll generate enough with discs and a moderate aggro aug (50s-60s you are likely still using the Wulfenite Aug from your home city and/or an aggro aug from LDoNs (pearl of irritation or some crap))

Avoid: (He swings, he misses, you take no damage for that swing)Combat Agility 1-3 is your first stop. If you can find gear with avoidance on it, hooray for you. Hard to find outside of newer content that can be grouped.

Mitigate: (He swings, he hits, but it doesn't do full damage) Combat stability 1-3 will be your next stop. Reduce the damage you take in the first place.

Absorb: (He swings, he hits, the damge goes through, but you can take the hit)
This is your hit points. Natural Durability 1-3 will be the next to get. It will increase your HP pool, so you can take more hits.

Finally, aggro stuff: Ambidexterity and Weapon Affinity 1-5. This is a hefty chunk of AAs to grind through, but completely worth it. It will increase your aggro and your DPS in a very good fashion.

After these are done, choose your AAs in a similar fashion: Aggro, Avoid Mitigate, Absorb. After all, a tank that can't hold aggro isn't a tank, it's a hinderance. And a tank that can't reduce damage done to himself is a sponge. A tank with no HP is a speed bump.
