Ok it seems Spell research has been nerfed since I left. For some reason I can not combine certain (WORDS) any longer that had previously been combinable. I haven't had any luck finding this hides do do the other research.
Any suggestions?

Do a search here on Alla of the specific hides you need to see what mobs drop them and where?
Or check the Bazaar.
The spell research drops are not mob specific really. They are a global drop related to the level of the item. Go specifically after caster mobs as they are the droppers though.
Yea, they changed it, now you need the hides etc, i personally feel the drop rate should be upped though.
Personally i think the new recipies make better sense, i mean, i have a wizard, how does taking 2 to 4 rocks(runes) and putting them in a spell research kit and getting a spell written on a scroll never really made much sense to me.

As far as I know, Words are no longer usable for research. Spell paper has essentially replaced them, such as Sooty Fine Runic Papyrus, and is obtained as a drop. Additional ingredients are required of course, but are mainly vendor purchased.
There's a great Quick-Reference list of suggested TS'ing paths at the EQ Traders forum, HERE. Beyond that, I havent yet found a "guide" for the new system, but there is a nice Forum thread there for Research.

If you are working research don't forget binding powders. These also drop off relevant level caster mobs and provide a much cheaper way to skill up than hides.
