Greetings all

I am returning after a 5 year absence i have a lvl 47 chanter but reading the forums i am led to believe the chanter is not really needed much these days. Is this true?? or just the ussual forum whines. I am also considering rolling a warrior as an alt. Is it still the same for a warrior as it used to be whereas you get nothing new when you level. I enjoy the thrill of a new spell every level as a caster but i am worried that i will bore of the warrior getting no new abilities very quickly???

Do you like to solo ? If yes save yourself frustration and role a solo friendly class necro, beastlord, or mage. With today's gear, most people just zerg content. Groups are hard to find unless your at end game content. With mana and haste potions, chanters are not so much in demand now. A warrior is super gear dependent. Around level 70 your going to ask yourself why did I role a warrior.

If you don't like to solo, I would look into another game.

The problem is it's hard to find a group at <60ish .. not that it doesn't happen, but it's not frequent.

If you have some cash, you can solo any class easily to 60 though.

Enc are still needed, but they're not sought after like they used to be. This may be due to the fact that there are so many places to grind that don't require them. And often when grinding, it's alot faster xp to pull multiples and let them eat up damage shields and reverse damage shields.

War don't get much until 55+ as far as disciplines. However, they do get at least 1 almost every level after that, some levels 2 or 3, so it averages out to about 1 / level. And there are lots of nifty activated AAs War get along the way.

And as I've always said about picking a class, you need to pick one that suits you, and your play style.

Some good questions to ask yourself .. do you like to up in front, in the middleo f the action or would rather have a stationary over-view of the situation? Do you like to pull? Do you like to kite? Do you prefer outdoors, or dungeons and caves? What about small areas versus vast ones? Do you love aggro, or prefer to avoid it? Do you like killing lots of enemies simultaneously or preferr one at a time?

Answering those questions will pretty much determine what class to play, or at the very least narrow it down to a few.

And questions, like which is the highest dps, or who can solo kill names the best, won't really help you figure out which class to play. Those may be important questions, once you narrow it down to 2 or 3 choices, but won't help with the overall decision.

thankyou for the advice. i do fancy something that is melee as appose to nuking or dotting from a distance so i guess warrior would be a good choice, however i dont have any plat saved up so would i struggle to solo as a warrior in sub par gear

It's rough as a War without cash, but if you can find a server with a decent buffing population, you can prob get high enough quickly to farm for some cash.

Or do as I did on Tunare, and made a Shm first and got to 25 to make my own potions. Potions in bazaar are generally marked up 2-3 times the cost or more, with some exceptions, like gate potions are almost, if not the same as the cost with failure rates.

Doing Blacksmithing while you level, and the Tradeskill quests for the cultural armor patterns and augs, will help get you descent armor and for cheap, plus another skill.

Also, if smithing is not your thing ... Doing the Crescent Reach (if you have the Serpent's Spine expansion, 20 level armor quests (and most likely if you find a good guild someone will already have some patterns and pieces banked, so you just have to do the turn ins). You can find these quests from Kimem Saydel.

You can also get various levels of Defiant gear as you level up, but it often drops off of mobs at the high end of the recommended level of the gear, but it is great gear, and even a tier lower is still great, and better than the cultured in general, and definitely bette than any group-level quested gear from TSS expansion at the same level.

If you haven't already, read the stickied thread on new / returning players, it covers alot of good information .. and for similar stuff as what I just posted, go back several pages, and look at the appropriate threads for starting out advice, gearing up, and making platinum in the current game.

It sounds like beastlord might be your thing. My 70 beastlord soloed mobs better than my 70 shadow knight 300AA, due to slow which helps a lot, more dps and my pet stunning the mobs from behind. I use to be bummed out due to my 70 SK all defensive AAs, all lifetap AAs losing to a 67 spider in stoneroot falls hitting for 668ish max. Looking back my gear wasn't strong enough.

My beastlord is now 73 550ish AA epic 1.5. I go solo in Ruined city of dranik mobs like they nothing. I'm soloing dark blues in sunderock springs, a fast hitting zone. Could a 73 SK solo this? I guess they could if they had a superstrong weapon and armor. High level plate and 2hander weapons are expensive though.

I have run into a lot of casual 70 pally, SK, warrior bummed over what they could solo, due to not being able to gear up past elaborate defiant due to low pp funds.

The new defiant gear + damage shield potions make soloing much easier than it ever was, toss in a mercenary healer and you're ready to take on stuff that used to require a group.
If you're comfortable with charming stuff, the sky is the limit, there's a chanter on Stromm that used to solo the nameds in Crystallos.
