62 Cleric looking for a......jobFollow

#1 Dec 18 2008 at 5:51 AM Rating: Decent
Ahh...My Cleric is out of a job. I keep hering over and over that people would rather group with a PC then a NCP. Well prove it. My Cleric was 60 the same time my SK was 12. Now my SK is 63 and my Cleric......62. Why? Because I could never find a group. Time and time again I would go in to zones sending tells to poeple asking could I join. The answer? Sorry we got a Merc. So now my main is a useless buff bot that sits in POK buffing. However the mercs are not the big issue. The biggest problem in EQ is no one groups. Which I thought was kind of the point of the game. But what do I know. So now we have boxers, and mercs. That leaves the people that want to group stuck out in the cold.

There is a thing called guild. Maybe you should join one, depending on what you want to achieve. Raid? Family style?

I agree that grouping is hard these days, though...

'Cause you play your SK more than your cleric? Smiley: grin

Out of curiosity, did your SK group from 12-63?

I won't argue with your experiences although I think that last point is important.

There's two problems at the moment. The first and big one, is a new expansion, so most people are playing their main toons and trying to level / progress through SoD. This problem will pass in a few more months.

The other, and way more persistent problem, is that the game is pretty easy to solo upto the 60s (I'd even say to the mid 70s or higher). Soloing of course bites for some people, and particularly for certain classes, but all can do it, and not too ineffectively. Therein lies the problem. However, I don't really want the lower level game to go back to the way it used to be, primarily because there are so few people playing, and low level alts, would become PL'd again instead of soloers + optional merc bots. Although I wouldn't mind if leveling at lower levels was more difficult than it currently is, just don't want to go back to pre-PoP difficulty.

I don't have any clerics as mains, but have plenty of cleric friends, and eventhough they rarely, if ever have /lfg on, I will still ask them to join a group when we need a healer. I only use my healer mercs for backup, so I don't have to pay as much attention to pulling, and be a bit more risky, or to avoid down time, when soloing / farming. It's what I would be doing even if mercs weren't around.

And I'll definitely give ya, at 62, you'll be hard pressed to find a group as a cleric .. heck it's hard to find a group as any class, but a low dps class like cleric is even less sought after. Tanks seem to be lost as well. I was in BoT for over 6hrs on my Rog, being MT. It was annoying, but no tanks or healers to be found, so I used my healer merc, and I doubt a Tank merc would of be able to keep aggro for long with how much End they burn up trying to. But I would of been very happy with a real person tank in the group, and a real person healer instead of the merc, as a real person could of did some nuking, and reverse DS, and stuns (for Clr), or added dots and DS (for Dru), or dots and procs and pet dmg (for Shm).

So, I've gotten side-tracked again .. The point was, part of the problem is only temporary, and the other is a system problem, that even if they went the other direction, wouldn't really help out. It's unfortunate, but with the limited number of people and age of the game, it's to be expected, and just makes us old-timers reminiscent of the 'good old' ? days.

Yther, as usual the voice of reason.

If people are denying you a grouping opportunity because they already have a merc, they're just stupid. There is no low end game, period. Like bbot suggested, join a guild. Maybe experiment with a tank merc. But most importantly, if you want to be a cleric, level up. That will solve almost all of your complaints.

I have never, ever turned down a cleric to replace a merc. I don't know a single post 75 player that ever has. I appreciate your frustration and sure it must be taxing, but there are welcomed opportunities for clerics. Particularly if you have any desire to raid, clerics are the lifeblood of a raid. There are no mercs in raiding.

Keep the faith.

Another problem is so many people in todays EQ are not very friendly. So funny when you zone into a zone with 2 3 people in zone. You say hello etc in ooc. So many people are like how dare you speak to me mentality. I remember in younger EQ people were a lot friendlier.

I guess a lot of people dont want another eating there xp and loots. The sense of adventure has given way to level and gain leet gear.

Xegonys casual population must be very low. I rarely see many toons 50 to 70 lfg. O and I love how you throw a buff on toons now days and don't even get a thank you.

From your post, I am pretty sure you mainly play on Xegony. When you see 23 in a zone most likely it is boxers. I dont want to turn into a grouper versus raider discussion, but yea when I go to a zone - currently spend most of my offtime in Valde, I usually just bring a box along with me or use a merc to heal because my gear allows me to. Sure people come in and /ooc lfg and dont get invites from me. The reason is that I like to afk alot sometimes. When I invite someone, I feel as though if I am not constantly killing or pulling mobs then I am slacking. Also, sometimes I feel that if they are not pulling their own weight in the group then why should I push myself so hard.

The buffing statement you said really isnt that different that it used to be. Sure you may have gotten more thank yous in the past, but now there is less of a population. When I run through a zone, I will stop and buff a group if I happen to run past them.

Time to bite the bullet and have another server merge. Maybe even a 3:1 merge this time.

Hmm it does look like 23, I meant 2 or 3.

The biggest problem with LFG in todays game is greed. With todays gear, mercs etc people don't need the player LFG. Adding the extra lfg player cuts back on their xp per hour and a chance they might lose a role on some item they want.

I would say number 2 is bad experience with pickup groups in the past. Most of us have grouped with people clueless on how to play their class, loot in middle of a fight, go afk for 15 minutes without a headsup etc. My favorite is going to guide a toon to a zone spending 15minutes travel time to have them say I got to log grrr. Most raiders stick to guildies during off times, plus most are bored with the pace of the casual game.

Three as stated, wanting to play at their own pace. If player is happy with their kill rate in current zone, adding another player might make them move to a higher zone or expansion. Adding a 55 druid alt lfg, and getting xp sucks lets go hit dsh! But I'm content here in nobles etc! Or the player that plays and goes afk for whatever reason 20 minutes at a time constantly.

People who don't suspend their Merc for a real player are not stupid at all.

A well played character outshines a Merc BY FAR. No question. Both tank Mercs and Cleric Mercs are dumb. We have all experienced it.

But.

The reality is, a very large portion of current Everquest players don't perform as well as Mercs.

The people who would rather keep their Merc over a real player have experienced this so they respectfully decline offers to join. It's not personal.

Another thing people don't consider is AFK. Not only do Mercs never go AFK, they don't mind if you go AFK at the most awkward times. In this sense, Mercs are perfect partners for really casual players who have 3 year old kids and parents and wives in the house while they play.

My point is, people who prefer Mercs over real players are not universally mean and/or stupid.
