Why does no one like to be bards? i just made one and he's great (10). i kill faster and easier then my shadow knight (29).

I also was wondering if it is true that EVERY instument helps do things b/c when i was looking at them it didnt say it did anything.

Question #2- What is the song/instument for running faster then some horses? Level required=...?

I've personally never met anyone who didn't like grouping with bards but a lot of people don't to play a bard because it's not as simple as most classes for everyone. As for the songs, each song will say an instrument type in it's description. If you are playing that song while the complimenting instrument type is equipped by either an instrument itself of an instrument mod in a piece of gear then that song will be more "potent." For instance my bard's damage over time song does double the description damage when he has his drum equipped because it is a percussion song and he is holding a percussion instrument. The song you are talking about for speed is Selo's Accelerating Chorus i believe and it is a level 49 spell and you will want a drum or other percussion mod equipped while you play it to fly. The levitate/invis/see invis/run speed version of that song is Selo's Song of Travel which will also need a percussion mod to go fast and that is a level 51 song.

Just to add, there's a few song effect that instrument modifiers do not affect. These include slows and hastes for the most part, as well as a few rare others I don't recall atm.

Otherwise, your highest instrument number is what you use, and th eincrease in potency is the instrument mod / 10, so a mod of 20, is 2.0 time mroe potent on those songs than without any mod. Also, you need instrument mods to skill up.

Hopefully this helps a bit.

You should hit the run speed cap around lvl 40-45 with decent drums (2.x or better mod). There's also an AA ability (Fleet of Foot) which raises your speed cap.

I played a bard to lvl 66. Started my bard in Velious and went through to about GoD/OoW. Then I quit for a while and, upon returning, just wasn't that into it any longer. Soloing has been reduced to DoT kiting and the songs are just copies of themselves over and over with slightly higher mods or caps. Compared to the earlier 65 levels and the wide variety of neat tricks and song effects and whatnot, it just lost its luster.

Plus, SOE has seemed to have a sh*tty attitude towards bards in general as if they didn't really fit into the modern game and the staff is resentful that they have to deal with them. I still remember Brenlo's nasty-*** attitude towards the players during the big AE Kiting nerf. These days my bard is mainly a tracking bot when I want to park a character in a zone and keep an eye out for nameds.

I love having bards in group.
They're great pullers and can really boost a groups' damage output, resists etc.
The ability to drop aggro is priceless but it can be a difficult class to play, I know it is for me =/

Well, I wouldn't say no one likes to play Bards, IMO they are the best all-around utility class, the jack-of-all-trades if you will, but they are also the hardest class to play well, by far. I've arrived at the opinion that there are 2 types of bards, they are either very good or very bad. Much like a musician, being a good bard is all in the timing. If you're doing it right, it's a dance, and you are really doing about 3-4x as many things as the average player during the same amount of time. Not everyone can handle that fast-paced style, it also takes a lot of practice. Anyone who's grouped with me (sorry, guild-only) can tell you they love having a bard in their group, but even I didn't consider myself good at it until about level 50. Really, 52... that's when you can get Fading Memories AA, which changes everything.

Actually, the song you are looking for is Selo's Accelerando, at level 5... this is the Bard's first speed song, which you have to keep playing constantly to use its speed effect. The 49 song Selo's Accelerating Chorus is quite a bit better, in that it lasts 2.5 minutes from a single note of the song, as well as being a bit faster. Once you get this song, you'll use it the rest of your career. There is also an AA that does this same ability, and that's very handy to have because it is an instant click, letting you refresh speed while twisting other songs. The 51 song Selo's Song of Travel, as Eondyil mentioned, is Lev/Invis/Speed, but personally I never use that song (Fading Memories AA is my no-drop invis). It's fine when you are alone, but dangerous when used with a group. What often happens if a bard plays this in a group, then someone tries to cast invisibility on themselves or others, your song overwrites/blocks their invisibility spell, and they think they are safe. In reality, they are only safe so long as they stay within your song range, as soon as they get too far away from you, their invis drops and they get killed.

bards require a lot of attention to play properly. when i play my bard, i'm watching my songs, watching Selo's on my buff bar and keeping it from wearing off, watching the health bar of the mob our group is fighting to know when to run and get another. i'm watching if my slow song has worn off, checking if my aura is up, checking my 1.5 cooldown, and most of all, checking Tracking for nameds i can pull.
and pulling is just so much fun as a bard. we run real fast and have so many ways of splitting a mob from his friends that once i get bored with mez splitting, i can use snare splitting for a chance of pace. for me, pulling has almost become an act if grace, one that is pleasing to my eyes and my hands from moving in a semi-circle and fading off aggro at just the right moment and then picking the target up again.
then i switch to my cleric alt and, wow, the difference in play style: sit on horse, complete heal. complete heal. complete heal.well. that's not entirely true, most of the time i'm meleeing with the hammer... but i miss playing songs, on my cleric.
