No.

Everquest is nothing like World of Warcraft except that it is a persistent world and you primarily kill things to gain xp, level up and acquire gear.

If you are looking for an alternative to WoW, Everquest is not it. If you are looking for a different MMO give it a try for free.

Combat pace in EQ runs slower than in WoW. EQ has become a ton more casual, solo friendly. If you want to look at EQ, I would role one of these 3 classes based on your playstyle.
Necromancer lord of the undead and soloing ability on non summoning mobs (summoning mobs=mostly named that summon you to beat on you if your not in there face atm). Necros are not very gear dependent, but plenty gear out there. A necro loads up a mob with dmg over time spells, sends in undead pet to attack. Necro then runs around making mob follow necro. Necro has a spell line that slows down mobs movement. This is called kiting.
Magician have strong direct damage spells, the strongest pet in game. Mage sends in pet to attack, then the mage blows the mobs planet up! A mage isn't very gear dependent either until later in game.
Beastlord is the get in the mobs face class of pet classes. Beasty gets a slow spell line to slow mobs attack rate. They get a haste buff line to increase there attack speed. They get the best pet heal line. Beastlord is more gear dependent than the mage or necro which are pure casters.

So do you want to run the mob around like a chicken with head cut off, blow the mobs planet up, or get in its face and battle it down ?
