While digging through some things (looking for an elusive Christmas music CD), I came across my copy of Diablo. I haven't played it in years, as the last computer I owned did not like it for some reason. The current machine had no such qualms, and I was able to load up and play. It got me thinking about the time before EQ and the games I played. What fantasy/sci-fi games did you play in the past? My list includes...

1. Zork--at the company my aunt used to work for.
2. Wizardry
3. Might and Magic
4. Warcraft.
5. Diablo
6. Dungeon Master
7. Starcraft
8. Dungeon Siege
And others I'm sure I'm missing.

I played the bulk of the Infocom text adventures. Some more successfully than others.
The earlier SSI "Gold Box" AD&D games: Pool of Radiance, Curse of the Azure Bonds, Secrets of the Silver Blades, the couple Krynn ones, etc. I also had some PC game made by SSI where you could design your own "Gold Box" adventures. I never did finish mine.
Bards Tale and Might & Magic.

Those were all Commodore era things (except for the PC creator program). I never did the Diablo/Dungeon Siege/Warcraft thing on the PC. Most of my gaming time was spend on Civ2.

I did, however, play this bad-*** 1st person adventure (YouTube) back in the early 80's.

Ahh, yes Bard's Tale, that was a fun one.

I played some of the SSI games as well, Joph. The second one, the name of which escapes me at the moment, was my favorite (the one after Pool of Radiance). Um, which if I'd read carefully I would have seen the title of in your post. Man I need some coffee or something.

That first person game looks a lot like Wizardry, with the hallway setup. Although I played that one on a Mac in black and white.

Curse of the Azure Bonds was after PoR. That one was my favorite as well (assuming we're discussing the same game).

PoR wasn't bad but the later games added features that greatly improved gameplay. Namely the "Rest" command rather than having to manually memorize and cast "Cure Light Wounds" 200 times to heal your party.

Zork ftw! Those Infocom text games were the best thing going back then. Since my first PC didn't have ANY graphics capability, that was all there was.

Like Wizardry, too (inexplicably).

Back in the old days, Amiga 500/1200 was THE machine for games; played:

Space Quest series
King's Quest series
Simon the Sorcerer series
The Dark Eye series
Baldur's Gate 1
Eye of the Beholder 1
Lure of the Temptress
Starcraft
Dark Reign
Diablo 1

just to mention some of them. Boy, once I had spare time...

I loved all the Sierra and LucasGames/LucasArts adventures, especially Indiana Jones 3 and Monkey Island 1+2...

Elite (yeah, that's how old I am); still the best game ever.
#11 Dec 02 2008 at 1:01 AM Rating: Excellent
I didn't really play all that many. Eye of the Beholder 1, 2 and 3 (but that third one wasn't all that good, first two were quite fun) and some Ultima games.

I most likely played some more on the old commodore and the Amiga, but can't really recall all that many games from them.

Never cared for any type of RTS, I was rather disappointed to see what they did to Dune2, I really liked the first Dune.

I played alot of console games. I plopped down 2k on a PC in 1991 and it was basically worthless. 2 megs ram (windows ate most that up) and a 50 meg hard drive didnt give much power for games. Worked great for business applications though, which is why I bought it.

My first video game was Pong.

My first "real" game was Pitfall on the Atari 2600 in the early 80's.

My first gaming obsession was Ultima 4 in '85.

The year I bought a PC and never looked back for a gaming platform was 1989 and Sentinel Worlds I: Future Magic.

I played Super Mario Brothers at my friend's house when I was 14. Fast forward 20 years and I started playing EQ. A year later, it's still the only game I care about and the only MMO I can imagine I'll ever play.

Master of Orion II
Bloodwych

Dungeon Master
Empire

There was a game called Dungeon Master, as I recall - it was a 3-D style game that predated the Eye of the Beholder games. I remember it was kind of clunky, but it really got my imagination going, and planted the seeds for the RPG's I played later.

There was an even older game I had on the Commodore 64 that was a 2-D dungeon adventure; you got sucked into a pool or something into the dungeon and as you hunted things, you collected better armor and weapons. I would probably remember the name if I heard it.

Then there was Zork and all the Infocom greats. I played those text adventures for hours on end. Pool of Radience and the sequels were the first role playing games that I played again and again, testing different paths to victory.

As someone mentioned, Elite was a fantastic game. Such a big world and so much freedom. Civilization kept me up many nights, too. Funny how there are "equivalents" to many of these games nowdays, newer Civilization versions, games like Freelancer, Neverwinter Nights, etc., but we still think most highly of those early games and the fun we had with them.

Pool of Radiance was cool, but had clunky controls.

Wizardry IV
Eamon (Apple text only game --you could make your own adventures too)

Legend of Zelda.
My friend and I used to have competitions who could beat it faster and I won with a time of around 23 minutes.
Zelda II was amazing but I never did beat it :(
--I could never get to the last castle past all the invisible eyes, and I could
never find the cross that would let me see them.

Avatar, on NovaNet. My friend and I used to "break into" his mother's classroom at night and play it. What "criminal nerds" we were!

Diablo 1 and 2 (despite the hackers)

Dragon Warrior 1 and 2 (2 was far better)

Final Fantasy in most of its renditions were great.
I never did beat Final Fantasy III or VII... someday I'll go back
and get revenge.

Shadowgate (on NES) was another great adventure game with
lots of twists and turns and confusing puzzles.

Fallout 1 and 2 kicked radioactive butt!
I still haven't got a copy of Fallout 3 but I am looking forward
to it too.

Thats all I can think of for now

I'd put the Infocom text adventures and Wizardry I as my all time favorites. I also really enjoyed Below the Root and the Swiss Family Robinson from the Windham Classics series of games. There was another little-known game called Dragon's Eye that wasn't all that great but I have fond memories of playing it. I tinkered with Might and Magic II.

As far as consoles, I LOVED the D&D titles for the Intellivision (Cloudy Mountain and Treasure of Tarmin) and of course when the NES came out I played Zelda I & II like a fiend, and later Dragon Warrior, Crystalis, Castelvania, Kid Icarus, Wizards and Warriors, and Shadowgate which was one of my favorites. The gameboy also had some good RPG titles like the Final Fantasy series and the Zelda titles.

More recently, I've gotten a lot of mileage out of the Icewind Dale series.
