Hello! I am thinking about returning to Everquest. The last time i played an Everquest account was maybe 7 or so years ago on my Iksar, "Corazz". For the past 7 years i have been occupying my time playing the mmo Final Fantasy XI online under the character name "Murasami". It was a great adventure and lots of fun, but I believe 7 years is long enough, and I am ready to start a new adventure again. I have read the information in the sticky about coming back to EQ, but I just have a few questions first that maybe the community can answer for me.

How long does it take to change zones/areas? I know in Everquest II i was greatly disappointed because i would spend over 3 minutes changing areas.

What are the PVP servers, if there are still any?

How is the community? Are the players still feuding over races and such?

Is it worth coming back? Do lots of people still play? Is it anyting like i remember it was, or has the game been completely revamped in the last 7 years? If so is it better or worse?

Also I was wondering if anyone could give me server suggestions?

Sorry for asking so many questions, but I hope that you guys can find the time to answer them. Thanks for the info!

Eh, I don't really play anymore, but I can probably help answer some of your questions:

1) How long it takes to zone depends on your system entirely. If you're taking a long time to load in a zone, you need a better computer. I haven't had any issues playing up until SoF, with zones being that long. However, when I started playing EQ back in late 2001/early 2002, I took quite a while to load in my zones.

2) The only PvP server that is left, to my knowledge, is Zek. I don't remember the entire ruleset, but I think it's based on race or deity. There's a +/- 5 level ability to attack, and that's it. (might be 6, I don't remember)

3) Race doesn't really matter. If you mean an IC sense, there isn't much roleplaying. Pick what you want to play -- the stats balance out in the end.

4) It's worth coming back if you want to play it? This is a really tough question to answer, because it depends solely on the player. For the most part, it's been revamped since last you played. But it's still a fun game. It's not better or worse (though some would argue) than it was 7 years ago -- it's just different.

5) Try Maelin Starpyre or The Rathe. Those are two servers I played on, and had quite a blast on. I'm not sure what the recommended servers are at the moment, however.

What Paradox said, it's mainly about you system, I have a fairly new dell and it takes around 20 secs, maybe less.

I think Zek is the only PvP Server left, they merged servers n such. I haven't played PVP on EQ in forever, so I can't help you much, however, I've heard it's lacking in many areas.

IMO, there still is community, though it really starts at 70+, unless you already have connections. I've met a few good friends since I started playing again, about a month, and he's introduced me to his guild. About races, do you mean do players still say "Ogres are ugly & and dwarf females have beards" In a sense they do =P just playin, barely anyone RPs anymore, maybe on FV server? But no.. they took away ALL exp penalties, and with PoK and Crescent Reach, race doesn't matter.

That's personal, imo. I tried Final Fantasy, and it was fun, but the delay was horrible. WoW... no thanks, got about 3hrs into it. I hate the way EQ has changed... I believe that EQ had a lot of potential and SoE just .. well destroyed it? To me... they've made it extremely easy, Druids/Shamans now get a 90% rez, you don't spawn naked when you die, no more coin weight, exp penalties vanished, race? what's that... just a different graphic. IMO PoK & Bazaar are the main things that brought the game down. There are many little changes that, to me, seperated EQ from all other MMOs.
- Oh and for the people still play, you won't find many players til you hit about 65+, everyone usually 10 boxes and PLs their alts to 70 in a couple days anyway.. so prepare to solo =P

Server suggestions - RP - FV, PvP - Zek, European, Antonius Bayle (sp?), Luclin has a lot of vets on there... I play on Bertox, send Shamantics a tell sometime if you decide on that server =P so far, I've met a LOT of friendly people.

Anywho... I find EQ the best MMO out there, even with how easy SoE made it. They had to though, to keep up with the fast paced, easy games like WoW, AoC, and Warhammer. Everything just feels "right" lol. So I hope ya stick with it : )

The coin weight is due to the next expansion, but the other two things are not true as far as I know? Does that happen with the next expansion too?

The latest patch introduced some new things regarding death. When you die, you respawn at your bind point with all of your items, money, and all of your spells are still memorized. You have some debuff similar to rez effects but doesn't last as long. You also lose exp just like always, so getting a rez is still a good idea. As far as exp penalties go, the racial exp penalties have been gone for a long time.

Huh, if you still have to get the corpse to get a rez (which I assume), why bother with giving someone who died all their items? Most of the times they'll summon to the GL anyway. (I know I do, I tend to die in all the wrong places)

At least there's still the xp loss with every death.

But it is indeed a long way from fearing death as they lead to corpse runs (some more dreaded than others) to now just an xp nuisance.

Not a good thing.

Thanks for the info!

Betting change was made due to death experiences in other games such as lotr and wow. patch notes said it was at the request of the community at fan faires.
This can be a good thing during a raid, you get rezzed and dont have to sit down to mem spells or take a few seconds to loot corpse and grab low hp aggro.

Patch also allows shaman and druid a 90 percent out of combat rezz.

The racial exp penalties are supposed to be gone but the class exp penalties are still here.

I just created a new 3-box team of all Iksar, war/nec/shm. I have had no deaths and leveled them all up together with all getting the same exp for every quest and every turn in and every kill.

Only the first ding to lvl 3 was all three simultaneous. After that, level 4-7 or so was necro and shaman together then warrior a few kills later. After lvl 8 until now at 17, the Necro always dings first. As soon as the necro dings I check the warrior exp bar and he is at about three yellows now, and steadily getting more behind.

The shaman always dings after the necro but it seems to be just only 2-3 kills every level. Dont know why is that.

So apparently there is a class exp penalty against warriors in place. I remember when warriors got a class bonus and halflings got a racial bonus and together that person could level fast.

-edit-
OH, I forgot, there was even a time when I was hunting Kittens in Crescent Reach, where the necro got zero exp due to grey kitten but the warrior got exp due to blue kittens. So that is even more exp difference.
