Hey Cylon Warrior, there is a huge variety of stuff you can give to you pet - it will really make a difference in its toughness and ability to dish out damage.
But one class of pet items stands above the rest; these are often referred to as "pet toys" in EQ parlance, and will often have (very) powerful abilities that your pet can make use of. Better yet, many of these items can be equipped by any level pet, and since most cannot be used by players, keeps the cost way down.
There is just one caveat; they are summoned items, created by high level mages. *However* ...there is a handy trick to get around this. Summoned items and pets disappear from the game 20 minutes or so after you log out. BUT, if you go to one of the NPC's in the Plane of Knowledge that says "shrouds" or "character shrouds" beneath its name, you can get him to turn you into another creature. At this point, your character changes into that creature, and your pet poofs...and you log out for the night. When you go to log in the next day, hail that shroud guy and say "remove" At this point, your old form, your PET, and that pet's SUMMONED items will still be there - no more paying for pet toys, no more going through pet summoning reagents (until you upgrade your pet to a higher level).
For lower level toons, this is a godsend - Korgulon, my 53 shadowknight, with his (I think) level 35 skelly pet, can have his pet solo hill giants...let that sink in for a second. Shadowknight pets are supposed to be some of the weakest around.
My lvl 34 necro character has his pet solo frost giants in Great Divide. Once you discover the potential of these things, you won't look back.
The best way to get your hands on these is to check the bazaar - sometimes you can get a mage to summon them for you right on the spot. I made a list of some of the best ones. I keep this list on an index card for each pet, and check off which items he has, so that there's no duplication or missing items. Here's the list:
1. Phantom Plate / Prime Plate (several pieces total - leggings, helmet, vambrace, boots, breastplate - and try to get these first if you can)
2. Fist of Ixiblat (if your pet is dual-wielding, get TWO, otherwise, get a shield)
3. Aenda's satin choker
4. Nastel's Linked Bracelet / Jade Bracelet (you'll need two total bracelets)
5. Nastel's Gold Ring x 2
6. Nastel's Ridged Earhoop x 2
7. Lucid Belt
8. Muzzle of Mowcha
9. Woven Shawl
And that's it! Have fun watching your pet, who now more than likely has many more hit points than you at this point (with this gear) tear up mobs with ease. You might also wish to do an item search on the site to get an idea of what kind of stats these items will give your pet.
Take care and have fun.
